Council Election Party

May 31, 2010 12:37

It was always a good day when the democratic process had been carried out without a hitch, and this day was no exception. The results of the latest Island Council election were in, and it was time to celebrate, not only the results, but the process itself. And given the number of hardships they endured on the island, a celebration was something ( Read more... )

As she did not expect to be in attendance at the party for a terribly long amount of time, Jane kept Lydia with her. They were both in proper sundresses that covered a moderate and demure amount of skin and Lydia was tired enough from playing in the ocean earlier that she permitted herself to be carried, resting her cheek lethargically against Jane's shoulder. Though not small anymore, Jane could quite easily manage her daughter's weight. "What do you think, Liddy? A drink?"

"Yes," Lydia agreed, words sticking together tiredly. "Stay up, Mama?"

"Of course you can for a treat today," Jane soothed as she adjusted her and continued along to the foods table.

"Hello, Jane," Nicki said, smiling at the other woman a bit stiffly from the other side of the refreshment table. Nicki, herself, was in a slightly less demure sundress, her hair falling around her face in a way she still wasn't accustomed to.

She wasn't drinking, the cup in her hand filled with fruit juice, and she felt as awkward at this party as she had at any of the others. But she was trying. That had to count for something.

Jane adjusted her grip on Lydia in order to turn and greet the woman without her daughter knocking over several items upon the table. "Nicki," she greeted warmly, a smile of absolute sincerity upon her face. "You look lovely! Don't you agree, Lydia?" she coaxed of her daughter, who gave a firm nod in acquiescence.

"Thank you," she said, smoothing a hand primly over her skirt, her smile taking on a demure tilt. Giving the little girl a tiny wave, she added, "Someone looks tired."

Sally hadn't smoked in years. Years and years and more years because it made her skin look horrid. And yet, she was carrying a pack of cigarettes on her because Margot had left them and had taken herself away and off, back to a land where everyone was probably sane. Sally didn't exactly look kindly on such abandonment and was not precisely there for the celebration of the new Council insomuch as she was there in order to take advantage of the large amount of drinks.

"No," she said of the wine. "No," she added at the sake, wrinkling her nose at anything with a too-low alcohol content. "I'm sure someone around here could get me some sort of paralyzer shot. I'm sure that exists."

"I'm not quite sure if it's different where your from," Alistair said, conversationally, as he watched Sally talk to what appeared to be alcohol. "But being paralyzed is usually a bad thing, isn't it?"

"It's also usually a shot of alcohol where I come from," she replied, considering she didn't want to suddenly be struck in the back of the spine with a particularly sharp object. It wouldn't really do well for her, in the end. "It's just got a very apt name."

"I think the appeal is still being lost to me, then," he said, sounding just a little amused still. He didn't doubt there were drinks that strong where he was from, and Oghren likely had a few dozen of them at once. "I would say dwarven alcohol would do the same thing if it were here, but I wouldn't wish any of that on anyone."

Henry had only been the council rep for the psych department for a short time, since Chase Meridian disappeared, but it had been interesting so far. It had given him more of an insight to the way things on the island were run, how things were organized, and Henry was pretty impressed by how smoothly things seemed to go for the most part, relatively speaking. With no organized government, things could have just as easily descended into chaos. Henry didn't really relish the thought of his glasses being smashed and a rock being pushed onto him a la Piggy.

Tonight was for celebrating, congratulating the newly elected, and Henry was happy to do so. Once he had a drink from the bar at the Hub, though, he couldn't help making a silent toast to Pete, the Beav, Jonesy, and Duddits. SSDD, boys. SSDD. A smile curved at one corner of his lips, and he knocked the drink back.

It always feels strange, addressing him outside of the Psych Office, without the structure of their scheduled appointments, but it feels equally strange, passing him in a crowd and pretending she doesn't know him.

Smiling faintly, one hand resting on the prominent swell of her belly, she says, "Hello, Dr. Devlin. Lovely night, isn't it?"

"Hi, Sarah," Henry replied with a friendly smile. "It is, and a great night for a party. How are you feeling? Can I get you anything?"

"I'm fine, Henry," she says with a warm laugh, "Big as a house, but feeling fine tonight. How are you?"

In her time, Daisy's seen more governments rise and fall than most people stock in friends. The Island's turnover rate is just adding more logs to that pretty little pile storing up in her mental banks and like always, she wants to be there. Some part of her wants to stand here as history happens so that she'll remember it and be able to say 'and I saw that too'.

Not that anything too exciting ever happens. It's more of the same, really, and Daisy likes keeping tabs on things, but doesn't expect to be too shocked by anything. Not tonight.

"Hey there, beautiful." Though the moves called for Johnny showing up with an extra glass of whatever alcoholic drink was available for Daisy, he was bare handed as he came up beside her, sliding an arm around her waist.

"And hello to you, handsome," Daisy replies right back, leaning into his arm because of all the things she knows in the universe, she knows to drink the good wine, enjoy the good times, and never deny a handsome man a good grope. "And don't you look fancy for tonight."

"I figure being part of Pete's campaign means getting an excuse to dress up for the night." For a given definition of campaign, which mostly meant Mary Jane, Felicia and Johnny talking people into voting for him.

Time was, party like this Robin put on a pretty dress and had a really awkward fight with at least one guy. She wasn't sure if she was exactly relieved that all those guys were gone because as much as there were fights, there were also good times and she wanted those so desperately right now it hurt. She still went the great dress route and decked herself out in a strappy red thing with a pair of matching heels.

Whether or not it was going to lead to a verbal sparring match was up to the night, now.

To be honest Grigg hadn't put much thought into his clothes. He never really did and while he had worked to make his hair a little less unkempt it wasn't anything to brag about.

Turning around to say something to someone who had been there moments before he nearly ran into a woman who was clearly ready for something. It was only quick thinking that kept him from accidentally knocking her down and ruining the evening.

"Oh wow, I'm sorry," he apologised useless and holding up his cup. "Not paying attention and it could've ruined your dress."

Robin shrugged idly and dismissed the concern with a wave of her hand. "If you did, I'd just change," she promised with an easy smile on her face, curling her drink against her stomach as she watched him. "I mean, I'm pretty sure that the sign of a good party is when a dress or two get ruined, right?"

"Oh definitely. Or it's the sign of a wild and crazy night," Grigg said waving his arms slightly to get into the true SNL spirit of wild and crazy. The effect was almost certainly lost in translation but it was worth a shot.

A moment later he stopped. "That probably came out wrong."
