Council Election Party

It was always a good day when the democratic process had been carried out without a hitch, and this day was no exception. The results of the latest Island Council election were in, and it was time to celebrate, not only the results, but the process itself. And given the number of hardships they endured on the island, a celebration was something ( Read more... )

As she did not expect to be in attendance at the party for a terribly long amount of time, Jane kept Lydia with her. They were both in proper sundresses that covered a moderate and demure amount of skin and Lydia was tired enough from playing in the ocean earlier that she permitted herself to be carried, resting her cheek lethargically against Jane's shoulder. Though not small anymore, Jane could quite easily manage her daughter's weight. "What do you think, Liddy? A drink?"

"Yes," Lydia agreed, words sticking together tiredly. "Stay up, Mama?"

"Of course you can for a treat today," Jane soothed as she adjusted her and continued along to the foods table.

"Hello, Jane," Nicki said, smiling at the other woman a bit stiffly from the other side of the refreshment table. Nicki, herself, was in a slightly less demure sundress, her hair falling around her face in a way she still wasn't accustomed to.

She wasn't drinking, the cup in her hand filled with fruit juice, and she felt as awkward at this party as she had at any of the others. But she was trying. That had to count for something.

Jane adjusted her grip on Lydia in order to turn and greet the woman without her daughter knocking over several items upon the table. "Nicki," she greeted warmly, a smile of absolute sincerity upon her face. "You look lovely! Don't you agree, Lydia?" she coaxed of her daughter, who gave a firm nod in acquiescence.

"Thank you," she said, smoothing a hand primly over her skirt, her smile taking on a demure tilt. Giving the little girl a tiny wave, she added, "Someone looks tired."

"She's had quite the long day," Jane concurred, bouncing her mildly and adjusting her in her arms. "I do believe she is not yet accustomed to the motions at a party, but does not wish to leave." She kept her attentions upon Nicki. "Are you enjoying yourself this evening?"

"I suppose so," she said, then, pitching her voice a little lower, she added, "I always feel a bit out of place at these parties. It just seems silly not to go to them."

"You do?" Jane asked with sudden concern, setting Lydia down upon the ground when she began to fuss and Jane became more concerned with the conversation than pleasing each of her whims. "Is there any reason specifically?" she asked worriedly.

"I'm sure there are a lot of reasons, Jane," Nicki answered, "It's been difficult, knowing where I'm supposed to fit in here. It was difficult in Sandy, but at least there, I had my family around me."

"It is possible to find people to call your family here, as well," she said delicately, not wishing to impress too heavily upon Nicki, given that she knew that her ideals were her own and not everyone's. "Not romantically, I do mean, but in a way that you would feel for a parent or sibling."
