Council Election Party

May 31, 2010 12:37

It was always a good day when the democratic process had been carried out without a hitch, and this day was no exception. The results of the latest Island Council election were in, and it was time to celebrate, not only the results, but the process itself. And given the number of hardships they endured on the island, a celebration was something ( Read more... )

Time was, party like this Robin put on a pretty dress and had a really awkward fight with at least one guy. She wasn't sure if she was exactly relieved that all those guys were gone because as much as there were fights, there were also good times and she wanted those so desperately right now it hurt. She still went the great dress route and decked herself out in a strappy red thing with a pair of matching heels.

Whether or not it was going to lead to a verbal sparring match was up to the night, now.

To be honest Grigg hadn't put much thought into his clothes. He never really did and while he had worked to make his hair a little less unkempt it wasn't anything to brag about.

Turning around to say something to someone who had been there moments before he nearly ran into a woman who was clearly ready for something. It was only quick thinking that kept him from accidentally knocking her down and ruining the evening.

"Oh wow, I'm sorry," he apologised useless and holding up his cup. "Not paying attention and it could've ruined your dress."

Robin shrugged idly and dismissed the concern with a wave of her hand. "If you did, I'd just change," she promised with an easy smile on her face, curling her drink against her stomach as she watched him. "I mean, I'm pretty sure that the sign of a good party is when a dress or two get ruined, right?"

"Oh definitely. Or it's the sign of a wild and crazy night," Grigg said waving his arms slightly to get into the true SNL spirit of wild and crazy. The effect was almost certainly lost in translation but it was worth a shot.

A moment later he stopped. "That probably came out wrong."

She grinned at him, but there might have been some judging going on there, she wasn't about to fully lie. "Well, it didn't come out exactly golden, but I think it was still fine," she assured him easily. "So, when you're not spilling drinks at a party, what are you usually doing?"

"Trying to look like I belong here. Which I theoretically do given that it is a party for the island, but theory goes out the window with my dance skills."

Which would hopefully be much improved by the time his dance class was over. For now he was going to carefully avoid the dance floor unless he was too drunk to care much about that.

Robin gave a hiss of sympathy. "This is all a prelude to you telling me about your attempts at the robot, isn't it," she said with a good and fair bit of suspicion in her tone. "That, or something about how even though people tell you otherwise, you can really dance to soul music."

"I have, for the record, never actually tried to do the robots. I know my limits," he said with a laugh.

Which were very clearly marked at break dancing. The eighties had been hard enough to get through with the loud music and adolescent awkwardness. Grigg had never been one to go willingly into humiliation. It always seemed to find him.

"And suddenly you become not That Guy!" she said chipperly, gesturing towards him with enthusiasm. "I mean, sure, when you're drunk, you always think that your best friend can totally pull off the robot, but sobriety always tells the truth, doesn't it?"

Holding his hands out and shrugging slightly he smiled and nodded.

"It definitely does. It proves that all those things you thought were awesome are actually not that awesome. Just embarrassing." Especially when documented. The internet had made the circulation of such evidence even easier.

"All things thought awesome while drunk are pretty lame by sober standards. I mean, isn't that part of the rules of the universe?" she wondered, sharing a secretive grin when she let the thoughtful and slightly-confused face fall away. "I mean, that's how I was raised."

"I think it might be and if it isn't, they should make an amendment to those rules so that it is. It would make a lot of people very happy."

Namely almost all of the guys he had gone to college with. A few of the girls too and probably himself. There was a long list out there of every stupid thing he'd said or done while drunk that felt like a good idea at the time but felt terrible the next day.

Robin grinned, feeling pretty at ease and she let out a long sigh. "Dude, honestly," she announced. "You have no idea how nice it is to talk to an earthling who isn't from the crazy past or future and isn't totally messed up in the head. It's like you're the refreshing burst of normality I've been needing for...well, since I got here."

"Glad to be of service, even if it is just meeting your needs of normalcy." He meant this too. People needed something that wasn't totally out of their realm.

Which was exactly the reason that from time to time Grigg read nonfiction. Sometimes he even read nonfiction that had nothing to do with his interests. Now that was reaching for balance.

It took a moment for Lex to recognize Robin and when he did, he couldn't help just blinking for a moment. The red dress was very much an improvement to a gun in hand. Then he smiled and approached her. "You know, I must say, I didn't recognize you at first. I much prefer this look."

"Are you saying I can't pull off militant hot girl?" Robin asked, striking a pose with her hips and trying to pretend that she was actually offended when she didn't much care about that when she knew she was hot as hell when she dressed up that way. "But thanks!" she said brightly. "You don't look half bad yourself."
