The rain seemed never ending, but that never stopped Ellie from doing anything before. She'd found decent clothing for the weather - umbrella included - earlier that week. It made for an actual pleasant walk most days when she could enjoy the weather without being soaked by the time she got to the Compound

"My mother used to make donuts on Sunday morning for my dad to have with his coffee," she said, brow furrowed just a bit like she'd just remembered that piece of information. It, at least, got Jack smiling in the wee hours of the morning. She started the coffee by rinsing the pot out, filling the tank with a full pot's worth of water and carefully measuring out the grounds for what would become the best damn pot of coffee she'd ever make.
It was a ratio thing.
She watched the coffee start to drip.

"This is the first time I'm trying this recipe," she replied. It had sounded good, at least, which was what led Ellie to make the food in the first place. "There'll be extra once they come out of the oven, if you want some."

"Oh come on," she grumbled. "Don't deny me coffee."

"Need some help?" she asked. She'd fought with the machine plenty of times herself, having a morning clinic shift like she did each week. Coffee had been near a requirement that day for her.

He wasn't expecting to see anyone in the kitchen at this time of day, but he smiled at the woman anyway and said, "Good morning."

"Good morning," she greeted. "The rain's still coming down hard, I see."

Ellie had just been about to check on how they were cooking when he asked. "Doughnuts, actually. A new recipe I found that I thought sounded good. There'll be extra, if you'd like some."

"Ellie! I'm not grounded anymore!" She sniffs the air theatrically, like a dog in a cartoon might. "Did you cook doughnuts?"
Reply
"Oh really?" she asked, placing her magazine aside to lean down so she was a bit more at her eye level. "Well, that sounds like something to celebrate. How about you go sit down in a seat and I'll bring you a few and some juice?"

Karen hops up into a seat and kicks both bare feet. She was wearing her wellies earlier, but she took them off and left them by the front door.
"I hope nobody steals my wellies."

"Wellies?" she asked, having never heard the term. "What are those? I'm sure they'll be fine, either way."

He'd taken advantage of a slight lull in the rain to come down to the Compound, though it'd probably be just as bad as before by the time he headed back. Nodding to the women at the counter, he smiled and mumbled a hello before trying to find a cup for coffee. In moving around her, he caught sight of her reading material. "Isn't it kinda hard to get that stuff around here?" he asked, brow arched. Wasn't like there were stores around. If there had been, he'd've seen a lot less of Summer.

"Oh, yes," she admitted, looking admittedly a little sheepish. "I guess I'm just looking for ideas. Maybe see if I can do something to mimic them here."

Pouring some coffee for himself, he nodded. "Good luck with that," he said. "And congratulations. Being engaged and all, I mean."

The timer sounded, and Ellie put the magazine aside then, grabbing the oven mitts and headed over to take out the doughnuts. Over her shoulder, she asked, "Would you like some doughnuts with your coffee? Just need to let them cool for a few minutes and they'll be good for eating."

...like a lot of other days.
He smelled the donuts on his way to the stairs, and wasn't surprised at all to see that Ellie was the culprit.
"Hey! Donuts!" Chuck said, eyes immediately on the pastries before he looked up to acknowledge his sister there, "Donuts...and Ellie. But mostly Ellie."

She was pretty sure she didn't even have to ask.

Especially if it meant doughnuts. Or pretty much anything that Ellie'd made.

They seemed easy enough - it'd just take putting tiny boxes together and decorating the outside. It wouldn't be exactly the same, but she thought she could figure a way to make it close.
