The rain seemed never ending, but that never stopped Ellie from doing anything before. She'd found decent clothing for the weather - umbrella included - earlier that week. It made for an actual pleasant walk most days when she could enjoy the weather without being soaked by the time she got to the Compound ( Read more... )

She usually wasn't a donut girl. It was yogurt and salads and fruit (now) or fish. She stayed away from the stereotypical donut thing. Far away. Except that today it was hitting her in the face as she went for coffee, again. Second cup. She stopped and eyed the woman.

"My mother used to make donuts on Sunday morning for my dad to have with his coffee," she said, brow furrowed just a bit like she'd just remembered that piece of information. It, at least, got Jack smiling in the wee hours of the morning. She started the coffee by rinsing the pot out, filling the tank with a full pot's worth of water and carefully measuring out the grounds for what would become the best damn pot of coffee she'd ever make.

It was a ratio thing.

She watched the coffee start to drip.

Ellie had been vaguely aware someone had come into the kitchen, though she only looked up from the magazine when she heard her speak. The woman wasn't familiar to her, but she smiled at her all the same.

"This is the first time I'm trying this recipe," she replied. It had sounded good, at least, which was what led Ellie to make the food in the first place. "There'll be extra once they come out of the oven, if you want some."

"Always helpful to have a second opinion on anything baked," Reese said quietly. "I'd definitely like to try one. New recipes can be a challenge." Mild irritation at the coffeemaker set in a second later as the light indicating the pot was on went off. She jiggled it gently, then frowned.

"Oh come on," she grumbled. "Don't deny me coffee."

Ellie watched her for a moment before setting aside her magazine for the moment to head over to see what was the matter.

"Need some help?" she asked. She'd fought with the machine plenty of times herself, having a morning clinic shift like she did each week. Coffee had been near a requirement that day for her.

Harry had missed breakfast, so by the time he'd got himself to the Compound, cleaned off the mud, dried out a bit and rolled his trouser legs back down, he was hungry. It meant he wouldn't get the usual sumptuous breakfast, but he could manage tea and toast at least.

He wasn't expecting to see anyone in the kitchen at this time of day, but he smiled at the woman anyway and said, "Good morning."

Ellie had just finished the magazine she was looking at when she noticed someone coming in. She smiled in kind, placing the magazine aside on the counter.

"Good morning," she greeted. "The rain's still coming down hard, I see."

"Just like home," he joked, because if he didn't say it, someone else would. He put the kettle on before he realised what was different. "Something smells good."

"We didn't get as much as we've been getting lately where I'm from, but I have to admit, I don't mind it too much," she said. As long as it didn't last too long, at least.

Ellie had just been about to check on how they were cooking when he asked. "Doughnuts, actually. A new recipe I found that I thought sounded good. There'll be extra, if you'd like some."

Karen isn't grounded anymore! She skips into the kitchen and, when she sees Ellie, runs right over.

"Ellie! I'm not grounded anymore!" She sniffs the air theatrically, like a dog in a cartoon might. "Did you cook doughnuts?"

Ellie looked up just as Karen skipped over, and she couldn't help but smile. She'd just been about to start making the second batch, but that could wait for the moment.

"Oh really?" she asked, placing her magazine aside to lean down so she was a bit more at her eye level. "Well, that sounds like something to celebrate. How about you go sit down in a seat and I'll bring you a few and some juice?"

"Yes, please."

Karen hops up into a seat and kicks both bare feet. She was wearing her wellies earlier, but she took them off and left them by the front door.

"I hope nobody steals my wellies."

A few were ready with the bit of glaze she put on them, so she placed just a few on the plate for her and headed over to get juice from the fridge to pour for her.

"Wellies?" she asked, having never heard the term. "What are those? I'm sure they'll be fine, either way."

Ryan seemed to be developing a talent for walking in on pretty brunettes as they baked. Then again, with the island population being what it was, it probably would've taken actual effort not to manage that a few times.

He'd taken advantage of a slight lull in the rain to come down to the Compound, though it'd probably be just as bad as before by the time he headed back. Nodding to the women at the counter, he smiled and mumbled a hello before trying to find a cup for coffee. In moving around her, he caught sight of her reading material. "Isn't it kinda hard to get that stuff around here?" he asked, brow arched. Wasn't like there were stores around. If there had been, he'd've seen a lot less of Summer.

It was a little hard to look at all the pretty dresses being offered as suggestions of what to wear, as much as she knew she was sure she'd be able to get something she wanted by having someone hand make it. She was looking thoughtfully at a page with one of the more expensive dresses in the magazine when she realized someone was in the kitchen now, too.

"Oh, yes," she admitted, looking admittedly a little sheepish. "I guess I'm just looking for ideas. Maybe see if I can do something to mimic them here."

The idea of people getting married and going on with their normal lives was kind of confusing, actually. It wasn't like life stopped just because they'd turned up here, no, but at the same time, it was just so ordinary that it wound up seeming out of place.

Pouring some coffee for himself, he nodded. "Good luck with that," he said. "And congratulations. Being engaged and all, I mean."

She let out a soft laugh, her smile widening. It was hard not to be excited about it. "Thank you. It's a few months off, yet, but I'm already pretty excited."

The timer sounded, and Ellie put the magazine aside then, grabbing the oven mitts and headed over to take out the doughnuts. Over her shoulder, she asked, "Would you like some doughnuts with your coffee? Just need to let them cool for a few minutes and they'll be good for eating."

Chuck had managed to brave the weather too, coming up to the compound for a day of Call of Duty. He didn't know if Karen would be around or not, but maybe it would give him a chance to perfect a strategy or two. They didn't really get too many rainy days in southern California, but somehow Chuck thought it'd be a good way to spend the day.

...like a lot of other days.

He smelled the donuts on his way to the stairs, and wasn't surprised at all to see that Ellie was the culprit.

"Hey! Donuts!" Chuck said, eyes immediately on the pastries before he looked up to acknowledge his sister there, "Donuts...and Ellie. But mostly Ellie."

"Doughnuts," she repeated, looking a little amused as she glanced up over the magazine to look at her brother. "Glad to hear I'm placed above them. Looking to be a taste tester this morning?"

She was pretty sure she didn't even have to ask.

"Sis," Chuck said, walking up to lean against the counter next to her, "I think by now you'd know that I'm pretty much always up for a taste test."

Especially if it meant doughnuts. Or pretty much anything that Ellie'd made.

"I ask just to be polite," she replied, grinning faintly. She motioned him over to come look at what she was looking at in the magazine. "Do you think we could manage to make these little boxes to put the wedding favors in?"

They seemed easy enough - it'd just take putting tiny boxes together and decorating the outside. It wouldn't be exactly the same, but she thought she could figure a way to make it close.
