Karen has one thing that she wants to talk about.
Since the other day, she's done a lot of reading. She's read books about Germany and the War and the Nazis and now she's curious. In the afternoon, Karen is supposed to do her homework. She's sitting in the rec-room with her reading book and her writing book, her maths and she's got to draw a picture for Mrs Jones and she's got some Sign Language flash cards to pratice.

Karen likes playing in the mornings, before anybody else is really around. Rollie and Shadow make her get up and have a shower or stuff but she doesn't really talk to them. She has to be ready to talk to someone and, until then, she's in a little world of her own ( Read more... ) -

Even when she doesn't have homework, sometimes Karen likes reading just because. She knows that Rollie and Shadow like it when she reads. She's sitting on the settee with her feet up on ShorHor, and she's got odd socks on, one stripey and one spotty, and she's reading Where The Wild Things Are to Puffin. Haltingly. Even though she's six now, quite often, Karen still clambers into bed with Rollie or Shadow. She has nightmares, or she wakes up feeling homesick or she wakes up and her feet have been sticking out of the bed and she's cold. Karen is not as other five year olds. While she often says what's on her mind, and she's often almost pathological honest as a matter of course, she is also possessed of a finely tuned sense of other people's emotions. When it suits her, Karen has tact.

It's been a long day. They did some colouring and Brian read her a book, and then she'd needed the toilet about a million times, and then she dressed up, and now she's lying on the settee and she's really tired and she's kind of grumpy. She strokes Puffin's head and he tries to bite her fingers.
Karen frowns at him.
"No, Puffin! Bad!"
