Even when she doesn't have homework, sometimes Karen likes reading just because. She knows that Rollie and Shadow like it when she reads. She's sitting on the settee with her feet up on ShorHor, and she's got odd socks on, one stripey and one spotty, and she's reading Where The Wild Things Are to Puffin. Haltingly. She knows most of the words,

"Karen?" says Rollie, stalking up to her, his voice tight but not accusing. Not yet, anyway. "I don't suppose you have any idea why my name is listed with the Council nominees, and the Council office assures me that I did, indeed, collect the signatures of ten people to support me?"

As nonchalantly as she can manage, Karen looks up at him over the top of her book balanced on her belly and raises both eyebrows.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"Are you lying to me?" says Rollie seriously. "If you're lying to me and I find out, it will not be fun for you."

Karen weights up how much trouble she's likely to be in if she tells him versus how much trouble she's going to be in if she lies about it. She huffs a sigh.
