The rain seemed never ending, but that never stopped Ellie from doing anything before. She'd found decent clothing for the weather - umbrella included - earlier that week. It made for an actual pleasant walk most days when she could enjoy the weather without being soaked by the time she got to the Compound ( Read more... )

Marshall's nose was superior to most men. It really worked more on the level of a blood hound, the way it sniffed out danger or yummy goodness. This time, it definitely had scented out yummy goodness.

His nose led him to the kitchen, where he was pleased to see donut holes and Ellie.

"Hey there, domestic goddess," Marshall said cheerfully, practically floating on air a la Pepe Le Pew to the plate of glorious donut holes.

"Domestic goddess is a new one," she said, biting back a smile when she noticed who had walked in. She probably should have known he'd pop in eventually. Just having gotten done with the second batch, she turned from him to put the new one into the oven. Over her shoulder, she added, "And you're just in time. I needed someone to taste test these for me."

"I can barely believe no one's called you that before, Ellie." True, Marshall hadn't tasted a wide variety of Ellie's offerings, but he'd tasted enough to know that she basically ruled in the kitchen.

Adjusting the hem of his shirt, Marshall then puffed out his chest importantly. "I would be honored to be your official taste tester." His mouth was beginning to water just looking at those donut holes.

Ellie had a feeling he'd say that, and she was already placing a few warm pieces onto a plate for him. It'd be easier to know if it was a good if she had an outside opinion. Heading over to him, she offered what was on the plate.

"Take. I have another batch or two, so feel free to have a couple," she explained.

With the rain having set in, Carla Jean was spending more time than usual in the Compound. It wasn't as if she much liked hanging around her hut anyway, but she at least had a good excuse, now. She'd come into the kitchen earlier than usual, still damp and windswept from the walk over in the persistant rain, and at the sight of Ellie, slid into a seat across from her.

Seeing the wedding magazines was nearly enough to threaten her composure, but she saw no reason to let herself get upset, especially not so early. Instead, she turned her attention to other things. "What's that you're makin'?" she asked, gesturing with her head towards the oven. "Smells good."

Ellie knew enough to place the magazine aside when she realized who had sat down near her. It didn't really take too much to realize it wasn't really a subject she'd want to talk about.

"Doughnuts, actually," she replied, glancing over her shoulder at the oven. "I'm making extra, so you're welcome to have some when they're ready, if you're hungry."

After months on the island, something as commonplace as doughnuts sounded like a luxury, and one there was no way for her to turn down. It was focusing on little things like that that helped her keep herself together, anyway. On a small scale, the island wasn't so bad. It was when she let herself think about bigger events that she got upset all over again.

"Yeah, alright," she replied with something of a grin, nearly bemused. "I didn't even know we could have those around here." It made a certain kind of sense, come to think of it, with what they did have, but it was worth noting all the same.

"Yeah, I was surprised I found a good recipe that I could make here," she admitted. It seemed cooking was one of the few things she could still count on being able to do on the island.

She stood up, then, walking over to the oven. Over her shoulder, she asked, "Would you like some coffee, too? I put some on before for myself."

He'd come back in the kitchen for a refill on his tea and found Ellie bustling around like a pro, making something he wasn't all that familiar with. His brow furrowed, he put his mug down on the counter, smiling crookedly. "My, my." His grin spread wider. "This is quite the operation."

Ellie had just taken out the first batch when she realized someone was speaking to her. She turned her head to look over her shoulder and smiled when she realized who it was.

"Shepherd Book," she greeted, warmly. "Good morning. Would you like some doughnuts?"

He smiled back, nodding in appreciation. "Doughnuts? Very impressive." He paused, head cocked slightly to the side. "I'd love to try it." He hadn't seen anything quite like it here, and it seemed just too pleasant to pass up. He hung back, letting her take the trays out, mindful of the hot surfaces.
