The rain seemed never ending, but that never stopped Ellie from doing anything before. She'd found decent clothing for the weather - umbrella included - earlier that week. It made for an actual pleasant walk most days when she could enjoy the weather without being soaked by the time she got to the Compound ( Read more... )

Harry had missed breakfast, so by the time he'd got himself to the Compound, cleaned off the mud, dried out a bit and rolled his trouser legs back down, he was hungry. It meant he wouldn't get the usual sumptuous breakfast, but he could manage tea and toast at least.

He wasn't expecting to see anyone in the kitchen at this time of day, but he smiled at the woman anyway and said, "Good morning."

Ellie had just finished the magazine she was looking at when she noticed someone coming in. She smiled in kind, placing the magazine aside on the counter.

"Good morning," she greeted. "The rain's still coming down hard, I see."

"Just like home," he joked, because if he didn't say it, someone else would. He put the kettle on before he realised what was different. "Something smells good."

"We didn't get as much as we've been getting lately where I'm from, but I have to admit, I don't mind it too much," she said. As long as it didn't last too long, at least.

Ellie had just been about to check on how they were cooking when he asked. "Doughnuts, actually. A new recipe I found that I thought sounded good. There'll be extra, if you'd like some."

"I could do without so much rain." At least when it was hot the clothes box refusing to give him any shoes wasn't too much of a problem. Now it meant he was constantly muddy and his feet were cold.

"I would love some, thank you." He smiled at her. "I didn't know you could make doughnuts. I thought they just came from a shop." Which was silly now he came to think about it.

She let out a laugh at the response as she took a peek inside. Really, she actually wished she could just go to the store for them. It was easier for her, too.

At least they were looking good so far.

"Well, someone has to make them at the shop," she pointed out. "And they'll probably taste a little different from what you're used to, since I'm baking them and not deep frying them. I'm pretty sure this'll taste good, anyway."

"I never really thought about how they got there." All food had to be made, he supposed, it was just that most of it came on a plate.

"If they taste as good as they smell, they'll definitely be good." He smiled at her.

"Here's hoping," she laughed, as she closed the oven. Just a few more minutes and they'd be done. She supposed it was good she had a taste tester either way. "I'm Ellie, by the way. It's nice to meet you."

"Harry. Nice to meet you too." The kettle boiled then, so he started on the tea making. "Would you like a cup?" Since she was offering him doughnuts it seemed only fair to offer her a drink in return.

"Oh, that'd be great, thank you," she replied with a smile. She drank both, and it saved her the time of making a cup of coffee for herself. "The doughnuts should be done soon. You should be able to have them with your drink."

Making two cups of tea wasn't really much more work than making one, so it didn't take long for him to have them ready. "I don't think I've ever had doughnuts for breakfast before," he mused, as he brought the tea over to the table. He didn't often have breakfast this late either.

"I didn't usually eat them," she admitted. It was strange, the sort of foods you crave when you didn't have them readily available. She'd gotten them out by then, and covered half with glaze and the other without. "I just came across the recipe while I was looking for different sorts of magazines. It's strange what that bookshelf gives to you."

She placed her second batch in, and only then put a few on two plates and followed him to the table with them to sit.

"It is that," he agreed. He didn't really tend to read many books, so the bookshelf didn't bother him too much. It was the clothes box that would drive him mad if he let it. "But you found a magazine as well," he pointed out, having seen her reading one when he came in.

While his tea cooled he reached out for a doughnut and took a bite. "This is good," he said, after he'd swallowed.

"I'm not sure if it gave me this to be helpful or to mock me," she admitted with a slight laugh. "It's going to be interesting trying to make everything I would've bought otherwise."

Her smile softened at the compliment. "I'm glad. There's only so many things you can make here, so finding any good recipe I can make, I'm grabbing. Cooking relaxes me, sometimes."

"Really? I can't imagine finding cooking relaxing." As far as he was concerned it was anything but. But if it meant she was going to cook more he wasn't going to complain.

With the doughnut polished off, his tea was cool enough to drink. "Your fiance is a lucky man," he said, her ring having caught the light. He just hoped her fiance was here and she wasn't going to get upset about him being at home or killed or something.

Ellie blushed at the compliment, her head ducking slightly. She was just as lucky, and she knew that.

"He proposed to me pretty recently," she admitted, unable to hide her smile. "So we're working on planning things now."
