Bio from Lauren's
Official Site and interviews: The blonde blue-eyed Lauren Lee Smith was born June 19th, 1980 in Vancouver, British Columbia to Lynda. As the stepdaughter of a documentary filmmaker, she became well acquainted with a public lifestyle at a young age, along with her brothers, Travis Smith and Guy Ferguson. Her exposure to filmmaking and movies like Labyrinth and The Neverending Story ignited her desire to act, from age 2. Lauren attended
Henry James Cambie Secondary School in Richmond, British Columbia and traveled the world with her parents and brothers, living throughout Canada, the U.S., Costa Rica, Korea and Nice, France before settling in Los Angeles, California when she was 14. There she was approached by a fashion scout to begin a professional modeling career of several international fashion shoots. She took two years of acting classes and performed some Shakespeare roles in small theaters, including Twelfth Night's Olivia and Cymbeline's Imogen at Topanga's
Theatricum Botanicum. Returning to Vancouver to sign with an agent in August 1999, Lauren landed her first professional acting job - the part of a girl given a date rape drug in Sylvester Stallone's Get Carter. Her cousin, actor
Myles Ferguson, was killed in a traffic accident in 2000 while she was filming Christy: A Change of Seasons. One of Lauren's main goals as an actress is to never play the same type of character twice. Soon after being turned down for the roles of Smallville's Chloe and Lana, Lauren was chosen for Mutant X's Emma DeLauro, and nominated for a 2002
Gemini Award for episode "Double Vision." She made Playback Magazine's
10 to Watch list after being nominated for a
Vancouver Film Critics Award for the controversial Lie With Me's Leila. In 2008, she received
Leo Award for Normal's Sherri. Lauren
won hearts as the lesbian sous chef Lara in Showtime's The L Word, but in reality, she met photographer
Erik Lee Steingroever in 2006 while filming One Way in Germany, and the pair
married April 4th, 2009 in Cultus Lake Memorial Chapel. The next month, Lauren won a
Leo Award for Helen's Mathilde, and in 2011, earned a second
Gemini nomination for The Listener's Michelle. In 2012, she teamed up with director Terry Miles to co-finance and produce their own Cinemanovels film with Jennifer Beales, which was selected for the Toronto International Film Festival and earned 3
Leo nominations, with a best actress win for Lauren. Lauren's special skills include snowboarding, (novice) ice skating, rollerblading, basketball, swimming and horseback riding; she also enjoys painting, reading, hiking. Being Canadian, she is also a hockey fan. Lauren's favorite colors are blue, purple and red. Lauren is a dog lover; she formerly owned a Dalmation named Casper and a Jack Russell Terrier named Coby, and currently has two dogs named
Wilbur and Benjamin at her home in Colpitt Lake. Lauren has a Que sera, sera ("what will be will be") tattoo on her right forearm, Nil Desperandum (Latin for "never despair") tattoo on her back, and her obsession with ants is evidenced by an ant tattoo on her hip, her ant ring and her favorite science fiction movie, Them. Though she's not really into science fiction herself, Lauren's older brother is. Her superpower of choice would be flight, followed by invisibility. Lauren's favorite show is Six Feet Under; her favorite films are Labyrinth, The Sheltering Sky, Tin Drum, Ma Mere, Lola, The Piano Teacher, Wild at Heart and The Shining; her favorite book is Ken Follet's Pillars of the Earth. Actors she admires include Isabelle Huppert, Jennifer Connelly, Cate Blanchett and Juliette Lewis; she'd love to work with actors John Malkovich, Christopher Walken, Sean Penn and Kate Winslet and directors David Lynch, Michael Haneke, Tom Tykwer, and Fassbinder.
Trivia
* Lauren was very close to her grandmother, Pat, who passed away May, 2013.
* Lauren first met Forbes March (Jesse Kilmartin) when she was 12 years old, in her first Vancouver acting class. [

* Lauren bought her first car, a white 1992 Jetta, with earnings from Christy. " I think it ran for about a year and then there was just one problem after another - it probably was not a good idea to buy a car based on how cute it was. I probably should have actually got it checked out." [
