The Anatomy of Hope JJ Abrams and HBO Team for Pilot: New medical drama project from the Lost producer.
by Eric Goldman
January 4, 2007 - The ever busy JJ Abrams is in talks to work on his first project for HBO. The cable network is going forward on a pilot for a new medical drama, which will focus on patients battling against cancer. Abrams is in negotiations to executive produce the project and to also possibly direct the pilot. The as yet untitled pilot is based on Jerome Groopman's book The Anatomy of Hope: How People Prevail in the Face of Illness. Groopman -- a Harvard Medical School professor and a writer for the New Yorker -- recounted in the book his experiences with seriously ill cancer patients, who impressed Groopman with how they maintained a feeling of hope.

Claire McBuffy at L4: Lauren Lee Smith Lauren Lee Smith and Anne Ramsey Q&A: Part 1.
Attendee: I’m curious to know about what movies you have coming out?
Lauren: ....and then I shot a pilot for HBO called Anatomy of Hope, and we’re still waiting to hear about what’s going to happen with that. So, ya, hopefully, hopefully, some of them will make it on air at some point.
Anne: What was Anatomy of Hope about?
Lauren: Ummm, another uplifting story. Uh, about cancer. Cancer patients. People living with cancer. *Laughing* Yeah, yeah I know, I know *laughs* I thought the same thing when I read it.
Anne: Well I love HBO.
Lauren: Well who’s going to want to watch this! It’s so depressing. It’s it’s very uplifting and it tries to sort of …it puts a positive light, a positive spin, on on the way that you can can deal with it.
Anne: Where was that shot?
Lauren: Los Angeles
Anne: Oh great
Lauren: Yeah. So we’ll see.
