Peter Mitchell always wanted to do a crossover episode between his show, Murdoch Mysteries, and another program. The historical drama’s executive producer and head writer got his wish with fellow CBC drama Republic of Doyle; the Toronto-based Murdoch jetted to Doyle’s Newfoundland headquarters for a week to film the Season 7 storyline “Republic of Murdoch.” The story finds Toronto detective William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson) and constable George Crabtree (Jonny Harris, a native Newfoundlander himself) travelling to St. John’s, on the tail of a cagey individual they believe is tied to the poisoning of an antiques dealer. The cagey individual? A man named Jacob Doyle. In a fun twist to the usual crossover episode, Republic of Doyle lead Allan Hawco portrays not Jake, but his grandfather, from whom the present-day detective has picked up many of his traits, including being a “pain in the arse.”

Evans and Hawco aren’t the only Canadian talent popping up in Season 7. Other guests include Rookie Blue‘s Charlotte Sullivan and The Listener‘s Tara Spencer-Nairn and Lauren Lee Smith; returning faces include Peter Stebbings as inventor James Pendrick and Peter Keleghan as wily Canadian government agent Terrance Meyers.
