Christy's Journal by Lauren Lee Smith

WEEK 6
So, that's the glamorous life of an actress. Sometimes my mom visits the set and stays with me at the hotel, which is a welcome change to the routine.
....
WEEK 7
I'm sorry to be so late in posting this, but my life has been a little complicated lately and writing my journal has been the last thing on my mind. However, now that a few days have passed I'd like to take this opportunity to tell you about my cousin Myles Ferguson who died as a result of a traffic accident one week ago. Myles was like a brother to me. He was also a well-known nineteen year-old actor here in Vancouver. You probably saw his work on television shows like "The X-Files", "Outer Limits" and "Highlander." And he was in the cast of "Edgemont Road" on the Fox Family Channel, the films "Little Criminals", "Avalanche", "Air Bud" and the upcoming "Spooky House."

But Myles was a whole lot more than a successful actor. He was a totally fun and irreverent friend -- the kind of guy everybody liked. In fact, his nickname was "Smiles." He took great pride in giving the absolutely worst Christmas presents possible (last year I got a loaf of tie-dyed bread). And he was a really good musician. His father and mine used to love jamming with him at family gatherings. But as close as we all were, he and my uncle Mike had the most special relationship. They were best friends, rather than father and son. Myles lived with my family for a time in Los Angeles and in Vancouver, which made the news of his accident all the harder to take. He spent last week in a coma in intensive care, but even three surgeries couldn’t save him. On Friday I rushed from the set to be with him at the end.

This has been a surreal, difficult time for me… trying to find enough strength and perspective to get through work every day. I can’t thank the people at "Christy" enough for all their love, patience and prayers. I did my best not to take my frustrations out on them - which is probably why my little brother, Guy, and I found ourselves smashing bottles in the garage most of the weekend. Myles Ferguson was a wonderful person and he didn’t deserve to die. But I take comfort in the fact that he had begun a personal spiritual journey in the past few months. He joined a church and became active in a youth group there. He asked a lot of questions about God and through worship found the answers he was looking for. He found peace. But perhaps the most important of all Myles didn't leave anything unsaid with the people he loved. And that included me, for which I will always be grateful. I wish you all could have known him.

September 20: PATHOLOGY: First report and photos
-Abbie Bernstein

In the scene being filmed, actor Milo (HEROES) Ventimiglia watches actress Lauren Lee (TRICK ’R TREAT) Smith is wielding a huge pair of what look like hedge-clippers-a real pathology tool-to spread a ribcage. Smith says this is less of a challenge than she had feared. “My upper body strength is pretty weak, but it was actually a lot easier than I expected. I’ve been sending pictures to my mom and grandma-‘Hey, Mom, look at what I got to do today!’ ” she laughs.

Lauren Lee Smith and Anne Ramsey Q&A: Part 1.

Attendee: Lauren, Lie with me, amazing movie like Claire said.
Lauren: Oh thank you.

Attendee: What was granma thinking about it?
Lauren: What was Granma thinking about it?

Attendee: You know, can she watch you?
Lauren: You know that’s so funny because ummm, a lot of people have asked me like, Oh my god would you let your parents see that?! Or your brothers? Or whatever. And the answer is always, of course. I would never do anything I would be ashamed for my family to see. Umm, however my brothers chose not to see it. Umm, *laughs*, but I was always very open with them. And told them exactly what they would be seeing if they did. My grandma is kind of funny, because my mum came with me to the premiere in Toronto. And during filming I was telling… my grandma and I are very close,…and I was telling her all about it. And she’d heard bits and pieces, and sort of understands there’s a lot of nudity in the film, and uh, my mum wouldn’t let her watch it. *laughs* My mum was like, yeah, I don’t know…she’s you know… At the time she was like 94. She’s like, I don’t think so. So I actually snuck it to my Granma. Umm…
Anne: Awww, that’s cute.
Lauren: Yeah. Uh, my Granma and I have our own secret little relationship going on. So…And she, she loved the film. She was very proud of it as well.

Attendee: Cause I lend DVD’s to my Granma
Lauren: Yeah…

Attendee: And I gave her that movie.
Lauren: You did! *laughs*

Attendee: She turned it off after 5 minutes.
Lauren: I, I can understand that. I can understand that definitely. Yep.

Lauren was also asked if she is a good cook herself and she said that making toast and instant noodles is pretty much all she can do She also has a wonderful mother who keeps stocking her fridge on a regular basis She also talked about her grandma who is over 90 years old and whom she is close to. One day her and her grandma were talking about tattoos and the grandma said that she regrets never having gotten one. Lauren told her that it’s never too late and they actually went out and got tattoos together and Lauren got in trouble with her mom afterwards Lauren herself has 7 tattoos.

Lauren Lee Smith: Meet the Newest Member of Grissom's Team...Riley Adams.
Words: Bryan Cairns

Already, Riley has accompanied all of her teammates to various crime scenes, which means Smith has been exposed to some truly gory sights... "I really dig all that. I find it fascinating," offers Smith. "The more bizarre the better. I got to do my ride-along and go to the crime lab - I eat all that up. I had been to the LA county morgue for the movie Pathology so I didn't have to pleasure of going back. All of that stuff is so fascinating and one of the reasons I love this job so much is that, as an actor, I am allowed to explore these strange worlds and find out all of this information. I love the gross stuff. I have lots of brothers!" [Laughs]
....
Nonetheless, relocating to Los Angeles from her native Canada initially re-enforced those nerves.
"It was a bit of a culture shock, but I'm getting into it now," says Smith. "We had a hiatus for about a month, so I spent some time going, 'Okay, I'm living in LA now and that's different. I've got a dog. I could get used to this.' Previously, a lot of my work had been filmed in Canada. It's great because my family have lived in LA on and off since I was 14-years-old so I do have a few good family friends in the area. I talk to my mom and it's cold and pouring with rain in Vancouver. I'm like, 'Oh really? It's hot here and I'm going to the beach."

ET Exclusive: Lauren Lee Smith and Erik Steingroever's wedding

ET Canada: Just like a CSI mystery, Lauren Lee Smith has cracked the case on how to throw the perfect BC wedding. And today, she shares her secrets.
Lauren Lee Smith: Keep it traditional in the most untraditional way possible.
ET Canada: With just a few days off from CSI, they decided to tie the knot outside of Vancouver in picturesque Cultus Lake.
Lauren Lee Smith: It's a tiny little town, and we're sort of coming in and going to do a big giant overhaul.
ET Canada: The actress and her fiance, photographer Erik Steingroever, plan to show off their creative personalities.
Lauren Lee Smith: We're like, "I know, let's have everything we want, sort of! Why not?"
Samantha Berry, Wedding Planner: They had amazing taste. They knew exactly what they wanted coming into it, and we just made it happen.
ET Canada: That includes three locations with very different looks.
Lauren Lee Smith: The church is going to be very sort of bohemian, with wildflowers, very kish. And the restaurant is going to be all white and sort of a very zen keel. And then for the hall, we're going to do a kind of burlesque lounge type thing.
ET Canada: With 85 guests expected from around the world, the fuss-free couple will serve local dishes of prime rib and pomme de frites.
Warren Dean, Executive Chef: So we designed the menu around the look, and gave it a very nice look.
ET Canada: And they'll finish it off with a beautiful three tiered carrot cake covered in almonds.
Lauren Lee Smith: I'm really happy with it. It's really pretty.
ET Canada: Tomorrow we'll check in with the bride as she prepares to walk down the aisle.
Lauren Lee Smith: The sort of nervous tummy is starting to kick in.
....
ET Canada: Here comes the bride. ET Canada has been with Lauren Lee Smith every step of the way as she's prepared to walk down the aisle. Now today, the CSI star's big day is here, and you're all invited.
Lauren Lee Smith: Hey, ET Canada, thanks for being here today.
ET Canada: From the final preparations to the dress fitting.
Maid of honor: I think she looks like an princess.
ET Canada: To the morning madness of a wedding, it all comes down to this. With her two brothers escorting Lauren into the church to give her away, and her lovely maid of honor, the blushing bride looks beautiful in her bohemian style gown and vintage inspired leaflet, holding a tiny bouquet of flowers.
Lauren Lee Smith: I am looking forward to seeing family and friends that I have not seen in ages. And then, you know, having a happy, healthy marriage.
ET Canada: While none of Lauren's CSI co-stars were at the event, the couple were lucky enough to have their closest friends and family by their side to share this very special day. After exchanging their vows in the intimate Cultus Lake Memorial Church, Mr. and Mrs. Steingroever emerged to cheers and bubbles. It was three years ago that love blossomed between Lauren and Erik while working on a film in Germany.
Lauren Lee Smith: He wouldn't even look at me until the end of the movie! But I caught him. I conquered. Yes.
ET Canada: Now, near the town that Lauren was born and with the picturesque Canadian Rockies surrounding them, they sealed their love in marriage. And the newlyweds also shared some very quick moments on the dock.
Erik: Bye, ET!
Lauren: Hey, ET!
Photographer: Why don't you dance around?
ET Canada: Hey, congratulations, you guys, from all of us here at ET Canada. And we can now report that once CSI wraps for the season, the happy couple will be off to Iceland for their romantic honeymoon.

Woodland Escape: Lauren Lee Smith & Erik Steingroever April 4, 2009
Photography Angela Hubbard/HubbardPhotography.com

Lauren Lee Smith, best known for her role as Riley Adams on hit television show CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and Erik Steingroever, renowned photographer, may have met while filming on a set, but for their elegant springtime nuptials, the twosome exchanged the glitz and glamour of Hollywood's spotlight for British Columbia's Fraser Valley -- a serene and calming atmosphere. Beginning the day with a beautiful ceremony at the Cultus Lake Memorial Church, Lauren walked down the aisle in a flowing Les Habitudes Gercian-inspired gown and dazzling silver Christian Louboutin pumps. "We had three very distinct themes. Our church ceremony was a bit more boho. Our reception was very romantic and decorated in all-white and our dance hall had a burlesque motif," Lauren explains. Following their romantic vows, Lauren and Erik made their way to the sparkling waters of the surrounding lake and used that as the backdrop to their wedding photos. The woodland theme continued with their reception at Pala Lago, a lodge-style getaway nestled in the forest, where the newlyweds enjoyed some quality time with 95 treasured guests. "Erik and I felt so lucky to enjoy every last second with our family and friends who had come from all over the world -- some of whom had never even met before," Lauren adds. "From beginning to end, it was a beautiful, calm celebration. No stress, no drama -- everything went perfectly. It was exactly how we had imagined it would be," Lauren recalls with a smile.

Most unexpected moment "Waking up to beautiful sunshine after a week of rain and snow," Lauren happily exclaims.

Favorite Gifts "A cookbook that every one of the guests contributed to and a home-made quilt made from pieces of clothes from both families," gushes Lauren.

The fruit of Lauren Lee Smith's labour

Lauren Lee Smith
Profession: Actress
Age: 30
Hometown: Vancouver
Notable achievements: Won a Leo Award in 2009 for Best Supporting Performance by a Female in a Feature Length Drama in Sandra Nettlebeck’s Helen; appeared in television series, The L Word, Mutant X, Twilight Zone, and films such as A Night for Dying Tigers, Art School Confidential, The Last Kiss, Lie With Me, Hindenburg
Upcoming: The Listener, Friday at 8 p.m. on CTV and Fox International channels; HBO Canada’s Good Dog, Sunday at 8 p.m.

Lauren Lee Smith is one of Canada’s rising stars. In 2009, she played Riley Adams on the hit CBS crime series, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Nowadays, she’s best known as Sergeant Michelle McCluskey on CTV’s The Listener. The actress is comfortable with the spotlight on television and on the road where she drives a 2009 Mercedes-Benz GL450 4Matic SUV.

Why did you buy a Mercedes GL?
I had just got the show CSI and I was looking for a new car. My husband is German and he insisted we get a German-made car. We did a lot of research and it was one of the safest cars on the market that year so we decided to go with that one. It’s a very nice car.

Did you cross shop against other German competitors like a BMW X5 or Audi Q7?
No. My husband is pretty particular about his cars. In his opinion, the Mercedes are the best of the best.

What does a Mercedes-Benz GL450 say about you?
I don’t think Mercedes-Benz says anything about me, really. I was in a situation where I was able to get a really nice car and I’m proud to have it. It’s taken us from L.A. to Vancouver three times and Toronto to L.A. two times. We’ve spent a lot of time living in that car. That’s what the car means to me.

Does it have the personality of an actress - does it like the limelight?
No, I don’t think so. If you were to see this car now, it’s covered in dirt. It’s just filthy and I kind of like that. We have two big black Labs and our Labs are in the car constantly and the car is always in a big, giant mess. I would get it cleaned once in a while. But there’s really no point because we clean it and then we put the dogs back in and it turns into a big mess again so we have to go with it.

What’s your driving style like? Do you like to drive fast?
I don’t. I’m actually not a very good driver to be honest with you. I’m a scatterbrain driver. I’m not very focused. I’m always trying to find the right music station or put on a new CD or trying to eat something.

Any speeding or parking tickets?
Parking, especially in Toronto. I feel like I never know where to park and when I do it’s always the wrong spot. Inevitably I always get a ticket. I forget about them and then they add up. It could have been $20, but it doubles and then triples and then I hand them to my accountant at the end of the year and she gets really mad at me.

What was your first car?
....After the Jetta, I leased a Ford Explorer for about six years. And after the Explorer was the Mercedes. I’ve only had three vehicles. I’m sticking with my Mercedes for as long as she’ll go.

Why did you shift from a small car to such big vehicles?
I’d been in L.A. for a long time. I felt safer on the road, I felt higher. Every time I was driving on the L.A. freeway in a small car it was very unnerving for me. One time I rented an SUV and it just changed my whole perspective of driving and I was converted to SUVs from that day on.

What’s your best memory and worst memory on the road?
My best memory would be in the summer driving from Toronto to L.A. It was a really, really cool drive to do. I’ve never driven across the country before. It was a wonderful time. We ended up just sleeping in truck stops and camping out in the back of our car in a sleeping bag with our dogs. It was really great. The worst would be sitting in mind-numbing traffic for hours on end.

What do you listen to on the road?
Right now I really love the Black Dove album and the new Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene -those are my top three that are revolving right now.

Do you rehearse behind the wheel?
Yes, I’m guilty of that - especially during pilot season in L.A. when you have four or five auditions a day. You’re sitting in traffic for so long it’s really the only place you can learn your lines. I think in L.A. every third car you’ll see the same thing. Toronto, it’s a bit different.

If I could bring you the keys to any car what would it be?
Maybe a cool, old Mustang in bright red - the iconic image of the old car driving with the roof down along some stretch of beach somewhere - it’s one of my little dreams.

Loving out loud
by Susan on 22. Jun, 2011

Suetables is about to launch a new on-line look, a better e-commerce friendly web site and a new jewelry line. Currently, we are shooting some video and photography to go with this web site. Through this exciting process, I have had the pleasure and honour to meet talented actress Lauren Lee Smith (The Good Dog, The L Word, CSI Vegas) and her creative photographer husband Eric Steingroever. Their modern loft, filled with antiques, is a true home - with countless photo vignettes, travel souvenirs, beautiful art from friends, an old dictionary, a beautiful collection of books mounted on a brick wall with old wooden crates etc. Their home is modern with vintage elements - ironically not unlike the branding direction that we are going with my jewelry company.

At the end of the day, Erik shared with us one of his published photography books. My boyfriend and I silently looked through this immense book (photo above) to find hundreds of photographs of his beautiful wife - Lauren Lee Smith. He aptly named the book - LOVING OUT LOUD. His ability to see and love his wife’s beauty and many sides (casting directors take note) was impressive - Lauren as a lover, Lauren as fashion model, Lauren as temptress, Lauren as best friend, Lauren as animal lover, Lauren as blond, Lauren as brunette etc. This unabashed declaration from this quiet, interesting, artistic and self-assured man was beautiful. When it came time for Lauren to select some favourite Suetables pieces, it was touching that she asked for a Pheobe 5-chain link bracelet with a Linton charm upon which I stamped LOVING OUT LOUD.

Beyond Belief
Marcy Cornblum

Actress Lauren Lee Smith, star of CTV's The Listener, describes her 3,200-square foot west-end Toronto home as a "concrete jungle", which she fell in love with due to its "one-of-a-kind" qualities. Smith shares her home with her husband Erik and two black labs Ben and Wilbur. Now in season three of CTV's science fiction/drama series The Listener, actor Lauren Lee Smith protrays the strong and smart Sergeant Michelle McCluskey. In her character, McCluskey was hesitant in the beginning to believe in the lead character's (Craig Olejnik) gift of reading minds. Now she is a believer, using his special talent to assist her in fighting crime. Smith admits doing the TV series is pretty intense. "We have 15-17 hour shoots, five days a week with 11-15 pages of dialogue." Yet, she wouldn't change a thing. "There is nothing else I would want to do other than this. I'm very happy with my life. I'm curious to play characters outside of myself and explore the darker aspects of human kind."
....
Smith recently invited Star Spaces into her home.

Q: How would you describe your home in two words?
A: Concrete jungle!

Q: Tell us about your home.
A: My home is a 3,200-square foot loft in the west end of Toronto. It is a converted factory that was built eleven years ago. The original structure of the building was built in 1905 and was used as a fuel and oil distribution depot. It is unique because of the size of the space. The entire space is open. It is all brick with concrete floors, 16-foot ceilings, a fireplace, outdoor patio area and the original elevator. The kitchen is functional with a giant island on wheels. We turned the sunken living room into our master bedroom.

Q: What attracted you to this space?
A: It is truly one-of-a-kind. We moved from a house in Los Angeles that was basically a fish bowl. We wanted to find something very different and this place could in fact not be any more different. We saw this place and were taken by the challenge to turn a dark industrial place into a warm and cozy home. Luckily, my husband is a photographer and he put lights in certain places to make the space bright and comfortable.

Q: Who shares this home?
A: My husband Erik and our two black labs Ben and Wilbur. Ben is a rescue dog. He is very timid and slightly overweight. Wilbur is high-strung and loves chasing anything we see on our walks.

Q: What is your favourite room and why?
A: My closet! My husband turned the bottom portion of the left into a giant walk in closet for me. It looks like my own private store.

Q: How would you describe your decorating style?
A: Canadian meets German meets Environment Furniture (U.S. brand). My husband and I both love photography. We have a lot of his work up as well as our favourite photographers. We both had very extensive book collections before we met...which continues to grow. Our couch is made of old army knapsacks. It is dark green and grey which hides the dog hair. There are a lot of industrial pieces and strange knick knacks we find on our travels. The dogs were curious when we came into the loft with a (man-made) giant stuffed tiger's head. It now inhabits the living area.

Q: What is your fondest memory in the house?
A: Probably the day after we moved in. I was shooting the first season of The Listener and I went to work with all of our boxes still packed everywhere. I was feeling overwhelmed and wondering when and how we would ever get it all unpacked. I came home that night and it was done. I have no idea what my husband did or how he did it. It was such a wonderful surprise.

Q: What's the one item in this house you can't live without?
A: The keys.

Q: Weekends at home, what are we most likely to find you doing?
A: Cooking! I love to cook. During the week I just don't have time. On the Weekends you will find me in the kitchen with the Food Network on making Mexican food, curries or some kind of bread. My bacon wrapped dates are always a crowd pleaser.

Q: If your walls could talk, what would they say?
A: "I can keep a secret, what about you?"

What’s in your bag, Lauren Lee Smith?
By FASHION Staff | June 6th, 2012 | 3:00 pm

We've got a bit of Hollywood on the blog today! In between filming, cross-country flights and press engagements, actresss Lauren Lee Smith popped by our offices today to give us a peek at what's inside her bag. Currently starring as Sgt. Michelle McCluskey on The Listener, Lauren has previously starred on The L Word and in the ultra-steamy film, Lie With Me. So, what does a busy actress need with her every day?

I was walking down Third Street in Los Angeles, and I’d been on the hunt for an orange bag for five months. It had to be this exact, perfect orange. I was walking by and this Rebecca Minkoff bag was on the mannequin and I was like there, that’s my purse. I made them take it down and then it was mine! The scarf was my husband’s and he used to always wear it on his wrist. He wore it when I first met him, so now I’ve taken it. It’s hanging in there by a thread.

I just found these Ilia lipsticks-they’re a Canadian company and they make the most amazing colours ever. This tinted moisturizer is the best stuff in the world. It’s by this company called Arcona; they’re based in Los Angeles and they make the best face products, they’re all natural. I’ve been using this for seven years now… I use it every day. The first makeup artist I ever worked with, probably when I was 14 and modeling I think, that was like my first beauty advice, to always have Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream for nails, hands, face, lips, everything.

I have two black labs, Ben and Wilbur. Wilbur is four and Ben is seven-they’re lovely. Those doggie bags were given to me as a “gift” at work. I was like, oh, maybe this is a sign that I should be taking better care. The wallet is Hobo. I’ve been using their products for about 10 years because they’re so big, so you can fit everything in there, and it doubles as a clutch if needs be. And Rescue Remedy… I use that for stress.

I do steal pens because even though I have an iPad and an iPhone, I still need to write everything down. I’m a little klepto. The iPhone is actually a funny story: three days ago, I was in Palm Desert at Joshua Tree doing a photo shoot, and I had put my phone on the roof of my car. As I realized I had done that it slid off, and then I backed over it, all within five seconds. I got the iPad as a Christmas present from my hubby two years ago. It’s great for travelling. For watching movies, or reading scripts even, it’s perfect.

The Listener's Lauren Lee Smith's peripatetic life
By Martha Perkins - Published: May 23, 2013 12:00 PM

Peripatetic. It’s a lovely word that can add a hint of romance to describe how Lauren Lee Smith seems to spend much of her life hopping from location to location. The Vancouver-based actress spent the winter filming CTV’s The Listener in Toronto. But when the Season 4 premiere was set and shot in Vancouver, she got to fly back home for a few days. “It’s pretty ideal,” she says one early spring morning after shooting a scene in Stanley Park with co-star Craig Olejnik (who’s a partner in Yaletown’s Raw Canvas.)

The previous day was spent chasing Smith’s five-year-old nephew around the Vancouver Art Gallery and catching up with her mother and brother, visiting all their favourite haunts. When there’s enough time, she also makes pitstops at the house she shares with her husband, a director of photography, at Colpitt Lake. (“It’s just so beautiful and isolated there.”) Isn’t it exhausting to spend so much time in so many different places? Doesn’t she wish she could set down more permanent roots? She smiles. “I’m pretty adaptable to a fault,” she says. “I get antsy staying in one place. I always want to be on the move, which drives my husband crazy.”

It’s also the life she grew up with. In her youth, “we were kind of vagabonds. Every year we packed up and moved somewhere.” “Home” - if only for a year - included Costa Rica, France, Korea and all over the US. “We either lived in guarded palatial mansions or one-bedroom hotel rooms. Our childhood was definitely an adventure.” So while she goes through phases where she’d like more stability, “it usually only lasts about six months.”

When shooting the CTV series wraps up, she’ll be able to dedicate more time to Cinemanovel, a feature film she’s starring in and producing with Terry Miles, who calls it “a love letter to cinema.” The two worked together on his previous film, The Night for Dying Tigers (which is available only in the US on Netflix), and their new venture once again features Jennifer Beals as well as Ben Cotton, Gabrielle Rose and Catherine Michaud. Smith plays the estranged daughter of a prominent Canadian filmmaker. After he dies, she goes through his films to create a memorial and discovers that self-destructive patterns can also be inherited.

Season 4 of The Listener premieres on CTV at 10pm on May 29.
