Lauren Lee Smith: The Star of the new "Christy" is a woman of many faces
Tony Bray

Was your work on the "Dark Angel" pilot meant to be a recurring role?
At first it was. But after I did the pilot episode, they weren't sure if it was going to come back or not, so there was a little time in between - a couple of months actually - and during that time I got a couple of other jobs, so I wasn't able to return. Which is unfortunate because it's a great show, but at least I got in there for the pilot episode.

Who were you in the pilot episode?
I played Natalie, who was Sketchy's girlfriend.

Who did you get to work with the most?
Well, I worked with Jessica Alba and Valerie Ray Miller and Richard Gunn and pretty much the whole cast.

It sounds like you watch the show. Is Jessica now more free with her character than in the beginning?
Yes. I think once an actress gets into a part and comfortable with her character, she becomes less inhibited and more likely to take risks, so I think yeah, definitely. The amount of work she has to do - she carries the whole show - I mean it's amazing.

Em Appeal!
by Steven Eramo

Mutant X's new recruit Lauren Lee Smith tells Steven Eramo why she's glad to be playing a girl next door with something x-tra
....
Mutant X is not Smith’s first foray into the world of TV Science Fiction and Fantasy. She also guest-starred on Dark Angel. ‘I played Sketchy’s [Richard Gunn] girlfriend Natalie in the pilot,” says the actress. “The part was originally supposed to be a recurring one. However, after Dark Angel I went on to do the 2gether series, and then I was hired to play the title role in the three part mini-series Christy. So I never did make it back to Dark Angel, but it was neat to have at least done the pilot. None of that cast knew each other and they were all working together for the first time. The star of the show, Jessica Alba [Max], was in all of my scenes. I actually got to shoot a scene with her where we’re at a bar and Natalie comes up to Max and asks where Sketchy is, but they cut it out. That’s show biz!” she laughs.

Dark Angel’s Original Cindy Lives Up to Her Name
by Sarah Warn | June 24, 2003

Dark Angel introduces Original Cindy's sexuality early in the pilot episode with the following exchange between her and Max at work as they're observing their friend Sketchy with his girlfriend:

Original Cindy: Now, why can't I find a girlfriend like that? Brings him lunch everyday…thoughtful, sweet…legs from here to there.
Max: Straight.
Original Cindy: Shame wasting a girl like that on a male.

Later in the same episode, when Sketchy asks Max's help in preventing his girlfriend from finding out he's cheating on her, Original Cindy's sexuality is referenced again:

Max: I actually kind of feel sorry for guys sometimes.
Original Cindy: Please.
Max: They're prisoners of their genes.
Original Cindy: So are dogs. I say hang Sketch out to dry. Let Natalie see him for the heel he is. Then, maybe she'll step to the all-girl team.
Max: Of course, there's nothing self-serving in that scenario.
