ABC adds 'Handbook' to schedule; Network greenlights half-hour comedy

Also Wednesday, Lauren Lee Smith scored the lead in the CBS pilot "Can Openers," while Alina Foley and Ridge Canipe have joined Fox's "Outnumbered."

On the casting front, Smith will play a brain surgeon attempting to balance her work -- the male-dominated world of neurosurgery -- with her personal life, on "Can Openers." Sony Pictures TV produces the pilot presentation. Smith's credits also include the upcoming features "Pathology," "Trick 'r Treat" and "Helen."

Omar Gooding cast in CBS pilot

Omar Gooding has joined the cast of CBS' drama "Can Openers." "Openers," from Sony, stars Lauren Lee Smith as a brain surgeon who fights to survive in the competitive boys club that is the seven-year neurosurgical residency. Gooding (Showtime's "Barbershop") will play Dr. Darryl Childress, a sixth-year resident suffering from burnout. He is repped by Innovative and Michael Fuller.
