Jonghyun jumped up and looked around suddenly, no this wasn’t The Council. Things began to make sense as he stared at the blanket that was bunched up in his lap now. He was still on the couch in the living room where he and Minho were staying. Oh yeah, fucking Onew was there too. He was still dazed when he saw movement to the side and whipped his head towards it, ready to react. Sayu was there. Oh. That’s right, bonded.

She had stopped eating her noodles in mid-slurp, noodles started falling from her mouth back into the bowl. He had fallen asleep before they said anything; Sayu must have put the blanket on him. This stupid fucking bond, she can feel everything, this sucks. He started thinking about how terrible it was going to be when she finally did start asking questions, but it was pretty apparent by that point that he was going to have to talk first. She was talented in patience and in being stubborn.

Jonghyun swung his legs off the couch and turned to face her with his feet on the floor. He noticed she was less nervous, sitting with her legs under her in the chair, hunched over a steaming bowl of broth and carbohydrates. Sayu apparently thought it was okay to start eating again because she lifted up another bunch of noodles with her chopsticks. He laughed through his nose and shook his head.

She stopped with her mouth open and then straightened up, letting the noodles fall. “What? It’s been hours, I got hungry.”

“I’m not judging, it just figures.”

“What figures?”

“That you’d take up vigil for answers.”

“I don’t know what else you were expecting.”

“A normal human to be bonded to.” He felt he hurt her a tiny bit there, but she didn’t show it. Typical. This is never fun if there isn’t some yelling.

She slurped in another cluster of noodles and wiped her mouth with the back of her sleeve. “You know you can be pretty human sometimes.”

He gave her a look, eyebrow raised, so she continued, “For a vampire to get riled up for a human that wasn’t even his-“

“Hey that time was really different and you didn’t even know what was going on. I should have just let you get what was-”

She laughed and talked over him, “And that’s why I considered you my friend. I could do stupid things and you would protect me whether you like to admit it or not.”

“I can ‘act’ human, it’s a learned skill. Just because I liked to role play with you doesn’t make me any less vampire. You’re the dumbass human that let a vampire hang out with you in seedy bars.” He didn’t know why, but he felt like he needed to defend himself. Like he was walking into her palm but he didn’t know where it was.

She mixed the noodles in the broth absentmindedly but he could still feel the lingering whatever that set him on edge. As Sayu lifted the bowl to sip the broth, she spoke when her face was hidden, “Why do I feel like you’re human though? Not quite all vampire.”

Is this a trap? Jonghyun wrinkled his nose like he smelled something terrible. “Yeah sure, playing human is fun sometimes but it’s pretend. Don’t think my sometimes role play with you means in anything. That’s just stupid as hell, I thought you were smart.”

She lowered the bowl with a big grin, “I am smart. Which is why it pisses me off when my friend tries to hide things from me.”

He stared at her, she was mad but not like, a lot, or anything. She was probably talking like that to get him to say something. Wait a fucking minute, “Do you know about fucking everything already?”

She shrugged and looked up at the ceiling like something else caught her attention, “Oh, I know things.” She sighed like she was bored but there was something else going on.

Jonghyun’s stare narrowed, was this a trap or did she really know, that was the question. He couldn’t tell.
