So I've gotten embroiled in an lengthy argument with an acquaintance over "remedy" and "remediate". As of this afternoon, I'm the proud owner of the electronic Van Dale Dutch/English/French/German large dictionary set! Yay! My uni uses these dictionaries and I love them, they are easy to work with and contain lots of extra information and idiomatic expressions. They have about 115.000 lemmas per language, I believe. I've done some Google searching, trying to find a decent, reliable Hindi to English dictionary. All the ones I find are really subpar... the best one I've found offers a dozen different translations for simple words without any indication whatsoever of why or in what context they would be used. I'm getting ready to teach a course on court interpreting that will be language-neutral, and I'm short on recommendations for the following:

• monolingual general dictionaries
• monolingual legal dictionaries
• bilingual general dictionaries
• bilingual legal dictionaries
• grammar books (the more prescriptivist the better)

I think this recent edition of Dinosaur Comics wonderfully sums up why linguistic creativity is awesome and prescriptivism is made of fail.
