Electronic Dictionaries

I'm wondering about your experiences with electronic dictionaries. Are there any language students here who use them for school? I've been checking out the Oxford and Collins versions of their dictionaries for the iPod-Touch, and wanted to ask if they're worth the investment. So, A) does anyone make serious, extensive use of an electronic dictionary (iPod or other)? How do they compare to having the actual book in hand? and B), does anyone use them in class and do teachers seem to mind/have issues with them?

I need a new iPod anyway, so if buying the Touch and dictionary apps can save me from getting these monster 10-pound tomes (I need unabridged German, Spanish, and French), without losing any of the benefits of the physical texts, I'd like to go for it. But I wanted to see if you all had any warnings or advice first.
