DENIAL

Reita woke up. He moved his body and turned around. Reita was surprised when he looked at Aoi that already awake. Reita didn’t know for how long Aoi had been looking at him like that.

“Hey...” Reita said with his still raspy voice.

Aoi greeted him. “Good morn-” Aoi’s words were stopped when he saw Reita that moment. Aoi extended his hand and tried to reach for Reita. Aoi’s movement was stopped when he felt the sore in his body. “A-ah..!”

“Hey, be careful…” Reita said as he moved from his position. Slowly, he held Aoi’s hand. “Does it still hurt?” Reita asked.

Aoi shook his head. “I’m okay…” Aoi said as he smiled a bit.

“What are doing just now?” Reita remembered when Aoi extended his hand earlier.

Aoi looked at Reita. Slowly, he moved his hand and touched Reita’s cheek. “When did you put it off?”

“What?” Reita asked, confused. Aoi answered it by touching Reita’s nose slowly. That was the time Reita realized about his noseband. “Oh, this…” Reita said as he held Aoi’s hand that touched his nose. “Like I told you before, it’s just an accessory. Of course, I didn’t wear it when I sleep…” Reta smiled.

“You said that you’ll take it off as soon as you’re home…”

“Last night was different. Of course I didn’t have the time to think about it, Aoi. You need the attention more than just this stupid noseband…”

The explanation made Aoi feel some warm wind rippled in his heart. Aoi smiled for it. Reita, seeing Aoi's smile, smiled along with him.

“Good morning to you too, Aoi…” Reita answered the greeting that Aoi never managed to finish earlier for he looked at Reita’s face without his noseband.

After both of them awake, Reita walked to his kitchen and prepared breakfast for both of them. Reita disallowed Aoi who intend to help him in the kitchen. Reita didn’t let Aoi do heavy things at all until Aoi was really recovered.

“I just want to help you, Reita. Nothing is too heavy about it..!” Aoi argued.

“You’re so fussy… just sit and be quiet,” Reita said - that made Aoi pouted - from his small kitchen. “Oh, by the way, Aoi…”

“Yes?” Aoi answered as he sat on Reita’s bed. Not long after that, Aoi saw Reita came with a cup in his hand. Reita gave the cup to Aoi. “What’s this?” Aoi took the cup carefully.

“Sorry. I don’t have any black coffee. That’s all I have right now,” Reita explained.

Aoi breathe in the aroma from the soupy chocolate liquid inside the cup. “A coffee-mix?” Aoi guessed.

Reita shook his head as he chuckled. He didn’t expect that Aoi could guess it that easily. “Coffee fanatic…” Reita said as he walked back to his kitchen.

“Hei! That’s an insult!” Aoi protested.

In his kitchen, Reita still laughed. “At least, now you can yell that loud. It means that you’re alright now.”
Reita didn’t spend too much time in his kitchen. He was just warming the milk and took two bowls. Reita pour the warm milk into those two bowls after he filled the bowls with cereal. Reita brought the bowls back to where Aoi was waiting for him.

“I hope you don’t mind with cereal. This is all I-” Reita words were stopped when Aoi held his hand and took the bowl from Reita’s hand.

“It’s more than enough, Reita. Thank you very much…” Aoi said with a smile.

“Ow… ok…” Reita smiled too. “Oh, you don’t have to worry about today’s class. I’ll write everything for you,” Reita said before he ate his cereal.

“You can’t do that,” Aoi said. “I have to go to campus today, Reita. I-ouch!” Aoi yelled when Reita touched the wound on his forehead. “It hurts! What do you think are you doing, Reita!?”

“You still thinking of going to campus with that condition?” Reita asked. Aoi just lowered his gaze. “I would love to help you going anywhere you want, Aoi. But I don’t think you can bare all the pain along our classes today.”

“But I-”

“And do you think you can meet with Tora today? Look at your current condition, Aoi. I’m not sure Tora can understand it.” Reita looked at Aoi who’s still looking down at his own bowl. Reita took a deep breath and exhaled it slowly. Reita took the bowl from Aoi’s hand and put it - with his own bowl too - on the small table near the bed. Reita then sat beside Aoi on his bed. “Take a rest for today, will you? Don’t you ever think that I have the heart to let and see you walk from here, to our campus, around our campus, and get back home in this condition…”

“I-”

“Stop arguing.”

At last, Aoi nodded.

Reita smiled. He really doesn’t want Aoi to push himself too hard. At least for today. If Aoi willing to take a rest this whole day, tomorrow, maybe he can go back to campus in much better state.

*

After Aoi agreed to stay at Reita’s apartment until Reita got back home, Reita went to the campus. He walked through the campus yard and saw Uruha not far in front of him. Just when Reita wanted to catch up with the blonde, someone else distracted Reita’s attention. Reita slow his pace down and looked at that person at the parking lot.

That person was just parked his motorbike and opened his helmet. It’s Tora’s cousin, Kai.

Reita kept staring at Kai. The guy then walked leaving his motorbike. Kai was playing with something in his hand. Something like his motorbike key if Reita was not mistaken. It’s pretty far from Reita position he couldn’t focus his sight to the small thing. Well, it’s not that thing matters anyway. Reita himself didn’t really know why he could be distracted that much to that person. Reita kept looking at Kai, even when the key in Kai’s hand slipped and fell. Kai bowed to pick up the key.

“Hm..?” Something had bugging in his mind since he saw it. But Reita still couldn’t make sure about what was exactly that bugging him.

Reita was still observing Kai. That time Kai was walking to the cafeteria. Kai’s step was almost tripped after he stepped on his untied shoelace.

Uruha, who at last realized about Reita’s existence, walked approached Reita. “Oi, Reita!” Uruha greeted him with a pat on Reita’s shoulder. Reita didn’t heed at it. “Hey, what are you looking at?” Uruha asked as he looked to the same direction as Reita’s gaze. Uruha found Kai who’s kneeling and tying his shoelace. “Oh, so you’re looking at Tora’s cousin… hey, don’t tell me you have a crush on Tora’s cousin?”

“Hell I did…” Reita said without taking his eyes off of Kai.

“Hey, easy dude, I’m just joking. What’s wrong with you?” Uruha didn’t expect Reita would say such words to him.

“I really ever saw him somewhere…”

“Oh, no… here we go again…” Uruha patted his forehead. “Maybe it’s just your imagination, Reita. Never mind it. The class will start soon.”

“No, it’s not my imagination playing on me. I really did see him…”

Reita still won’t take his eyes off of Kai who already stood and took his cellphone from his pocket. He’s reading something on his cellphone. It looked like someone was sending him an email.

No.

Reita shocked. He remembered everything. The way Kai bowed to pick something up, the way Kai tying his shoelace, and the way Kai using his cellphone were the exactly same things Reita saw at every place he went with Aoi last Sunday.

Uruha was getting impatient. He nudged Reita and said, “Come on. Are you going to watch him for the rest of your life?”

“I already know…” Reita said angrily.

“Eh? About what?” Uruha asked, not knowing what Reita meant.

“I remembered where I saw him.”

Without giving too much interest, Uruha rolled his eyes. “Good then. OK. Can we go now? I don’t wanna be late, Rei.”

Reita fell silent. He was still watching Kai until the guy entered the cafeteria. After that, Reita nodded. “Yeah… OK…” Reita said in a low voice. He then walked beside Uruha to their class.

In his class, when the class started, Reita’s concentration was not in that class at all. His mind fixed only to Aoi. Well, actually, Kai was the person that Reita could think of that day. But, after all, his thought would always return to Aoi.

Kai was following them. Kai was following them everywhere they went last Sunday. Kai. That moment, Reita realized why Tora knew about the whole thing, about Aoi, about them on that Sunday. Reita realized that Kai was the one who informed Tora about all of it. Tora knew about it, and he punished Aoi for it. Tora didn’t like it when he knew Aoi went with other guy, right? None of them told Tora about this. No one would. But if Tora still could find out about it, then it must be Tora knew it from other person, and the person… was… Kai. Definitely.

His emotion suddenly boiled up inside his heart. Reita really wanted to beat Kai up. But if Reita frantically do that, Kai would absolutely report it to Tora. Tora would also certainly do something about it. Reita won’t mind it if he had to face Tora afterward. Reita already wanted to chasten Tora about this, since he knew that Tora like to hurt Aoi. But one thing that made Reita hesitated was Aoi. Tora positively won’t leave Aoi out of this problem. Tora would probably hurt Aoi again.

He might think Aoi was the one who asked Reita to teach Kai some lesson for being too interfering. Or, what if Tora think about other thing. Aoi was wounded, and Reita beat Kai up because of it. For that, Tora might think that Aoi and Reita had some relationship. Any probabilities would lead Tora to hurt Aoi again. Reita sighed.

Suddenly, Reita was stunned by his own thought. What made him so mad at Kai? Was it only because Kai followed him and Aoi? Was it only because Kai was the only person that had the probability to informed Tora about this? Was it only because Tora hurt Aoi? Why he got so angry after he saw Aoi’s condition last night? Was it only because he didn’t like it when someone had been treaten haphazardly or was it because…

Or was it because…

Reita remembered when he kissed Aoi that was already fallen asleep last night.

Reita immediately ruffled his hair to make him forget about his stupid action. What made him so dare to do that? Kissed Aoi? Kissed Tora’s lover? That could be a big trouble if Tora founds out about that. Again, he’s not the only victim in this case, but Aoi could get hurt too. Tora shouldn’t know about this.

That day, in the end, Reita decided to do nothing to Kai. At least, for that day, that’s what Reita had in his mind. He would also hide his intention toward Kai from Aoi. There were already too much things that Aoi got through. Reita didn’t want to add more burdens to the Beautiful Being…

The Beautiful Being…

Reita was already forgotten for how long he never used that name again…

*

Meanwhile, in Reita’s apartment, Aoi just ate his lunch. He put his empty bowl on the small table beside the bed. Aoi then looked at his sling bag. Slowly, Aoi opened his sling bag and took his black cellphone, Ogre.

Aoi took a deep breath and exhaled it slowly. He was in dilemma. Part of him wanted to turn his cellphone on, but part of him wanted to let it non-active like its current state.

Tora could possibly contact him. Or maybe Kai send him an email. Nonetheless, whoever contacted him; no one would make Aoi felt a little bit calmer. In the other side, if Tora couldn’t contact his cellphone, Tora would probably get even angrier. Aoi knew that he couldn’t avoid Tora forever.

In the end, Aoi pressed one button on his cellphone to turn Ogre on. Aoi’s heart beat frantically. He bit his lower lip and waited. Aoi was really surprised when he heard his cellphone ringed non-stopped for few minutes.

Then the rings stopped. Aoi looked at his cellphone with full of fear. Slowly, he checked the whole notifications he got that day.

Twelve unanswered calls, twelve messages in his mailbox, and so many emails. It might more than twenty emails he received considering the notification ringed that long.

All the unanswered calls were from Tora. Of course the messages in his mailbox were also from Tora. Then, from all the emails he got, only few of it was from Kai, the rest of it was from Tora.

“Where are you, Love?” and then, “Can I see you now?” and then, “I’m in front of your apartment. Open the door, Honey…” were the emails Tora sent to him.

“Tora is looking for you…” and then, “Where are you? I’ll pick you up…” and then, “Aoi, Tora is desperately need to see you…” were the emails he got from Kai.

Aoi bit his lip again. He sighed. Aoi then closed his emails folder and checked for his mailbox. “Dear, call me back...” and then, “After you get this message, call me, Aoi...” and then, “Is your cellphone battery out, Love?” were the mailbox messages that Aoi listened from his mailbox.

From those emails and messages, Aoi didn’t find any ‘sorry’ word. Not even one. Aoi exhaled slowly. He lowered his head, and again, his tear dropped. Aoi wipe his tear right away. At least, Tora was still looking for him. Tora even went to his apartment to search for him. From his tone, Aoi didn’t hear any anger in Tora’s voice.

“I have to go home…” Aoi said to himself.

Aoi looked at the small clock on his cellphone screen. It was already 13.30. If Aoi leave Reita’s apartment now, at least, he could reach his own apartment at two.

“I have to go home…” Aoi repeated as he stood from Reita’s bed.

*

It was already 14.30 that time. Reita entered his apartment building with a box in his hand. Inside the box was a cake that he bought for Aoi. As usual, Reita walked toward the elevator to reach the third floor. But then, someone called him.

“Suzuki-kun!” called some middle-aged man in a neat suit.

Reita turned around. He saw the middle-aged who called him. It was the officer in the apartment. “Yes, Yasunori-san?” Reita answered.

The middle-aged man then approached Reita and gave Reita his apartment key. “A young man asked me to give your key to you…” he said with a smile.

Reita looked at the key. Yes, it’s his key. Of course he memorized his key and the key chain very well. Reita was so confused when he saw the key on his hand. “W-who gave this to you, Yasunori-san?” Reita asked suspiciously, as he already knew the answer of his own question.

“A young man with few bruises on his body. He-”

“Where is he now!?” Reita yelled when he grabbed the middle-aged man’s shoulder.

The middle-aged man was surprised at Reita’s gesture. “I-I don’t know, Son… he’s also asked me to give this to you…” said the middle-aged man as he took some neatly folded paper from his shirt pocket.

Reita become very impatient. He snatched the folded paper from the officer’s hand. He opened the paper and read it.

Reita, I’m sorry. I’m going home without telling you first. I wanted to call you but my white cellphone’s battery was already out. I really have to go home as soon as possible. Tora was worried about me and I don’t want make things worse…

Thank you for treating my wounds, Reita. I’m glad that I have a friend like you. I promise; I’ll pay all the costs I made since I came to your apartment last night. Oh, I think I’m going to give you another problem… I can’t find my shirt. The buttonless shirt…lol Can you please bring it one day, when I’m able to contact you again? The shirt shouldn’t be your burden, Reita…:)

Again, thank you very much, Reita. I’ll always remember your kindness. I’m sorry for being so troublesome. I’ll call you after all my problem with Tora’s over.

Aoi

Reita rumpled the paper. He gnashed his teeth lividly. His hand was shaking. Reita felt his chest was so hot, like something was boiled inside his heart. Suddenly, Reita felt very dizzy. The dizziness was just momentarily, but it was annoying enough for Reita.

“Suzuki-kun..?”

The officer’s call made Reita could ease his anger a bit. Reita nodded a little and said, “Thank you very much, Yasunori-san. I’m very sorry for bothering you like this.”

“No, of course not, Son.” The officer smiled. “Oh!” The officer then said something that made Reita fell silent. “Tell the young man… he’s a friend of yours, right? Tell him to keep away from anyone who could give those wounds…”

*

Reita entered his room. He sat on the floor and lean on his bed. Reita bended both of his knees and rested both of his elbow on each of his knees. His gaze was straight to the thing in front of him, to the cake inside the box that he bought for Aoi, only for Aoi. There was no use in buying the cake after all. It would take a long time until he could see Aoi again. Fine. Perhaps, Reita could still see Aoi in the campus. But when that time comes, Aoi would already be under Tora’s supervision. And Kai would always be there to make sure that no one, repeat: NO ONE could go near Aoi when Tora’s not around. Everything would never be the same again. It won’t be that unimpeded to talk to Aoi, moreover to give the cake to him.

Reita clenched his fist and hit his room floor hard. The sound of the hit might heard until the room below Reita’s room. Reita didn’t care about it. He just wanted to let his anger out. He was angry, angry, angry, without knowing why.

…Tora was worried about me…

“It’s bullshit!” Reita yelled as he took something, anything, beside him and throw it to his front door. It was an iodine bottle - that he used to treat Aoi’s wound last night - that he throw. A loud thud sound could be heard from the bump of the bottle and his door.

…I’m glad that I have a friend like you…

“Bullshit,” Reita said as he casted down his eyes.

…I’ll call you after all my problem with Tora’s over…

“Bullshit…” Reita’s voice was getting fainter. Reita hid his face with both of his hand. His shoulders were shaking. He felt so dejected, so very dejected it made Reita stood from his position and walked to the cake box. He raised his fist high and aimed it fast to the box.

But… Reita stopped his fist, right on top of the box. Reita stopped himself from crushing the cake. He pulled his fist back and loosened his grip. Reita shook his head slowly.

“This cake can be for anyone…” Reita said slowly. “Uruha and Saga won’t resist it… or… maybe I can bring it to Sumire… they will surely glad to receive this…”

Reita then stood; leave the cake for changing his clothes. Reita prepared himself to go to Sumire. Reita kept thinking that his job in Sumire probably could make him forgot about his anger; the anger that Reita still couldn’t find the reason why…
