INNOCENT
(Reita’s POV)
Aoi. That name lingered in my mind since yesterday, since Uruha told me about it. Same class with me? I guess I have to pay more attention to my surroundings. Well, Uruha said that I should have known him since last year. That’s why…
*
And now, here I am, standing in front of my earlier class, holding my head like it’s going to fall off.
Crap. Where did I put that Pesky-Book! I had to opened my bag until three times and unload all things inside it to make sure that THAT Pesky-Book really doesn’t exist inside my bag.
I’m still holding my head. I tried to memorize where I put the Pesky-Book yesterday. Yes, yesterday. I remember it all very well that yesterday was the last time I held the Pesky-Book. I didn’t touch it after I got home to my apartment last night. I didn’t take it out from my bag. Well, that is IF I DID put the Pesky-Book into my bag.
Geez… I need THAT Pesky-Book for my next Pesky-Class! If THAT Pesky-Lecturer knew I don’t have his oh-so-famous-Pesky-Book while I’m attending his class, he’ll definitely kick me out from the class. My name will be smeared forever. After that, I have to pour my whole body and soul to grab that Pesky-Lecturer attention again, so I don’t have to see big “D” on my report and I have to repeat his class again next year!
For short: I’m dead…
Aaargh!! Damn it! It’s over now. Where can I borrow that Pesky-Book!? All the students must use it. Moreover, there will be no student who wants to skip his class. I forgot how that Pesky-Lecturer threatened us so that no one will absent - even for just one time - his class.
Oh, God…
“Anoo…” called someone behind me.
Hey, I think I know that voice’s owner. But who could it be…
I turned and I saw: The Beautiful Being!? Oh, yeah… that was the voice that I heard in the bathroom yesterday. It was when talked on the cellphone.
But I’m not sure that he really is talking to me. I looked at my surroundings, wondering whether there was someone he talked to.
“You…” he said while he pointing at me.
“Eh? Me?” I asked; surprised. Disbelievingly, I pointed at myself. He nodded and smiled. Oh, God; that smile. Now I know why this person was THAT famous. “W-why me?” I asked, confused.
“You’re Reita, right?”
He knew my name. “Yes, that’s me. What is it?”
“Mm…” He hummed when he took something from his sling bag that hanged down from his left shoulder. He handed something to me. “This… is yours, right?”
“Pesky-Book!” I shouted cheerfully and I snatched that book from him. He looked surprised; I didn’t know whether it was because my words or my sudden action. “Oh, sorry. I thought I already lost this book. And, that’s how I called this book…” I scratched my not-itchy-head.
He’s covering his mouth with his right hand when he’s laughing. Oh, my. His smile only could make him so attractive already. Now, his gesture makes him look more… more… adorable?
“I know that,” he said when he succeed in stopping his laughter. “I saw THAT name written under your name inside the book…”
Ah, that’s how he knew my name? That means, when I saw him looking at me yesterday, when Uruha pulled me away from the bathroom, it was not my imagination?
Hey, wait a minute. How did he know that Reita is me?
“Where did you find this book?”
“It was left in your desk drawer yesterday. I took it and tried to give it back to you. But you’re already gone…”
Oh, now I remember. Yesterday, I put the Pesky-Book in my desk drawer. When the class was over, I felt like I’ve already put all my books inside my bag. I just left the class without knowing that the Pesky-book wasn’t in my bag yet.
“Thanks,” I said, smiling, and waving the book.
“You’re welcome.” He smiled again. Oh, have I tell you about the piercing? Yeah, he has that piercing on his lower lip’s. It made him look… captivating? “I know how it feels live the life without that… pesky book…” We laughed at that sentence. “Oh, hey. You want to go to the class? The class will start soon, right?”
“Ow? Mm... OK...” I smiled. Again, he showed me his smile. It reminded me of something. “Oh… mm… you’re… Aoi, right?”
“Oh, sorry!” He smiled sheepishly. “I’m Aoi. Shiroyama Aoi.”
“Suzuki Reita.” We shook hand.
“I know,” he said. And we laughed together again.
So, we walked to the next class, the Pesky-Class. Well, I kind of liked that name now. But…
What’s this? Why suddenly I felt there’re so much pairs of eyes who looking at us? Was it… because… the person who walked beside me?
...When everybody talks about him and starting to make so much plan, from the most despicable one to the most idiot one, to make him break up with his lover, to possess him after that... you said that you’ve just see him today?”...
Uruha’s words ringed back in my head. He’s right: this Beautiful Being called Aoi is really THAT famous. From the looks of the people who look at us right now, I can conclude two things: they have a really big desire to this Beautiful Being, and they have a really big hatred toward me. Just by looking at them I can hear them yelling at me, “Stay away from him, you eyesore!”
It’s just few steps more until we reach our next class’ door. There, I saw Uruha standing in front of the said door with few other students. Uruha turned around and walked away from that door. When he spotted us, he surprised when he saw me, uh, I mean us.
“Wow… Reita… You move fast,” he asked while he looking at the Beautiful Being. Aoi just nodded his head and smiled politely to Uruha.
“What do you mean?” I asked, confused.
“Oh, never mind,” he said with a chuckle. “Say, what are you guys doing here anyway?”
What kind of stupid question is that!? “Of course we’re here for the next class, Mr. Know-it-all-Uruha!”
“Nah. Don’t waste your time. Just go home!” Uruha said when he walked pass through us and waving his hand to us, without looking at us.
Confused, Aoi and I are looking into each other. That was suspicious. Then we walked to the class’ door, where Uruha stood earlier. Looks like Uruha just read something there.
There’s a paper stick to the door. It said: There’s no class for today. After reading what’s written on that paper, I spontaneously raised my fist to the air and shouted, “Great!” Then, I heard a chuckled from my side. I looked to him and he covered his sweet laughter with his right hand again. “Oh, sorry…” Again, I scratched my not-itchy-head awkwardly.
“No, really…” he said between his laughter. He patted my arm softly. “You’re not the only one who would feel happy for this…”
He’s right. I don’t know if there any student who can enjoy that Pesky-Class. I grinned. But my smile vanished when I saw him looking at his watch.
“You have an appointment?” I asked.
He looked at me and smiled. This time, it’s not the bright smile like I saw earlier. He shook his head.
“Or… are you waiting for something?”
“Tora…” he answered, in a small voice.
“What..?” I don’t understand.
He sensed my confusion. “Oh, he’s… mm…” He lowered his gaze doubtfully. In return, I could sense nervousness on his face. “He’s my… you know? Mm…”
Oh, the Snappish-Faced-Guy from yesterday? “Lover?” I asked. He looked surprised. “Don’t worry. I don’t find it weird about being couple with someone who has the same gender with you…” I smiled. He looked relieved. He lowered his gaze again and nodded. “So, you have an appointment with him after this class?” I asked, pointing at the paper that sticks to the class’ door.
“Kind of…” he said, still in a small voice when he walked away slowly from the door.
I followed him. That means, he has to wait until his appointment later. I don’t know why, suddenly, I don’t want to let him do that boring-activity-called-waiting alone. Then, that idea just popped in my head.
“Want to go to the cafeteria?” I asked. He looked at me, again, surprised. “It’s my treat. For this,” I said. Smiling, I waved my Pesky-Book that he returned to me.
He looked at the book before returning his gaze to me. I felt so happy when I could see his bright sweet smile returned to his face. I felt happier when he nodded, accepting my invitation.
*
I had my cola again while he had a black coffee. Black coffee? I didn’t expect that he’ll choose that serious beverage.
We sat face-to-face. I chose the table that close to the cafeteria’s window. From there, we could see almost everything that happened outside the cafeteria. There’s a silence between us for a moment. He looked so dreamy while looking out the window. The waiting seems disturbing him very much. I think I can make him forget about it for awhile.
What was I wanted to asked him earlier? Oh, yeah…
“Hey, how do you know that I’m Reita?” I asked.
“Hm?” was his only respond when - at last - he looked at me. I think he was daydreaming when I asked him. “Sorry?” Yes, he was in his reverie.
I repeated my question. “How did you know that I’m the one called Reita?”
“Oh, mm… isn’t it obvious?”
“Obvious? What do you mean?” I don’t understand. Then he made a gesture that represented my noseband. “Oh! This?” I rubbed the clothe that wrapping my nose. “So, I’m easily recognized for this thing?”
“You’re the only one who wears that thing…” He said with a smile. “What did you use it?”
“Does it look weird?” Really, I need this person’s opinion. I don’t know why, I just need it.
He shook his head. “For me? No. It’s not weird. But it IS really unique.”
Is that a compliment? “Really?” I smiled. “I don’t know. I wear it because I like it. Then I get used to it. That’s why I rarely took it off…”
“Really?” He was amused. “What about when you sleep?”
“I took it off, of course,” I smiled. “It’s just like an accessory…” With a chuckle, he nodded at that. Then, my curiosity surfaced. “Hey… mm… I’m sorry for asking you this…” I said carefully. “Yesterday, if I’m not mistaken, I saw you in the bathroom…” He looked surprised for my words. He lowered his gaze again. He shifted on his chair uncomfortably. Oh, crap. I think I made a mistake by mentioning that thing. “Oh, I’m sorry. I-”
“It’s okay…” he said. I was confused when he showed me his right cheek. “Is it still visible?”
“What..?”
“Can you see some mark here?” He asked, pointing at his cheek.
“No. Why?”
He leaned back to his chair and sigh a relieved breath. “I thought the mark was still there…”
“What mark?”
He looked at me before lowered his gaze again and shook his head. Oh, look what I’ve done. I’ve made him depressed-
“You heard it, didn’t you?” he asked and looked at me.
“W-what..?”
“My conversation with Tora yesterday?”
I see. So the phone really WAS from Tora, the snappish-faced-guy, his lover. “I’m… sorry… I didn’t mean to overhear-“
“I don’t even know why I fled to the bathroom…”
“Fled?” I asked in disbelieve.
“Fled from him… from Tora…” He looked away from me, out of the window.
“Fled from your lover? But… what for?”
“I don’t want him to slap-” His words were cut off with a gasp when he looked at something outside the cafeteria from the window beside us.
I turned and looked at the same direction. There, I saw him, the snappish-faced-guy, his lover, Tora, walking to this cafeteria’s entrance.
“I’m sorry…” The Beautiful Being hurriedly took his sling bag and got up from his chair. It’s just a few steps when he left me, he stopped and turned around. “Thank you for the treat…” After that, he ran out from this cafeteria and meet with the snappish-face-guy.
I stare at them. They’re talking about something. Aoi’s expression didn’t look too bright. The snappish-faced guy too didn’t look happy. In a split second, I saw Aoi’s pointing at me and the snappish-faced guy looked at me too. I could only nod a little, just to be polite.
He didn’t respond it. The snappish-faced guy didn’t do anything aside from grabbed Aoi’s arm roughly. I knew it form Aoi’s expression. Then, he walked away, and pulled Aoi rudely.
There’s something wrong here…
*
(Aoi’s POV)...
He pulled me roughly. I knew where we would take me. I didn’t resist. I couldn’t. I’m too scared to do it. If I fought back, he would threat me ruder than this. We kept walking like that until we reach the place where Tora parked his car.
Stopped beside that hearse-looking black car, Tora opened the passenger door for me. He didn’t have to ask me to make me got into his car. After I got in, Tora closed the door from the outside. He walked fast to the other side of this car and opened the driver’s door. He got in, and I waited with both of my eyes closed. I know what he would do after all the doors were closed and locked.
He pulled me and kissed me. He crashed his lips onto mine and bit my lower lip pretty hard. I’m glad it didn’t bleed. I didn’t feel any intimacy in our kiss. It was more like a sexual harassment. I guess.
He let me go. I lean my back to the passenger seat. Suddenly, the seat didn’t feel comfortable anymore. It never felt comfortable anyway. I just looked down.
“Reita,” he started the conversation. “You never told me about him.”
“We’ve just met today…”
“Oh, really?” Tora asked. I could sense some distrust in his voice. “Why did you have to meet him in the first place?”
“I just wanted to return his book…” I answered.
He laughed at me. “You introduced yourself to him so you can return his book? Tell me…” Tora closed the distance between us. He caressed my hair. “Is it me who going nuts or you are the one who can’t think anymore, Dear? What kind of stupid reason is that?”
“It’s just a formality, Tora. I returned his book and I guess he needed to know my name just to be polite it he wanted to thanked me. That’s all. We’re in the same class anyway.”
“You borrowed his book without knowing his name?” Tora started to grab my hair. I closed my eyes. In a situation like this, if I give the wrong answer, he would definitely pull my hair rudely.
“I didn’t borrow it, Tora,” I held back my tears. “He left his book and I accidentally found it…”
“Where?”
“In the class…” Tora loosen his grip and let me go. I rubbed my hair where he grabbed earlier.
“But I think you don’t have to go with him to the cafeteria. Just the two of you.”
“Reita was just-” I stopped my words when Tora held my chin roughly.
“Don’t ever mention his name when you’re with me,” Tora said with gritted teeth.
I nodded in panic. “H-he was…” I lowered my voice. I didn’t want Tora to hear my trembling voice. He wouldn’t like it. “He was just wanted to say thank you…”
“Was that really important!?” Tora let go off me.
I lowered my gaze again. “D-don’t ask me, Tora…”
“Couldn’t you just reject it?”
“I just wanted to be polite… that’s all…”
“Then why didn’t you tell me that you went to the cafeteria with him?”
“I forgot…”
“Nice…” Tora said, mockingly. “Then what the use of the cellphone I gave you if you always acted like this?”
“I… I’m sorry…”
“So, why you didn’t attend your class today?” Tora asked. Yes, Tora remembered my ENTIRE schedule.
“There’s no class for today…”
“And you didn’t even tell me about that?”
“I-”
“Forgot!?” His voice rose.
“But you have class too today, right?” I tried to defend myself.
“It’s NOT something you could use as a reason for not telling me, Aoi. Moreover, there is no class that more important than you.”
I could only look at my hands on my lap. “I’m… really sorry…”
“Is that all you can do? Apologize and apologize again?”
Tora started the car. I’m dead.
“I thought that you’re already knew what you should do and what you shouldn’t…” He moved the gear handle and stepped on the gas pedal. “But I guess I have to teach you more, Aoi…”
The car moved and my heartbeat became frantic. I really wanted to cry. But I know Tora wouldn’t like it. I held back my tears as hard as I could. I could cry as much as I want when I’m in his apartment…
Right after he teaches me a lesson.
In the trip to his apartment, there’s one thing that still lingered in my head: how did Tora knew that I didn’t attend my class this morning? How did he know that I was in the cafeteria? There must be someone who told him about all of these. But… who?
***+++…___...___...+++***
Tora has someone who helped him in knowing all the information about Aoi. Who is that person? I’ll reveal the new character soon. But I can’t promise I’ll reveal it in the next chapter. ^^
