Chapter 1: Beauty Chapter 2: Innocent Chapter 3: View BLAME
That morning, the lecturer entered Reita’s class with his old-slow step. Reita looked at the clock on the wall, right above the board behind the lecturer’s table. It’s already nine, and The Beautiful Being hadn’t arrived yet. Aoi was never late. As far as Reita know, The Beautiful Being always arrived on time. Aoi even always arrived before Reita did.
The lecturer started to speak. “Good morning. Now we-”
“Excuse me, Sir!” Someone called suddenly. The lecturer, Reita, and all the students inside the class looked at the class’s front door. Aoi was standing there, he was panting. “I’m… I’m really sorry, Sir. But… may I-”
“Come in,” said the lecturer, cutting Aoi’s words.
“Thank you very much, Sir,” Aoi said as he entered the class. Aoi looked at Reita and the empty chair beside Reita. Aoi didn’t think. He just took the sit beside Reita. Aoi opened his sling bag and took out the entire book he needed for the class. He didn’t say anything.
Reita, who found that it was weird for the Beautiful Being to arrive late like this, took a sheet of paper and started writing. Finished with it, Reita moved the paper to Aoi, and gave a silent code for Aoi to read it.
“You didn’t come with Tora today?” was Reita’s question on the paper.
Aoi wrote, “No…” and pushed the paper back to Reita.
“He didn’t have any class today?” Reita asked again.
“No,” answered Aoi shortly.
“Was it the reason why you arrive late today?”
“I guess so.”
“You never arrived late, whether you came here with Tora or not.” After Reita gave the paper to Aoi, he realized for his own words. How did he get those words? Before he saw Aoi few days ago, Reita never paid any attention him. He didn’t even know that Aoi exist in his campus in the first place. He just tried to find the words that won’t offend The Beautiful Being.
“I guess I spent too much time with him. Maybe that’s why I forgot the train’s schedule.”
Reita read Aoi’s answer. Again, Reita replied, “But didn’t Tora would always take you to campus even he didn’t have any class?”
It took long enough for Aoi to read Reita’s reply. He took his pen, but he didn’t write anything. Reita heard the lecturer explained something. But Reita didn’t have any interest to the lesson at the moment. He just waited, waited until he could read anything that Aoi would wrote on that paper.
Reita took a glance to Aoi. Aoi wrote something. His hand moved very slowly. Reita waited. Not long after that, Aoi pushed he paper back to Reita.
“He sent me an email… he said… he couldn’t take me to campus today…”
Reita immediately remembered about Uruha’s words about Aoi and Tora lived together. Reita intended to ask that but he chose to ask it carefully.
“He has some errand with his family?” Reita asked.
Same as before, Aoi took awhile to read Reita’s reply. He took his pen, but didn’t write anything. He just tapped his pen slowly on the paper before - at last - he wrote:
“Not with his family.”
Reita was surprised when he read the words. Again, Reita remembered when yesterday, he and Uruha saw Tora with the blonde at the mall. But before Reita had the opportunity to write a reply, Aoi took the paper again and wrote something. After Aoi pushed the paper back to Reita, he just leaned his elbow on the table and leaned his chin on his hand. From that gesture, Reita realized that Aoi didn’t want to continue the paper-conversation.
Reita read Aoi’s reply, “We can continue this at the cafeteria, later, after this class.”
Reita folded the paper and put the paper in his pocket. That moment, the lesson was already not interesting anymore for Reita. Suddenly Reita just felt very bored with the class. He waited until he could get to the cafeteria and listened to what Aoi would say to him.
Reita desperately want to hear it, but he still didn’t know why he wants it.
*
Three hours later, Reita and Aoi sat face to face on the same table like the last time they were in the cafeteria. Aoi didn’t speak; he didn’t touch the black coffee he ordered. He just sat there.
The situation became very awkward. Aoi looked like he wanted to say something. In Reita’s opinion, Aoi just didn’t know how to start it. Reita then took the initiative to start the conversation.
“Mm… is there anything you want to say, Aoi?”
“The errand he had… it wasn’t with his family…” Aoi said suddenly.
“Eh..!?” Reita was surprised.
Aoi tilted his head and looked at Reita. “You asked about the errand Tora had today, right?” Aoi shook his head. “It’s been awhile since the last time he visited his parents… Tora just not the person who missed his family that much…”
“Then..?” Reita felt very curious. He didn’t realize the surge inside him had grown stronger than before.
“I don’t know…” Aoi said as he covered his ear, as if he didn’t want to hear anything. “Tora didn’t say anything, and it made me think about something. I don’t want to believe it, but my heart said the opposite…”
“About?”
“I don’t know whether I had the right to say this to you or not, Rei…” Aoi said when he lowered both of his hands and looked at Reita.
“Was it about something that has to do with…” Reita pointed at his own forehead; then he pointed at Aoi.
Aoi touched his own forehead carefully. “Oh, this…” Aoi showed his bitter smile. “No… this has nothing to do with Tora today. But, if Tora finds out about me, talking to you again today, I guess… he will add more of this…”
“Add more of… that? What do you mean?” Reita was getting more and more curious.
Slowly, Aoi pulled his bangs and held in on his head. Reita was surprised when he saw what was hidden behind the bangs. It was three centimeters length of a mad-red-line. It was clearly shown on Aoi’s forehead.
“Wh-what did Tora do to you!?”
Aoi let his bangs fell off again upon his forehead and covering his scar. “Nothing,” he said, smiling. “The scar will soon become invisible.”
“Yeah… the scar will; but not the pain, Aoi…” Reita still shuddered for the wound he saw before.
“Well, Tora won’t give a damn about it…” Aoi said when he saw outside the window of the cafeteria.
“Don’t tell me… when the first time I saw you in the restroom… when you’re holding your cheek… that was also-”
“He slapped me…”
“What..!?” Reita’s voice was chocked. “But why must he do that?”
“It was just a misunderstanding. I was mistakenly sent an email to Tora… it wasn’t for him actually. And it was just about meeting for the class’ assignment. Well, it’s my mistake though. I didn’t mention it clearly. That made Tora thought that I had an affair with the email recipient. He said that I’m such a whore… and… it happened…”
“But he didn’t suppose to do that! He’s… mad…” Reita said with a low voice. “He’s really mad, Aoi…”
“I know…”
“Don’t you want him to change?”
“I forgot how many times I’ve said that to Tora, Rei. I always wanted him to change. Well, he did change. But it was temporarily. When his emotion got him again, he would go back to his nature: harsh and rude. When that happened, nothing I could do to stop him…”
“He can’t treat you like that, Aoi. He himself not a loyal person…”
“What do you mean?” Aoi asked.
“Yesterday… I…” Reita hesitated. “I saw Tora… with someone else… he was blonde-”
“What!?” Aoi didn’t believe with what Reita had just said.
“W-wait, Aoi… maybe they’re just friend and-”
“They’re not.”
“What..?”
“The blonde… he’s not very tall, wasn’t he?”
“Y-yeah… how did you knew that?”
“Where did you saw them?”
“At the mall…” Reita answered with a low voice again. “At some restaurant…”
“What time was that?”
“About… five pm…”
“Hm… I see…” Aoi lowered his gaze. “It was Ruki. Tora ex-lover…”
“Eh!?” Reita was shocked. “Tora’s ex-lover?”
“Yes…” Aoi looked away. He didn’t want Reita to see his watery eyes.
Then again, Reita could still see it. “Aoi…”
“Tora promised me that he won’t see Ruki again…” Aoi said as he covered his eyes with his right hand.
“Aoi, come on…” Reita said. “This is not good for you. You have to-”
“I need to talk to Tora…” Aoi said when he opened his sling bag and took Ogre - the black cellphone Tora gave him - out.
“B-but, Aoi-”
“I’m not going to involve you in this, Rei…” said Aoi when he busied himself typing an email for Tora. “Ah, that reminds me…” This time, Aoi took Chizuru - his white cellphone - out. “Someday, may I call you?”
“O-of course… but…” Reita said.
“So... umm...” Aoi looked hesitated. “Can we exchange numbers?”
“Eh?” Reita was surprised. “Tora wouldn’t be too happy if he finds out about this, Aoi… I think…”
“I know…”
“You know he can hurt you again…”
“Tora don’t know about this cellphone’s existence,” Aoi said when he looked at Chizuru.
Reita wasn’t pretty sure about that. But he kept doing what Aoi asked him to do. More or less, Reita still had the curiosity about Aoi. He took out his cellphone, and they exchanged their numbers.
Aoi looked at his white cellphone. He read Reita’s number. “Thank you,” Aoi said. “But, please, let call you first, ‘kay? I can’t take the risk by accepting your call when I’m with Tora.” Aoi then switched Chizuru off.
“I understand…” Reita said before he looked at his own cellphone and checked Aoi’s number.
Aoi sighed. Just when he wanted to put Ogre inside his sling bag, the black cellphone ringed. Aoi checked his cellphone for the email he got. Aoi read the email, and he gasped at the contents of the email.
“What’s wrong?” Reita suddenly felt very worried. “Is it from Tora?”
“I-I’m sorry…” Aoi looked panic. “I have to go,” Aoi said as he put all of his things inside his sling bag.
“I have to meet someone.”
“Tora will pick you up?”
“No… I mean, yes… I mean…” Aoi closed his eyes for a moment. Clearly, he looked like he wanted to settle his emotion. “Yes, Tora will pick me up. But before that, I have to meet someone first.” Aoi looked at Reita. He bit his lower lip; he looked so nervous. “I’m going…” Then Aoi trotted, leaving Reita who just looked at the Beautiful Being. A lot of questions lingered in Reita’s mind.
*
Aoi entered the restroom in that campus. There, Aoi saw one of his friends, who also Tora’s cousin, Kai. When Kai looked at Aoi, he just smiled.
“Hey, Beautiful…” Kai greeted Aoi.
“Shut your mouth, Kai. Where were you?” Aoi could no longer hold his own words.
“A beautiful person like you shouldn’t say words like that, Aoi,” Kai said with a smile. “I was in the cafeteria…”
“Since when?”
“Not very long. The email I sent you earlier; I sent it just right when I entered the cafeteria. I saw you there, with someone I don’t know and-”
“What did you do there?”
“I did what Tora want me to do.”
Aoi felt the anger built inside him. He pushed Kai until Kai’s back leaned on the restroom’s wall. “You didn’t have to tell Tora what you saw today. I’m going to say it straight to Tora.”
“Hey? What are you talking about, Aoi? I don’t understand…” Kai said with a chuckle.
“Don’t you lie to me, Kai!” Aoi yelled. “Now I know why Tora always knew where I was, what am I doing, who I’m with and all. You’re the one who told Tora that I was with Reita in the cafeteria few days ago, right?”
Kai just laughed. “How did you know that?”
“You are the only one I could think of.”
“What made you think that way?”
“OK, Mr. Informant. You could be anywhere when no one realized your existence. But I think now I know your method. Oh, I’m sorry. You didn’t have any method. You’re just following me wherever I go. Am I right?”
Kai just smiled. That expressionless face sometimes gave more creep than Tora’s face, which already showed what he felt in his heart.
“I just don’t want my cousin feel disappointed with his lover, Aoi.”
“You should say that to Tora!” Aoi pointed at Kai’s face. “He asked me to be a loyal person for him, but look what he did behind me? Tora was not the most loyal person in this world, Kai. You know who Tora met yesterday.”
“Oh, really? Who?” Kai said with a surprised tone, yet he still smiled.
“Ruki. He still keeps his relationship with Ruki.”
“How did you know that?”
“This is not about how did I know that, Kai!” Aoi yelled. “Every time he felt upset about something I’ve never done, he would always go to Ruki.”
“That means it was still your fault, right?” Kai asked with a smile.
“What?!”
“If you don’t want Tora to go, you have to treat him good.”
“What didn’t I do, Kai!?” Aoi felt very upset. His sight was already blurred with tears. “I’ve done everything Tora wanted include came to his apartment every time he needed my body!”
“But you still did one thing. Reita,” Kai said casually.
“Wh-what..?” Aoi didn’t believe with what he heard.
“See that?” Kai touched Aoi’s cheek. “Your expression changed, Aoi. Now you know why Tora felt so upset about you.”
“Kai! Tora was already rude to me even before I know Reita!”
“That’s not the reason you could go to Reita when you upset about Tora too, right?”
Aoi looked at Kai disbelievingly. He opened his mouth but he couldn’t say anything in return. Kai could easily put all blame on Aoi. Kai knew about his cousin’s rudeness but he also knew how to defend Tora.
“Drop it, Aoi,” Kai said. “I promised, I won’t say anything about today to Tora. But keep your words. You have to tell Tora about it yourself, because tomorrow, I’ll ask him about your meeting with Reita. IF Tora still don’t know anything about that, IF he knows it from me - the one that supposedly he hears from you - you’ll know what Tora can do to you.” Kai smiled. He caressed Aoi’s cheek before he left Aoi crying alone in the restroom.
