Hermione shuffled her feet.
‘I’m not. Having a crush on you, that is.’
He looked at her.
‘But you do care.’
This was something she found easier to agree with.
‘I do care, yes. And I - well, I do like you. I’ve always admired you.’ She blushed. ‘I’d like to get to know you better. To become friends, perhaps … some day.’
As her voice trailed off, she expected him to tell her what a silly girl she was being. To tell her to leave.
He didn’t.
‘I think I’d like that, Miss Granger,’ he said at last. ‘Some day.’

When Hermione returned to the infirmary the next day, she nearly bumped into Kingsley Shacklebolt, the acting Minister of Magic, who was just on his way out.
Hermione hurried in, wondering why he had been there. The only possible reason she could think of was that Shacklebolt had been to see Snape. Everyone else that the Minister might have wanted to see was in St Mungo’s.
To her relief, Snape was still there, looking just the way he always did. Although when Hermione got closer, she noticed he seemed confused. And he was only holding his paper, not reading it.

She didn’t even have to ask.
‘Kingsley just told me that there will be no trial,’ he said instead of a greeting. ‘That it’s not needed. Apparently Potter shared the memories - my memories - with him, and this was enough to convince him of my … innocence. Such as it may be.’
It took her all her willpower to avoid jumping onto the bed and giving him a crushing hug. Or pulling him up and whirling around with him right there in the infirmary.
Instead, she just beamed at him and told him how incredibly happy she was to hear that.

‘So you are free to go as soon as your health allows?’ she asked hesitantly a little later.
‘In principle, yes,’ he agreed. ‘However, I think I may stay a little longer. Perhaps even until the end of the summer. The castle still needs a lot of repair work, and I believe I may be of some use here.’
Hermione smiled.
‘I’m glad to hear that. It looks like I will be staying for the summer, too. Apparently there are plans to let those seventh years who do not wish to repeat a year take their NEWTs in late August.’

A/N: I think this is the last but one set - with any luck, it'll be done tomorrow.
