Snape looked at the smaller hand clasping his.
‘Miss Granger … this is highly inappropriate,’ he said quietly after a few moments.
Hermione raised her eyes, looking straight at him.
‘I don’t see why,’ she countered. ‘I haven’t been a student for a year.’
He did not seem to have an immediate response to that. Hermione expected him to withdraw his hand, but he didn’t.
She felt a little awkward, not quite sure what to do next. With anyone else, such gestures would have been natural - reach out, offer comfort, pull back, continue the conversation as if nothing had happened.

A few moments later, she cleared her throat and stood up.
‘I should probably go. Professor McGonagall is expecting me and Harry,’ she said. ‘I don’t even know what she wants, but I suppose she’ll want to know how long we’re planning to stay at the school.’
A curt nod was the only response she got.
‘I’ll see you later then,’ she offered. ‘If that is - if that is still alright with you.’
He gave her a look she could not quite decipher.
‘I have not been able to stop you yet.’
‘I’d rather not be a nuisance,’ she whispered.

It was his turn to clear his throat now.
‘Miss Granger…’ he started, when Hermione stopped him.
‘It’s Hermione. Everyone here has been calling me by my given name since the battle. Even Professor McGonagall.’
He cleared his throat again, glancing towards the bookmark he was keeping on the small bedside table.
‘Miss Granger, as I was saying … I’m not quite sure how to put this delicately, but you’re not having some sort of - that is to say, you’re not having some sort of a schoolgirl crush on me, are you?’
‘No! I’m not a schoolgirl!’ she blurted out.

She blushed violently, realising what a blunder she had made.
‘I didn’t mean to say that! That is, I did mean that I’m not a schoolgirl, but this is not - oh, this is coming out all wrong!’
She could have sworn she saw Snape smirk for a moment.
‘You … you did that on purpose!’ she accused.
This time, he didn’t bother to hide the smirk.
‘Well, yes,’ he agreed. ‘The reactions of a Gryffindor can be quite - amusing, shall we say.’
Hermione huffed.
‘Regardless,’ he continued in a more serious voice, ‘I believe you did not answer my question.’
