Hermione smiled. She had, in fact, made sure that she would have an excuse for paying the surly man a visit.
‘You see, sir, I remembered this morning that the bookmark was still in my pocket, and I was wondering if it was safe for me to touch it again. That is, I wanted to ask if it was only meant to work once. I didn’t want to risk accidentally setting it off again!’
Snape sighed.
‘Give it here, Miss Granger. It’s quite safe now.’
She found the bookmark and handed it over, letting her thumb slide gently over it.

‘Now that I have answered your question, you may leave me alone.’
Hermione suppressed the urge to roll her eyes. Really, the man was impossible! She wasn’t even sure what she was doing here in the first place. Was it guilt? Curiosity? She supposed it was a bit of both, in addition to genuine concern - she wanted to make sure he was going to be alright.
And she wanted to see him, she admitted to herself. During the past year, she had caught herself wondering about him now and again - wondering if she could really have been wrong about him.

She made up her mind and took a seat at his bedside.
‘Miss Granger! I thought I made it clear that I would prefer to be left alone.’
She smiled at him.
‘I know, sir. But Madam Pomfrey told me yesterday that it would be okay for me to visit you. And I thought you might like to have some company.’
‘Obviously, you thought wrong.’
‘Is there anything I could do for you? Fetch you some water, or perhaps a book?’
He sighed again - quite dramatically, thought Hermione.
‘You could go away, Miss Granger. Isn’t young Weasley hovering around somewhere?’

Hermione wondered why he seemed so determined to get rid of her.
No matter his reasons, for the time being she was pleased that she was currently not a student at Hogwarts - as he could not take points from Gryffindor or give her detention, she felt safe enough to disobey him. She supposed there was always the chance of him hexing her, but she felt reasonably sure he wouldn’t go that far.
‘Ron left this morning, to stay with his family. They have … they have Fred’s funeral to prepare.’
To her surprise he didn’t sneer, looking rather sombre instead.
