Hermione was listening avidly, almost wishing she had a notebook and a quill - or a pencil - at hand. She didn’t think he’d appreciate her taking notes, though. ‘This is not a lecture,’ she admonished herself, ‘no matter how interesting it may be!’

‘So you managed to make the Portkey work for a specific person? As it worked for me but not for Ron?’ she asked eagerly. ‘But wait, this cannot be - when you made it I hadn’t even been born yet. Had to be something else then… It wasn’t based on the gender of the person touching it, was it?’

He looked somewhat incredulous at that.

‘For luring unsuspecting young maidens into the Forbidden Forest? Just who do you take me for, Miss Granger?’

She blushed. It had certainly not been her intention to imply that, but she could see how Snape - a man who was obviously used to having people think the worst of him - could have jumped to that conclusion.

‘Sorry, sir,’ she mumbled. ‘But I can’t think of any other reason why I activated it, not Ron. Unless he didn’t come into contact with it, but I could swear he did when he was browsing the journal.’

‘It was far more complex than that, Miss Granger.’

For a moment, his eyes flashed with an almost proud look, but when he continued, his voice sounded weary and disappointed.

‘It - it doesn’t matter, really. It obviously didn’t work. Not in the way I had intended.’

The resignation in his words made her heart ache. She wished she could just wrap her arms around him and console him, but remembered that she could not. This was an interrogation -you don’t just Portkey people around against their wish or knowledge, after all! And besides, this was Snape. Not Ron. Not huggable.

‘What had you intended, sir?’

‘Does it matter?’

‘Of course it does! I was Portkeyed here, you have somehow ended up here, and I want to know exactly what happened!’

He sighed.

‘I had combined a potion and a few rather complex spells… it took me months, a year even, to do it. It was supposed to… I assume Potter has shared with you some aspects of my past? Of my - friendship - with his mother?’

She nodded.

‘I had hoped that… if I could prove to her that she still cared… if I could get her away from her housemates…’

A/N: Honestly, I didn't mean to end it here. But my day's allocated number of words just happened to run out! Really!
On to parts 25-28.
