Hermione noticed that Harry was lingering in the infirmary a bit longer than necessary. Seeing how impatient Ron was getting, she pulled on Harry’s sleeve and nodded towards the door.

‘We should go now, let Madam Pomfrey get back to work,’ she whispered.

Before accompanying the boys out, Hermione took one last look at Snape. ‘I’d like to come back later, if that’s alright with you,’ she said quietly. ‘To see how you’re doing.’

Snape scowled, looking displeased with the idea, when Madam Pomfrey told her kindly that of course it would be fine, provided he got some rest first.

Almost as soon as they were out of the door, Ron stopped her.

‘So what happened then? Where did you go? What’s up with Snape being alive and where did you find him?’

Hermione considered her answer for a moment.

‘The bookmark was a Portkey. It took me right outside the Shrieking Shack. I went in, just to see - to check if Snape’s body was still there. And then when I took a closer look, I noticed he was still breathing!’

‘But the last time we saw him there… I was so sure he’d died,’ said Harry.

‘So was I.’

‘What took you so long though? You were gone for ages!’

Hermione felt a pang of guilt at seeing how worried her - best friend? boyfriend? - looked.

‘I had to see if he was going to be alright... and I had my bag with me. I had to try! After we’d left him there during the battle… I know there was so much going on then, and we didn’t really have time to check, and we all thought he was dead anyway, but when I saw him there… I really felt bad. And then I waited for him to wake up.’

‘I wonder why our locator spells didn’t work,’ Harry mused.

Hermione shrugged.

‘I don’t know. Maybe someone - Voldemort or Snape himself - had done something to keep the identity of anyone occupying the Shrieking Shack a secret from others?’

She wasn’t quite sure why she was lying. She just knew that she didn’t want to explain the whole story - what had really happened - to the boys. Especially to Ron.

Especially as she still didn’t quite know what had happened.

She had a feeling that Ron wouldn’t take it well, if she tried to explain. Not the part dealing with affection, anyway.
