“What bug crawled up your ass?” Cristina asked as Izzie landed on the chair beside her.

“Fucking women.” Came the curt response.

“I take it all is not well in paradise?” the brunette retorted.

“Not even one fucking day and she’s fucking around with someone else.” Izzie spat.

“Okaaaay.” Cristina drawled. “Wanna talk about it?”

“I thought your quota was up?” Izzie snarled.

“A friend in need and all that, what is it? Tell me. Now Stevens.” The brunette ordered.

“I called her this morning and a guy answered.”

“Well, that could be anything, it doesn’t mean she’s screwing someone else.”

“At 7.45 in the morning?” Izzie asked.

“Ok, could she have been at work?” Cristina was looking for reasons

“Apparently she was getting dressed for work, according to Pete.” Izzie was getting riled.

“Izzie calm down. There has to be a simple explanation to this.” Cristina reasoned. “She adores you Izzie, I could see that and I don’t have feelings. Why can’t you see that?”  Izzie sighed, she knew Cristina was right, Addison had been upfront and honest about what had happened with Pete. Addison had also shown Izzie just how much she meant to her all weekend. The redhead had explained since the divorce she had taken a vow of celibacy and would only sleep with someone she truly had feelings for and Izzie believed her, Addison had said it with so much conviction and emotion. Izzie felt whenever Addison looked at her, it was only at her, and when Addison touched her, it felt like Addison only touched her and every time she did so was like the first time and the last time all at once. “Don’t throw away what could possibly be the best thing you ever had because of your stupid hot head.” Izzie was aghast at her friend’s words but knew she was right.

“What? Are you the love guru or something?” Izzie snapped.

“You will never repeat a word of this to anyone.” Cristina threatened, her index finger pointed at Izzie’s face. The blonde put up her hands in defence.

“I got it.” She agreed.

“So what are you going to do?” Cristina asked.

“I’m going to call Addison.” Izzie said.

“Do it then.”

“Now?”

“Yes. Now. You call her now, when she answers, I’ll leave.” Izzie threw a warning glance at her friend. “ I promise.” The other doctor stated.

“Here goes.” Izzie said, removing her cell phone from her lab coat pocket. “What shall I say?” she asked.

“Durh.” Cristina said with no further explanation.

Izzie called Addison’s number, a wave of emotions hit her like a freight train, all of a sudden she was nervous.

“Hey, I wondered when you would call.” The familiar voice on the end answered.

“Hi, Addison.” Izzie stated. She waved at Cristina as the brunette doctor walked away.

“You ok?” Addison asked inquisitively and slightly concerned.

“I called you this morning.” The blonde said.

“You did?” Addison frowned, “I didn’t get a missed call.” Izzie sighed, ok, so Pete hadn’t passed on the message, that was no great surprise.

“That’s because Pete answered your cell.” The blonde said, a hint of annoyance in her voice.

“Pete? But . . .” Addison drifted off, it was clear to Izzie she was thinking about something. “When did you call?

“Err, it was 7.45.”

“Oh right!” Addison said, as if a light bulb had gone off in her head. “I got called into work for an emergency procedure just after seven, I would have been changing into my scrubs then.” The redhead explained. She paused, there was silence the other end of the line, “You didn’t think . . .” she began, her mind wondering, “Did you think he was at my home?” she asked.

“I, I didn’t know, he was rather smug and you said you would be at work later and . . . Addie, I’m sorry I didn’t know what to think.” Pleaded Izzie. Addison sighed loudly.

“Oh Izzie.” She said like a disappointed mother. “It’s not even been one day Izzie and already you think I’m sleeping with someone else.”

“Addison, I’m sorry, I jumped to conclusions, it was early, I’ve not had enough sleep, I just couldn’t think straight and you have to kick Pete’s ass because I don’t like him. Why didn’t he just tell me where you were?” Izzie whined.

“Firstly Izzie, you have to trust me or this won’t work. Secondly, Pete was out of order for not telling me you called and for not telling you I was at work.” Addison said.

“I do trust you, I just, it’s everyone else I don’t trust.” Izzie sighed. “You’re so hot, I’m not surprised you have people falling at your feet.” She said.

“There’s only one pair of feet I’m falling at Izzie.” Addison declared. “And that’s yours, remember that.”

“I will.” Izzie smiled, “I promise.”

“Now let’s see if we can go the next two weeks without drama.” Addison laughed.

“When I meet Pete, I am going to show him exactly who’s woman you are.” Izzie warned.

“Please do, maybe then he’ll actually stop hassling me. Which reminds me,” Addison began, “How’s the whole Alex thing?”

“He’s not been near me. Actually no one has this morning I can’t understand . . . oh yeah . . .”

“You had your angry face on didn’t you?” Addison asked with a hint of amusement in her voice.

“Yeah.” Izzie agreed. “It’s ok, I’m ok now.” She offered.

“That’s good to hear. If I could kiss you right now I would.”

“I know, me too.” Izzie sighed. “I miss you.” She said.

“I miss you too.”

“I don’t want to get all mopey,” Izzie began, “I have been through far too many emotions today.”

“That’s ok. I have to get going Iz, speak to you later?” Addison asked.

“Of course.” Izzie smiled.

“I err, I, bye Izzie.”Addison stuttered.

“Bye Addison.” Izzie said, smiling at the redhead’s faltered speech.  She hung up the phone once again, this time feeling considerably happier than the last time she had called Addison’s number. The blonde sighed with content, she put her arms down on the table before her and rested her weary head atop and closed her eyes for a moment.

“Hey Izzie.” The voice penetrated the silence the blonde had been basking in.

“Better be good Alex.” Izzie said, refusing to open her eyes.

“Do you want to . . .” he began, “Iz, could you look at me please?” Izzie opened one eye and squinted slightly. When Alex didn’t continue she huffed, audibly displaying her disgruntlement, she sat up, eyes wide, emphasising her attention was all on Alex.

“What is it?” she asked.

“Do you want to go out with me?” Alex said, “Again, but like different this time, I want to do it properly.” He explained. Izzie narrowed her eyes.

“I’m sorry Alex,” she started, his face fell immediately at the words, “you’re a nice enough guy but, I’m with someone now.” She explained.

“Oh really? I’m too late.”

“Yeah, too late.” Izzie agreed. “And too masculine.” She smiled.

“What do you mean, too masculine? You can’t get too masculine.” Alex retorted.

“You can when you’re dating a woman.” Izzie said brazenly.

“Wait, what?” Alex said shaking his head in disbelief.

“I’m with Addison.” She stated. Alex frowned, his facial expression conveyed mild confusion.

“Montgomery?” he asked.

“Yep.” Izzie said breezily.

“Dr Addison Montgomery?”

“Yeah.” Izzie repeated rolling her eyes, “How many do you know?” she asked, her tone oozing sarcasm.

“You and Montgomery.” Alex stated, Izzie could see the cogs turning in his mind, his brain was on over drive. A smirk crossed his lips and spread across the whole of his face. “That’s hot.” He concluded.

“Yes, it’s very hot, but could you please not fantasise about us, or if you do, not tell me?” Izzie asked.

“Yeah sure.” Alex replied.

“Are we cool?” Izzie asked.

“Are you happy?”

“Very.”

“Then yeah, we’re cool.” Alex said with a genuine smile.

“Thanks Alex.” Izzie replied.

The day had been gruelling, Izzie had been pushed to the limit and was ready to drop. An emergency had come in ten minutes before the blonde was due to leave and it had kept her back a further four hours due to surgery. It was eleven o’clock by the time Izzie stumbled through her front door and headed straight up to bed. She was beyond exhausted. The intern dropped her bag just inside her room and switched the light on. Her eyes scoured the room before landing on the bed, she gasped slightly.

“Jeez, George, what the hell are you doing in my bed?”

“I had a fight with Callie, I think my marriage is over.”

“Oh George.” Izzie sighed, although this was the last thing she needed to deal with at this time of night, George was her friend and he needed her. She kicked off her shoes, shed her jacket and walked over to the bed, slipping in under the covers on the other side.  She lay there looking at the ceiling, occasionally glancing over at George as he regaled his tales of woe. She would pat him on the arm, hum in agreement and offer her opinion every now and then, like a good friend did. However, she was becoming increasingly tired and no matter how many times or how loudly she yawned, George remained, chattering on like a child in kindergarten.  Izzie glanced at the clock, it had barely been half an hour, she frowned, it had seemed so much longer. The blonde felt guilty for feeling tired and wanting to just sleep, George needed her and all she could think about was two things, Addison and sleep.

Izzie had always been there for George and vice versa, they had grown close over the years, living together had excelled that friendship and even had Callie, George’s wife jealous of their friendship and suspicious. Izzie had often wondered herself prior to George’s wedding if he harboured any romantic feelings for her. It was then she felt an arm snake over her waist, she glanced sideways, a questioning look on her face, George stared back at her, his face void of emotion. Izzie frowned, George moved closer.

“What are you doing?” Izzie asked. Her friend ignored the words and advanced, the blonde shimmied away until George had her pinned to the bed. “George!” she shrieked as he moved in for a kiss. “Get off!” she called, she shoved as hard she could until the other doctor fell back onto the other side of the bed.

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I just thought . . . you are so sweet and understanding and I thought . . .”

“No George, you didn’t think. You’re taking advantage of me and you’re upset with Callie.” She said. “I get that your emotions are all over the place but you can’t do that. We’re friends George.”

“I’m sorry Izzie, I hope I haven’t ruined our friendship.” Izzie sighed heavily at George’s apology. So many times he got it wrong, just like the time he had slept with Meredith, what a mistake that had been. She could hear George talking, but none of it now was penetrating her brain. All she could think about was this great mess, Addison and the mistake she had made herself that very morning.

As she glanced back at the bumbling doctor Izzie’s cell phone rang. She frowned, at picked the object out of her pocket. George paused mid flow and looked at Izzie, a questioning look on his face. As Izzie glanced at the caller display she smiled and turned back to George, “I have to get this.” She stated.

“At this time of night? Is it work?” he asked. The blonde shook her head in response and put the phone to her ear, pulling back the covers and swinging her legs round and out of the bed as she answered.

“Hey.” She said wearily. She listened intently to the soothing voice on the other end and smiled with adoration. “Yeah I just got in about half an hour ago.” She stood and looked at George who had been staring at her intently before he was caught gazing, his eyes darted around the room, pretending to not pay attention. “No I wasn’t sleeping, you can call any time, you know that.” She gushed. The blonde walked back around the bed and toward the door. “I miss you too.” She grinned, before composing herself, “I’m sorry about this morning,” she began, “I know how you feel about me, I was just feeling a little insecure and I guess I was just being stupid.” She opened the door and stepped out into the landing, pulling it to behind her.

“I kicked Pete’s ass for you, well for us.” Addison said.

“Good.” Izzie smiled.

“I told him that if he were to answer my cell again, to tell my girlfriend exactly where I am and what I am doing.”

Izzie chuckled, “How did he take that?”

“Oh he was stunned to silence and then apologised profusely.” Addison grinned, the blonde could hear it in her voice. Izzie had moved into the bathroom, put down the toilet seat and was sat on the top of it, her elbows on her knees. “I asked him not to say anything to the others yet. I just needed him to understand I have a girlfriend whom I am besotted with and he can’t chase me anymore.”

“You’re besotted with me?” Izzie asked shyly.

“Completely.” Addison sighed. “I can’t wait till I can hold you again.”

“Me either.” The blonde sighed sadly.

“Don’t worry, the next couple weeks will fly by.” Addison said.

“It had better, I’m getting withdrawal symptoms already. And at the risk of sounding sleazy, I can’t wait till I can feel your skin on mine, your hands on my body . . .” Izzie drifted off.

“Oh fuck Izzie, what are you doing to me?”

“I’d love to be doing it to you right now.” Izzie smiled.

“You’re gonna get me all worked up.” Addison stated.

“Ah, me too, I better stop, George is in my bed.” The blonde remembered.

“George is in your bed? Should I be jealous?” Addison asked. Izzie exhaled before speaking.

“He tried to kiss me.” She answered honestly.

“But he’s married.” Addison stated.

“He and Callie had an argument, he thinks they’re over. He’s upset he doesn’t know what he’s doing.” The blonde explained. “I pushed him away and he apologised.” She concluded.

“Ok. I know he’s your friend and I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t be tempted.” Addison said.

“Not at all. He’s so not my type.” Izzie laughed.

“What is your type?” the redhead asked curiously.

“Look in the mirror.” Izzie stated, “You’re it.” She said. “And look into your eyes, I lose myself in those eyes.” She smiled shyly.

“I wish you were here saying that.” The former attending sighed.

“Me too.” The blonde agreed. “Is this normal?” Izzie asked suddenly.

“Is what normal?” Addison asked suspiciously.

“This? Us? Don’t you think it’s happening too quickly?” the blonde explained.

There was a pause on the other end before Addison spoke up, “It’s unconventional sure, you’re there, I’m here. We’ve known each other for years Iz, it’s not like we just met. We’ve built up a rapport and gotten to know each other over the last month or so online, on the phone, we just don’t physically see one another all that much and when we did at the weekend, it was quality time we spent. We talked a lot, we made love a lot, we explored one another emotionally and physically and I think what we have is as special and as beautiful as any other couple.” She explained.

Izzie gulped, swallowing the tears that were threatening to spill, she looked up to the ceiling and closed her eyes. Addison’s words were spoken truly from the heart. The blonde didn’t know how to respond, she sat there, the silence strangely comfortable on a device that was designed for speech.

“You say things like that and I could easily fall for you.” Izzie said honestly.

“I would hope it takes more than an impromptu monologue to have you fall for me.” Addison teased.

“Oh there is so much more to you than a monologue.” Izzie smiled, “But you always know the right things to say at the right time.”

“Hard day?”

“Like you wouldn’t believe.” Izzie replied. “I just want to go to bed.”

“Go and kick George out.”

“I think I might just do that.” The blonde chuckled. “Then I can take you to bed with me.”

“Oh Izzie Stevens, I am a lucky woman.” Addison replied.  Izzie stood and walked over to the door, she opened it quickly and was surprised to see a pair of eyes looking back at her like a rabbit caught in headlights.

“Can I call you back in five?” Izzie asked over the cell. Her angry eyes not wavering from the ones before her. She waited for the response before replying. “I have a situation. I’ll call you back, I promise, I want to say goodnight properly.” She said quietly, her eyes now diverted. “Bye.” She said quickly before hanging up. “What the hell George?” Izzie asked.

“I can’t get out of this one.” The guy muttered.

“No you can’t. How dare you listen to my private conversation.” The blonde stated.

“I’m sorry Izzie.”

“You seem to be saying that a lot tonight, but I’m not seeing much remorse.” Izzie said.

“Are you seeing someone?”

“Clearly I am, if you actually heard any of that conversation you will know that I am, and what you did was out of line George.”

“I know, I know. Is it someone I know?”

“Seriously George?” Izzie said with exasperation. “I’m seeing Addison, I’m with Addison Montgomery and she’s quite possibly the best thing to have ever happened to me. So don’t you dare say a word. I’m going to my room now and I’m going to say goodnight to my girlfriend.” The blonde said. “You are leaving.” Izzie ordered, not giving her friend any choice. She watched as George’s shoulders dropped, he turned around and headed for the stairs, his head was down and he descended the stairs quietly. When he was out of sight, Izzie sighed once again. Today had been bizarre to say the least. She turned the light off in the bathroom and gently padded across the floor back to her bedroom. Shedding her clothes, she crawled into bed wearing just a tank top and boy shorts, her favourite, most comfortable attire to bed and she lay down with a satisfied groan. Izzie picked up her cell phone and hit redial in order to fulfil her promise and say goodnight to her girl. This call would be the best conversation Izzie would have all day.
