“Dr Stevens, there’s a phone call for you.” The nurse beside her said.  Izzie was lounging in a chair, with her feet on the desk at the nurses station, waiting on interns to bring her news, results, anything to keep her occupied.

“Huh? Me?”

“Yes ma’am.”

“Who is it?”

“I’m not sure, she didn’t say her name.”

“Okaaaay.” The blonde frowned, thinking possibly it could be her mother, but she barely called her at home, let alone calling her at work. She reached over and took the receiver from the nurse. “Dr Stevens?” She sighed into the handset.

“Stevens!” the cheery voice at the other end beamed.  Izzie, eyes wide in complete shock at the recognition of the voice threw herself backwards, the chair gave way from beneath her and the resident went flying and landed on the floor with a thud. Unable to disentangle herself she gingerly put the phone to her ear.

“Dr Montgomery?”

“Are you ok? I heard a crash.”

“Huh? Yeah I err, erm, yeah fine, I’m fine. Why, why are you calling?” The blonde asked perplexed.

“Jeez Izzie, what the hell are you doing on the floor? I think you had better tidy up this mess before Bailey sees it.” Alex shouted over the top of the desk.

“Can it Karev.” Izzie yelled back, her hand loosely over the receiver.

“You’re on the floor Izzie? What happened?” Addison asked with concern.

“I fell off my chair, I’m fine.” She said with short breath.

“Really, you don’t sound so . . .”

“I’m good, thanks Addison.” Izzie responded.

“So, are you going to get up?” The redhead asked.

“I’m kinda, a little bit stuck.”

“Are you hurt?”

“Nah, oh ow, maybe a little.”

“What hurts?”

“My arm, I probably just banged it is all.”

“You should get it checked out.”

“I will, once I get my ass out of this mess.” The blonde laughed. Addison could not help but laugh along with her.

“Do you want me to call you back?”

“I’ll call you, embarrassingly, one of my interns has just turned up with some results I’ve been waiting on.”

“Ok. You’ll need my number.”

“I will.”

“I’ll give you my cell.” Addison reeled off her number to Izzie.

“I err, can’t write it down, text me, here’s mine.” The blonde proceeded to give Addison her number.

“Well that was easy.” Izzie could hear the smirk in Addison’s voice.

“What was?” the blonde asked cautiously.

“Getting your number. Speak to you later Izzie.” And with that Addison hung up.  Izzie, once again left bewildered looked at the phone in her hand as the line went dead.

“Err Dr Stevens? Do you need a hand?”

“Yes, get this thing off of me.” Izzie huffed, flapping at the carnage surrounding her.

Eight hard hours and two surgeries later, Izzie walked lazily down the corridor, ripping the scrub cap from her head and smashing it into the trash. She was suitably exhausted. It had been another long day with repercussions following the building collapse.  The weary blonde took the white lab coat from her locker and draped it over her shoulders, sliding her arms into the sleeves, wincing slightly at the pull in her shoulder. She took out her stethoscope and placed it around her neck, stretching her muscles from side to side as she did so. Fumbling around in her pocket, Izzie found her cell phone and subsequently pulled it out of her pocket. Glancing at the display, she noticed several new messages, one from a number she didn’t recognise. Opening it up, she smiled in realisation it was Addison. ‘This is my number. A x’  She glanced at the time and sighed, ten thirty, she was unsure if the redhead would be awake. Taking a seat on the bench, the resident proceeded to type out a message. ‘Sorry, just got out of my second laborious surgery. Not sure if you’re awake. I x’ Izzie saved Addison’s number and responded to her other messages.

“Stevens?” Callie stuck her head round the door.

“Yes, Dr Torres?”

“You can go home, orders from the Chief.”

“Thank you.” The blonde smiled genuinely, topping it off with a yawn.

“Looks like you’re ready.”

“I sure am.”

“Thanks for you help.” Callie said with a warm smile. “I really do appreciate it, despite our history.”

“You’re welcome.” Izzie responded. The cell phone in her pocket began to vibrate, followed by a ring, she took it in her hand and looked at the caller display, her stomach flipped upon sight of the name and smiled involuntarily. Looking up she held the phone up, “I err, I have to take this.”

“Sure, goodnight Stevens.” Callie responded and swiftly exited the locker room.

“Hey.”

“Hi.”

“I wasn’t sure if you were still awake.”

“It’s 10.45, the night is young Stevens.” Addison said, promptly followed by a yawn.

The blonde giggled, “You sure about that?”

“Ok, so I’m in bed, but I have a good book with me.”

Izzie’s brain momentarily went numb, the thought of Addison in bed had her reeling. “Er, I’m sorry I didn’t want to disturb you.”

“Hey, it’s ok. How’s your arm?”

“My arm?” Izzie asked, before remembering her previous conversation with the redhead - on the floor in a heap, “Arh, it’s my shoulder, it’s not too bad, a little stiff after the surgeries.”

“They go ok?”

“We lost the last one.” Izzie sighed heavily.

“I’m sorry Iz. Are you ok?”

“Better now I’m talking to you.” There was a pause, Izzie slapped her forehead at her forwardness, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean . . .”

“It’s ok.” Addison reassured, “It helps hearing a friendly voice, I’m pleased I can be here for you.”

“Thank you Addison, I guess I’ve not really had anyone I can turn to like the others do.”

“I know what you mean, being the new girl here is a lot like that.”

“Listen to us with our tails of woe.” Izzie laughed.

“Yes, let’s not depress ourselves further.” Addison replied.

“So, what can I do for you?”

“Huh?” Addison offered, confused.

“You called me, remember?” the blonde smiled.

“I did. Well actually, don’t hate me, I called for the Chief but he wasn’t available so I had them patch me through to you for a chat.”

“Seriously? Is that it? I thought you had some burning issue to discuss.”

“It turns out I did.” Addison said coyly.

“You did?”

“I got your number.” Izzie laughed at Addison’s sickly sweet voice.

“Yes you did, but had you asked I would have given it to you.”

“Really? It would have been that easy?”

“Well I don’t go giving it out to just anybody.” Izzie smirked.

“Good to hear.” Addison said. “Are you still at work?”

“Yeah, but I’ve been given the all clear to head home.”

“So why aren’t you?” the redhead asked.

“I’m talking to you.”

“You should go home. It’s late.”

“I should, but that would require putting the phone down.” Izzie flirted, unintentionally, but with Addison, it was so easy.

“Don’t feel like you have to talk to little old lonely me.” Addison laughed.

“You’re hardly old Addison.” Izzie rolled her eyes.

“That was the correct thing to say Izzie, you’ve passed that test.”

“Oh I’m being tested?”

“Mmmm, not really, it’s just fun to tease you.”

“And apparently quite easy.”

“I wouldn’t say you were easy.” Addison laughed.

“And that, Addison, was the correct thing to say.” Izzie smiled.  She stretched her shoulders again, sitting in the one position was playing havoc with her sore muscles.

“Ok, so why aren’t you moving Stevens? You need to get some rest.” The blonde sighed.

“You’re right, I do.”

“Right, so get your bag and move that ass. Text me when you get home.”

Izzie smiled at the caring and thoughtful woman she was talking to at the other end of the phone. “You have a deal. I’ll speak to you soon. Sweet dreams.”

“Take care Izzie. Goodnight.”

“Goodnight Addison.” And with that, Izzie hit the end button, sighing heavily and looking dreamily at her cell phone as she did so.

Izzie lay in her bed staring at the ceiling, she had showered and changed into her boyshorts and tank top, her usual bedtime attire. She blinked a few times, a frown forming on her face as she thought back on the day’s activities. What puzzled her the most was the impromptu phone call from Addison, it had been strange to say the least. The redhead had explained the reason for the phone call, but the blonde couldn’t help but wonder if there was any deeper meaning. It had followed the notification of Addison’s comment on Izzie’s photograph.  Thinking of the initial conversation Izzie laughed out loud to herself, picturing the absurd situation, the way she had catapulted out of the chair and landed so ineloquently on the hard hospital floor. It was completely beyond belief, you couldn’t make that stuff up, she thought. Her only saving grace was that Addison had not been there to see it, because, well that would have just been embarrassing.  She thought long and hard about Addison, she had loved hearing her voice again after all those months, the sultry tone, the way she said her name, Izzie hadn’t realised just how much she had missed her.  The blonde shifted, feeling her stomach somersault at the mere thought of the neo natal surgeon. The resident sighed heavily before picking up her cell phone, she had made a promise she intended to keep.

I - I’m home, safe and sound.

It only took a few minutes for a return message to come through.

A - Good, I was getting worried.

I - I had a shower and now I’m in bed, all cosy.

A - Sounds like heaven.

I - It is after a long day at work.

A - I can imagine. Early start tomorrow?

I - Yeah, no rest for the wicked.

A - I wouldn’t have thought you were the wicked type, you always seem so . . . nice.

I - Oh I can be a naughty girl ;-)

A - I’m starting to believe it, you’ll have to introduce me some time :p

Izzie’s heart leapt into her mouth, the butterflies in her stomach were having an out of control frat  party. She wondered for a moment, how could she respond to that?

I - That could be arranged, if you’re a good girl.

Izzie’s thumb hovered over the send button, deleting then re-writing the words several times. She bit her lip and closed her eyes, biting the bullet, she hit send. She waited patiently for a reply, she could feel her eye lids getting heavier, as they drew to a close she forced them open, her eyes struggling to focus in the dimly lit room. Then she would endure the ritual again and again before it became too much, she succumbed to the power of sleep. Jerking awake, Izzie felt her cell phone vibrate beneath her hip.

“Oh god.” She groaned at both the sensation and the shock it caused her, tearing her from her sleep. The blonde pulled the phone to her face and squinted into the light, it was from Addison, she grinned, of course it was, this is the reply she had been waiting for. Momentarily wracking her brain at the last message she herself sent, she took a breath and waited for what seemed like forever as the text message opened before her.

A - Sounds like a match made in heaven, name the time and place and I’ll be there ;-)

In her sleep induced haze, Izzie replied straight away.

I - It’s a date. I’m falling asleep, I’ll call you tomorrow. Goodnight xx

A - Sorry my conversation isn’t thrilling enough for you Stevens ;-) sweet dreams xx
