Spoilers: No spoilers per se, just pretend Addison’s just moved to LA and everything with Izzie is hunky dory!
Half an hour later, as Izzie was pulling off surgical gloves following an examination, her cell phone vibrated in her pocket. ‘Moment of truth’ she thought as she retrieved her new worst enemy - following alcohol of course. The blonde glanced around, ensuring there were no prying eyes, she had no idea how she was about to react to this message for she had no insight into its content - assuming it was Addison of course. Her assumption was correct and she smiled in small triumph. She closed her eyes as the words appeared on the screen. Squinting, she widened them slowly.
A - I guess you’ve now discovered last night’s messages. Don’t worry, I’m flattered, I just hope it was true ;-) x
Izzie stood with her mouth agape, not quite what she was expecting, but then again, she wasn’t sure what she was expecting, this whole ‘thing’ with Addison had been a complete bolt out of the blue. Nothing she would have thought was possible, and that was just the friendship part. Anything beyond that was almost bordering complete fiction. The blonde doctor smiled, she was now required to come up with a response.
I - It was true, is true. I really, really like you Addison x
Almost as soon as Izzie had hit the send button, the phone began vibrating in her hand. Addison was calling her. What was she going to say? She put any doubts aside as she put the phone to her ear as she accepted the call.
“Hi.” She said sweetly.
“Hey.” Addison responded. “You really, really like me huh?”
“Uh yeah.” Izzie laughed, “I really, really like you.” She admitted.
“That’s good.”
“It is?”
“Yeah, because I really, really like you too.” Addison’s voice was intensely sweet.
“I think you’ve made me the happiest girl in Seattle.” Izzie said, swaying on the spot.
“And there lies the problem.” The redhead sighed. “You’re in Seattle and I’m in Los Angeles.”
“That is a major problem.” Izzie said sadly.
“Hey, Izzie?”
“Yeah?”
“Don’t think about that right now.” Addison said soothingly. Izzie sighed, it was difficult not to think about it. Although having been so busy at work recently, had she actually been dating anyone, she would barely have seen them anyway, she would have had to rely on telephone calls and text messages. Right now she would concentrate on hearing Addison’s voice, it was like velvet, so smooth and . . . “Izzie?”
“Huh, yeah?”
“Where did you go?” the neonatal surgeon asked.
“Oh.” Izzie blushed, her hand found her head and rubbed a phantom headache away. “I was just thinking . . .”
“I told you not to think.” Addison laughed.
“I know, I guess if you tell me not to do something I’ll go ahead and do it anyway, it’s the rebellious teen in me.”
“There you go talking about that naughty girl again.” The redhead smiled. Izzie laughed.
“You need to stop referring to that, you make it sound like I have a split personality disorder.”
“Ok, I’ll only refer to it when appropriate, how’s that?”
“It’ll be interesting to see what you deem as appropriate.” Izzie said. She was leaning against a wall, her back was starting to ache and she had changed standing foot several times. She pushed herself off the wall and started to walk slowly down the corridor, swaying and smiling as she was listening to Addison on the other end. It was a voice that drove her to distraction, but equally was as soothing as a lullaby. Izzie came to a halt outside an on-call room, she opened the door quietly and upon confirming its vacant state she slipped inside. Closing the door behind her, she slinked over to a bed and sat down. The blonde kicked off her shoes and swivelled around, lowering her body onto the mattress. She let out a small groan.
“Wow I didn’t know my words had such an effect.” Addison joked upon hearing Izzie’s moan.
“I just lay down. I cannot tell you how good it feels.” Izzie sighed with great satisfaction.
“You need to stop making noises like that Izzie.” Addison warned. The blonde’s eyes widened.
“I’m sorry.” Izzie smiled, not really sorry at all.
“So, mother of all hangovers?” the redhead decided to change the subject swiftly.
“You could say that.” Izzie giggled, “But it’s not been so bad since I’ve been talking to you.”
“That’s good to hear.”
“Did you have a good time last night?” Izzie asked.
“Yeah, it was fun. I have some great work colleagues.” Addison responded.
“It’s great to have friends you work with, especially with the work we do.”
“Yeah, it is, you’re lucky you have that, I didn’t when I was in Seattle, not really anyway.”
“It’s also great to have just one person that’s not there, that you can talk to.” Izzie said quietly.
“It is. I can be yours Izzie. I’ve seen how that place can tear you up.”
“Thank you I’d like that.” The blonde said earnestly, it was rapidly followed by a yawn. “Same goes for you.”
“Thanks Izzie, I already kind of feel like you are. I’ve been so grateful having you at the end of the phone.” Izzie grinned, her eyes closed, if it weren’t for the hangover and immense tiredness, she would have performed a happy dance. “What are you doing?”Addison asked, suspicious of the silence.
“Well, I’m laying on a bed, my eyes are closed and I’m talking to you. If I didn’t have a headache right now I would say this was close to perfection.”
“It could be even more perfect and I could be lying next to you.” Addison said quietly.
“And even more so if you were holding me.” Izzie dared. She heard Addison sigh on the other end and there was a moment of comfortable silence, simultaneous thoughts running through their minds.
“Izzie, I have to go, I’m sorry.”
“Hey it’s ok, I understand it’s the middle of the day and people work and stuff.” The blonde laughed nervously.
“Talk to you later?” Addison asked hopefully.
“Of course.” Izzie stated with a smile.
“And for the record, I couldn’t think of anything I would want more than to lay there with you, holding you.” The redhead explained softly. Izzie could feel the emotion rising in her, her eyes were beginning to well up with tears. She closed her eyes, preventing them from falling, denying the opportunity of turning this fantasy she had with Addison into a painful reality. Everything so far had been manageable, fun even, but the more she talked with the redhead, the more she discovered about the other woman and the more Addison appeared to care for her also, she felt herself beginning to spiral out of control, her feelings taking an unexpected turn. Izzie found herself missing Addison when she was not in some form of contact with her.
“Iz?” Addison asked tentatively, worried that the blonde had not responded.
“Yeah?” Izzie said weakly. “I’m ok. I err, I just . . .”
“Shhh.” The neonatal surgeon soothed, “It’s ok. I’ll call you later, ok?”
“Yeah.” The resident sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose.
“Bye Izzie.”
“Goodbye Addison.” Izzie responded. She threw the phone down onto the bed beside her and turned over, lying on her side, facing the wall. It was then she let the tears silently fall from her chocolate brown eyes, scrunching them closed and praying they would stop some time soon.

A couple of days had passed by uneventfully, Izzie had spent much of her spare time either speaking with Addison on the phone or exchanging random text messages. Addison had started sending Izzie various picture messages, little things she found amusing or things she had wanted to share with the blonde. Izzie too had sent pictures to Addison, usually things she thought would make her smile. She was in the middle of sending one of The Chief asleep at his desk, she had gone to his office for some advice and inadvertently interrupted his ‘nap time’. Harbouring a huge grin, anticipating the look upon the redhead’s face, she entered the caferteria. She had followed Cristina and Alex to the food hall and winced slightly as she walked straight into the back of Alex.
“What the- guys, why have we stopped?” Izzie asked with a puzzled frown. She peered through the gap between her two colleagues and promptly mimicked their actions. She was frozen, rooted firmly to the spot, her mouth agape. Her lips began to flap as she struggled to formulate any words.
“Wow.” Cristina finally managed.
“Uh-huh.” Alex agreed, nodding his head slightly. Izzie continued to stare, her brain remained disengaged with her mouth, until she felt a sharp impact in her back. She spun around, ready to hurl abuse at her intruder.
“Jeez, Mer, watch where you’re going.”
“Hey Iz, how about you don’t block like the whole of the aisle?” Meredith retorted, she narrowed her eyes and tried to look beyond the other residents. “What were you looking at any- oh.”
“I think Meredith about sums this situation up.” Cristina commented dryly.
“What is she doing here?” Meredith asked.
“Hold on.” Cristina said, she began rummaging through her pockets, withdrawing them empty handed, “Nope, sorry, forgot my crystal ball today.” She stated.
“Iz?”
“What?” the blonde snapped.
“You’re her new best Bookface-“ Meredith started
“Facebook.” Alex corrected with a cough.
“Facebook buddy.”
“It doesn’t mean she tells me anything.” Izzie defended. She dared another look at the table where Addison was sat. Addison Montgomery. She still could not believe the neonatal surgeon was there, right in front of her and she hadn’t informed her of her pending arrival. Looking up amid all the commotion, the redhead caught a glimpse of the group of familiar faces. She sought out Izzie’s immediately and locked eyes with the blonde, a small teasing smile tugging at her lips. Izzie smiled shyly.
“Do you think we should go over?” Cristina asked.
“No, she’s with Bailey, I do not want to spend my lunch break with Bailey.” Alex answered.
“And I don’t want to spend mine with my boyfriend’s ex-wife.” Meredith stated with venom.
“Give her a break Meredith.” Izzie defended instantly.
“I should have expected you to be her knight in shining armour.” Izzie rolled her eyes at a her friend’s statement. “And what are you going to do Izzie?”
The blonde was torn, she really wanted to go over and say hello to Addison, yet her friends would be suspicious of her behaviour, ‘but it’s just being polite, right?’ the blonde thought. Swept up in confusion and actual disbelief that Addison was indeed in Seattle, she followed her friends wordlessly to the serving counter, offering a small apologetic smile over her shoulder at an understanding Addison Montgomery. She would have to make up for it later.
