Spoilers: No spoilers per se, just pretend Addison’s just moved to LA and everything with Izzie is hunky dory!

It was lunch time in Seattle, the sun was high and strong in the sky, there was barely a cloud, leaving a vast space of bright blue. Izzie squinted as she looked upwards, admiring the beautiful, rich colour of the sky. It was true, sunshine did make a positive difference to the day. She felt happy, content, she could barely keep the smile from her face.  The day had been better than yesterday, although it had ended rather positively. Ok, so that was also another reason for the blonde resident to be so happy today.  She smiled giddily to herself before releasing an almighty yawn. Despite the more than satisfactory exchange the previous night, Izzie was still relatively tired, she had worked some long days and had not had anywhere near the recommended numbers of hours of sleep. Izzie had finished the contents of her plate, the dish pushed aside with the knife and fork lying haphazardly across the middle. She sat back, slurping cola and scrolling wistfully through the text messages she had received from Addison the night before. So absorbed in the words before her, she barely noticed her friend sit down on the opposite side of the table.

“Hey Iz.”

“Oh hey Mer.”

“Everything ok?” Meredith asked.

“Yeah, everything’s fine.” Izzie replied with a smile and returned her focus to her cell phone. The sun hitting Meredith in the face before her reminded her of a little task she was yet to complete.  Opening her phone’s browser, she headed straight for the photo’s page on her Facebook profile.

“What you doing there?” her friend quizzed from across the table.

“Oh you know, just stuff.” Izzie responded noncommittally.

“That Bookface thing again.” Meredith groaned.

“Facebook.” Izzie corrected, looking up from her screen. “You should know by now.” The blonde berated.

“Of course. Silly me.” Meredith sighed, shovelling a forkful of food into her mouth.

The blonde continued with her mission, finding the picture she had sought, she opened it and re-read Addison’s comment. ‘I love this photo, your smile lights up your whole face x’. Smiling with a huge satisfied sigh she thought about how to respond.

‘I guess this is one of those times when I’m . . . nice ;-) x’

Pleased with her response, Izzie risked a look at her friend, feeling Meredith’s eyes burning a whole in the top of her head. She glanced up.

“What?” she smiled.

“Nothing.” Meredith said, chewing on the last of her mouthful. Izzie smirked. The blonde’s phone chirped in her hand, indicating the arrival of a new message. She raised her eyebrows suggestively at the brunette across from her, teasing her friend. Seeing the message was from Addison, her smile grew wider and opened the message with great anticipation, amazed by the timing of the message following the reply to the redhead’s comment.

A - Hey, how are you today? I hope you got enough sleep last night, sorry if I kept you up. A x

Izzie adored the caring nature of her new friend.

I - I had a great sleep thank you, a very interesting dream actually ;-) Iz x

The blonde sighed once again, happy with her response, but at the same time, slightly apprehensive at the thought of having taken it a step too far.

“Ok, it’s not nothing, are you seeing someone? Because you have that look.” Meredith said suspiciously.

“What look?” Izzie asked.

“You know, that dreamy one when someone you like sends you a text message.” Izzie had drifted off into another stupor. “There,” Meredith pointed, “That one.” Yet she received no response. Shaking the blonde from her reverie, her cell phone began to ring.

“Hey.” She answered, already aware of who her caller was.

“Hey yourself. You ok to talk?”

“Yeah, I’ve just finished my lunch and enjoying the sunshine.”

“Sunshine? A rarity for Seattle.” Addison feigned shock.

“Hey, it’s not so bad here.” The blonde defended with an exaggerated pout.

“I know, I guess since I moved here all I can remember of Seattle weather are the rain clouds.”

“I could see how that would work.” Izzie agreed.

“So are you going to tell me about this dream that was so interesting?” Addison asked suggestively.

“I would if I could, but I don’t think I can an answer that right now.” Izzie answered cryptically.

“Oh, you’re not alone.” The redhead realised.

“That is correct.”

“Arh, let me guess, Meredith?”

“Again you would be correct.” Izzie confirmed.

“Awkward.” Addison stated.

“Something like that.” The blonde laughed.

“So about that date?”

“Date?” Izzie asked, shooting her eyes upward upon remembering the presence of her friend.

“Yeah, the date you promised me last night. You know the one when you introduce me to that naughty girl.”

“Ooohhh, that date!” the blonde drawled.

“Don’t think I won’t take you up on it Stevens.”

Izzie grinned, “Of course.”

“And I’ll be a very, very good girl, just like you said.”

“You will?” Izzie blushed.

“Oh yeah. You know, you’re not very responsive.” Addison teased.

“You know why.” The blonde pointed out.

“Yes, Meredith, such a killjoy.” The redhead sighed.

Izzie laughed, “A little harsh don’t you think?”

“Erm, no.” Addison smiled. “I would just like to have a free and open conversation with you.”

“Me too.”

“There’s nothing stopping you.”

“I just don’t think it will be a good idea.” Izzie responded with a sigh. “Not with the history and everything. Besides, don’t you think it’s fun?”

“A clandestine friendship? Oh it’s awesome.” Addison said with a hint of sarcasm. Izzie sighed.

“I’m sorry.”

“Hey, no, look it’s fine, I can see how anyone, especially Meredith would find this sudden new friendship a little strange.” Addison reassured.

Izzie couldn’t help but wonder about Addison’s use of the word friendship. Well, it was true, that was effectively what they had at the moment, and she could not help her feelings and wanting so much more with the older woman.

“I sometimes have to pinch myself.” Izzie admitted quietly.

“Izzie, it was never completely beyond the realms of possibility, it was just bad timing. Facebook has a lot to be thankful for.”

“I agree with that.”

“We get on great, I could tell we could have been friends way back when, I always liked you Izzie.” Addison said, a serious yet genuine tone in her voice.

“You mean that?” the blonde asked, somewhat uncertainly.

“Yes, we get along great right now don’t we?”

“Yeah, we do.” The blonde grinned, Addison could hear the smile in her voice. “And I kinda liked you since I first met you too.” Izzie admitted coyly.

Addison sighed contendedly, “There you go being all nice again Stevens.”

“I’m only a naughty girl on special occasions.” The resident giggled.

“I’ll remember that. But it’s nice, caring beautiful Izzie who caught my attention in the first place.”

“Seriously? You think I’m beautiful?” Izzie asked excitedly, she dared a glance at Meredith who was so obviously trying her best to show she was not listening, when clearly she was.

“There’s no question, that picture I commented on was just stunning.”

“Thank you.” Izzie smiled with a blush.

“You’re welcome.” Addison offered.

“I’m being watched.” The blonde said, staring at Meredith from across the table.

“I’m not surprised, I’d be watching you too if I could.” Addison laughed, “Poor Meredith, if only she knew who was on the other end of this call.”

“I think I’d be called for a resuscitation.” The resident laughed.

“Haha, what’s she doing now? Is she doing that frowny face, wondering what’s being said?”

“Spot on.” Izzie giggled.

“Is she looking paranoid?”

“Very.” Izzie was still looking at Meredith, making the other woman seemingly uncomfortable.

“Excellent.” The resident watched as her colleague skulked away, carrying her tray, and tail between her legs.

“She’s gone now.” Izzie reported.

“Phew.”

“Hey, you’re not the one who’s going to be facing a barrage of questions later.”

“This is true.”

“So what are you upto anyway? You at work?”

“Yep, just hanging out in the office.”

“You busy?”

“I’m between patients.”

“Must be a dream to have patients with scheduled appointments.”

“It’s not as unpredictable as working in a hospital that’s for sure, although performing surgery after surgery began to be a little repetitive.”

Izzie sighed, “I wish you were here, I miss you around the place.”

“Aw, that’s the nicest thing anyone’s said to me in a long time.”

“I don’t believe that.” Izzie said quietly.

“Ok, the nicest thing that anyone has said and meant it without hitting on me.”

“How do you know I’m not hitting on you?” Izzie laughed.

“Because you have more style and class than that.” Addison replied.

“There you go with your compliments again.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be, I just, I’m not used to it I guess.” The blonde sighed.

“Then I’m going to make sure you do get used it.”

“Thank you Addison, you always know the right thing to say.”

“Oh I try.” The redhead laughed. “Wait is that a pager?” Addison said, hearing a distant beeping.

“Oh, I’m sorry, yeah it’s my pager.” Izzie paused a moment to look at the screen.  “I have to go. I’ll text you later.” She continued as she walked towards the hospital doors.

“Ok, nice talking to you. Take care Izzie.”

“You too Addison. Bye.”

“Bye.”

Izzie crossed the threshold and broke out into a trot and headed straight for the stairs, pocketing her phone as she went. Holding her stethoscope down, she took two steps at a time until she reached her intended floor, not giving a second thought to the conversation that had just transpired.

Later that day, as the sun was setting over the Seattle skyline, Izzie returned home. It was something of a relief to actually be home before the sun had set and the darkness rolled in. Desperate for a beer, the blonde dumped her bag in the hallway and headed straight for the kitchen, head down she hurried to her intended destination and opened the refrigerator. Hanging one arm over the door she bent over and searched for the six pack she had purchased earlier that week in anticipation of the need to relax at some point. Taking a can, she pulled it from the fridge and opened it immediately. The resident stood, taking a swig and closing the door simultaneously, sighing with great satisfaction as the first of the amber nectar poured coolly down her throat. Looking up she was met with a death glare in the gloominess of the room.

“Jeez Mer, what the hell do you think you’re doing?”

“Hello Izzie.”

“Seriously Meredith, what the hell? Have you been watching slasher movies again?”

“Funny, Izzie.” Meredith said dryly, her arms crossed over her chest. “So, who is it?”

“Who is what?” Izzie said, avoiding Meredith’s gaze.

“You know full well what I am talking about. You are dating someone and I want to know who it is.”

“Have you listened to yourself Mer? I am not dating anyone and if I were it’s none of your business and I would tell you in my own time.”

“I don’t believe you. I heard you on your cell phone at lunch time, I saw the way you reacted to what was being said.”

“Stalker much?” Izzie hissed. She took another sip of her drink, feeling the sudden urge to quell her anger. “Seriously? I do not want to hear this.”

“Who was on the phone?”

“Oh so you are capable of listening to a private conversation but when someone actually directs words at you, you ignore them!” Izzie spat.

“Well?”

“Well, you are not doing yourself any favours and the more you press, the more I’ll resist. So can it Meredith.” The blonde insisted, she closed her mouth and used her hand to indicate a zipping motion.  Meredith’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re so childish.” Izzie’s response was to widen her eyes and shake her head, afterall, she had just zipped her mouth closed. “Fine, whatever, I’ll go stalk your Bookface thing instead, you spend more time on that than with your real friends.” Meredith turned and flounced out of the room

“Good luck finding the power button Grey.” Izzie sang after her. She was right, Meredith’s questioning would be unbearable. She sighed and picked up her cell phone, she had a text message to send.
