Part 11 The blonde stirred as she felt the vibrating beneath her, she had just rested her eyes for a few minutes, but she had inadvertently fallen asleep. Izzie berated herself as she fished around beneath her body for her cell phone. She knew who it was before even looking at the display, she had been expecting the call. Izzie retrieved the phone and hit the button as she pushed it to her ear.
“Hello?” she said sleepily into the handset. Although she had a reasonably good idea who it was, she answered with her automatic greeting.
“Hey, someone sounds sleepy.”
“Hi.” Izzie grinned, she rolled over onto her back on the sofa, her eyes were closed, her grin stretched from ear to ear upon hearing her lover’s voice again. “Well someone kept me up all night.” She cooed into the mouthpiece.
“Oh really? We can’t have that now can we?” Addison replied with a hint of amusement in her voice.
“Hmmm,” Izzie pondered, “I think we can, it was totally worth it.” She smiled.
“Anyone I know?” Addison asked with a smirk.
“Oh I think you might know her, she’s pretty spectacular in every way.”
“She sounds special.”
“She really is.” Izzie sighed with smile.
“You sound happy.” Addison stated.
“All the better for hearing your voice.” The blonde said. “How was your flight?”
“It was quick, I slept most of it.” The redhead admitted. Izzie giggled, she could have the same conversation all over again with the roles reversed but she let it go, brief visuals of the previous night flashing through her mind.
“I miss you already.” Izzie admitted.
“Me too, but you know, just hearing your voice is a great remedy.” Addison offered.
“Yeah, we can do this, this is fine. What would be worse would not be having you in my life at all.” Izzie explained.
“You know one of the advantages of being away from each other is keeping it fresh. Just think how special and exciting our reunions will be.”
“I don’t think we’ll leave the bed.”
“I don’t know,” Addison began, “I’m rather fond of the bath, the shower, the hot tub . . .”
“You seem to have penchant for being wet Dr Montgomery.” Izzie said in her best seductive voice.
“Don’t use that tone Izzie,” Addison warned, “and say things like that,” she continued, “because you have no idea the effect you have on me Dr Stevens.” The redhead breathed.
“I imagine it may be the same effect you have on me.” Izzie offered. “You leave me breathless, make me weak at the knees and my heart races beyond belief. The best doctor in the world can’t cure that, because as long as you’re in my life, I don’t think it’ll ever stop.” Izzie stated.
“Izzie.” Addison sighed, “You’re not making this easy.”
“I don’t intend to.” The blonde answered honestly.
“You’re incredible.” Addison laughed, “in every single way. Don’t ever change Iz.”
“Anything for you.” Izzie stated with simplicity. She lay still, her hand on her stomach, her eyes were still closed, imagining Addison was laying beside her, her feet hung from the end of the couch and she would occasionally cross and uncross her feet at the ankle.
“You make it so easy and so hard for me Miss Stevens.” Addison said.
“Miss? Have I been demoted?” Izzie quizzed.
“The opposite.” Addison replied, “I’m making it personal now Izzie.” Explained the redhead.
“I like it.” Izzie said. “Although I still get a thrill when you just call me Stevens.” She smiled. Addison laughed in response.
“It’s that whole teacher/student, attending/intern thing isn’t it?”
“Busted. Oh some of the fantasies I used to have . . .” the blonde pondered aloud.
“Izzie.” Addison warned once again.
“Ok, I’m sorry.” Izzie apologised. “I am not looking forward to work tomorrow.” She said changing the subject, maybe a bit of mundane conversation was what they both needed right now, getting each other worked up was not a good idea.
“Why?” Addison asked with concern.
“Alex has been a bit too friendly toward me lately.” Izzie explained. “He’s made me uncomfortable a few times.” She said.
“I don’t like the sound of that.” Addison stated. “Just tell him about us, seriously, just tell him and hopefully he’ll back the hell off.”
“Thanks.” Izzie replied, “I will. This is so awesome, I can’t wait to tell people. Cristina was so cool.”
“Not everyone will react like Cristina did Izzie, just be careful.”
“You know what? I don’t care what people think, I can handle any backlash Addie and besides, it’s not my problem it’s theirs.” She rambled.
“I think it’ll be harder for me.” Addison began, “Not because I’m with you and I don’t want to tell people, because I really do, it’s just, some of my friends here I’ve known since college and there are expectations and this will really be a bolt from the blue.” She explained.
“Hey it’s ok.” Izzie said, “I understand. It’s so new anyway, you tell who you want and when you want, I’m with you one hundred per cent.” The blonde offered.
“Thank you.” The redhead replied sweetly, “Another reason why you are so awesome.”
“I do try.” Izzie joked. The blonde yawned.
“You should get to bed, if you’re not already there.” Addison suggested.
“I’m on the sofa, it’s not that comfortable.”
“Go to bed Izzie. I’ll go too.” The redhead’s statement, although short, was loaded with underlying meanings.
“Ok.” Izzie agreed. “I will speak to you tomorrow.”
“Yes you will. I have to be in work at 9.30 in the morning, but I will be up at 7 if you want to call before work.” Addison suggested
“I start at 7, I might just text you.” Izzie smiled at her girlfriend’s thoughtfulness.
“Alright then.” Addison agreed, “Thank you for the best weekend.” Addison said, “Goodnight Izzie.”
“You’re welcome, sweet dreams Addison.” Izzie said and hit the call end button, she sighed heavily and threw her arm over her eyes, blocking out the light. The blonde heard a rattling coming from the kitchen, followed by her stomach growling. Looking at her watch, she realised it had been hours since she last ate anything and so decided to go and investigate and make herself a sandwich before heading up for bed.
She padded through the house and cautiously peered through the kitchen door. She sighed with relief when she recognised the derrière protruding from the open refrigerator door.
“Hey Mer.” Izzie said loudly as she plonked herself on a stool. Upon the sudden sound of Izzie’s voice, the other girl inadvertently jumped, banging her head on the top of the fridge as she did so.
“Jeez, Iz, don’t sneak up like that.” Meredith chastised rubbing her head.
“I’m sorry.” The blonde said. She picked a banana from the fruit bowl before her and unpeeled it.
“You were on the cell when I came in.”
“Ok.” Izzie said before snatching a bite of the fruit in her hand.
“I heard some of what you said.” Meredith said, fishing for more information.
“Ok.” Said Izzie once again with a shrug, the word escaping her full mouth.
“I know that you slept with her, but you’re dating Addison aren’t you? It’s more than just sex.” Meredith said, watching Izzie intently across the work surface. The blonde gave nothing away, she looked at Meredith and shrugged her shoulders.
“Yeah.” She stated nonchalantly, before swallowing the mouthful of banana she had in her mouth.
“Yeah?” Meredith repeated.
“Yeah.” Izzie confirmed. “I’m dating Addison.”
“Wow.” The other girl stated.
“Yeah.” Izzie said once again. “I am dating Addison Montgomery.” She smiled.
“This isn’t going to make things awkward is it?”
“For who? For you? Because I really don’t think it’s gonna be awkward for either of us.” The blonde smiled.
“Well you know, with Derek and everything . . .” Meredith trailed off.
“Mer, they’re divorced, they’ve both moved on and they’re adults. Besides, I don’t think we’ll be spending much time here. Not outside of the bedroom or the bathroom anyway.” She smirked.
“Eww Izzie.”
“What? Addison is totally hot, with a smoking body and she is totally amazing in bed.” Izzie gushed.
“You’re making it sound like it is just about sex.” Meredith stated.
“It’s not, I swear, she’s wow,” Izzie began, “she’s everything I could want in a partner.” The blonde explained. “I feel like this is it, that she’s someone so incredibly special and we just click, there’s so much chemistry and I don’t ever want her to not be in my life.”
“Wow,” exclaimed Meredith, “I’m really happy for you Iz, it’s about time you found someone like that.”
“And she was there all the time.”
“Sometimes that’s just how it is.” Meredith replied.
“Yeah, thanks for the insight Oprah.” Izzie laughed.
“How are you going to cope with her being away?” Meredith said, ignoring the jibe from her friend.
Izzie shrugged, “It’ll be hard, but we’ll deal with it, we’re going to see each other at least once a fortnight.”
“That’s twice a month.” Meredith surmised.
“Yeah, it sucks.”
“That’s like twenty four times in a year.” The mousy brown haired doctor worked out.
“Yes, ok, I know. Don’t make this any harder.”
“Well, you know, you’re still getting to know each other properly, it’s not like you’ve been dating for months. Just see how it goes.” Meredith suggested.
“And that’s what we’re going to do.” Izzie smiled. “I’m happy you’re ok with this.”
“I’m happy you’re happy, and when you’re getting laid, you’re happy.” Meredith stated.
Izzie smiled widely. “I’m more than getting laid and I’m more than happy.” She explained.
“That’s great Izzie.”
“Thanks Mer. I’m going to bed now, I have a lot of sleep I need to catch up on.” She said as she rose. She tossed the banana skin in the trash can and turned to hug her friend. “Thanks again.” She said as she squeezed her friend tightly.

It was early, Izzie was still half asleep as she did rounds, her interns taking the brunt of her lack of sleep. The blonde sighed with relief as she exited the room of the last patient. She needed a coffee and quickly. Making her way to the cafeteria, she glanced at her watch, 7.45am, only ten more hours to go. She sighed heavily and sauntered up to the serving counter, collecting and paying for her coffee. The blonde decided to sit down for five minutes, she was tired, she deserved the break, even if it was only forty five minutes into her shift, there was no doubt she would make up for it later. She took out her cell phone, she had said to Addison the previous night she would text her, but as she found herself alone and on an early break she hit dial, a smile tugging at her lips in anticipation of hearing the other woman’s voice. Her stomach flipped as the ringing tone kicked in and seemed like an eternity before it ended and the call was answered.
“Hello?” Came the voice from the other end. Izzie completely froze, thrown off kilter.
“Err hi, is Addison there?” she asked, she was pretty sure she had dialled Addison’s number, but the male voice on the other end of the line had her doubting herself.
“Erm, Addie can’t come to the phone right now, she’s dressing for work.” Izzie could hear the smirk in the guy’s voice. Her heart dropped, her hands were shaking. She could feel the tears in her eyes threatening to spill. The blonde took a deep breath and composed herself.
“Who is this?” she asked with as much authority as she could muster.
“Pete. Who’s this?”
“Izzie.” She replied, her voice barely able to say anything else. “Can you tell her I called?”
“Yeah, yeah sure,” he said in a rushed tone, “look I gotta go.” And with that he hung up.
Pete, Izzie thought, he was the guy Addison was on the phone to the other day, the one she had said was pestering her to go out with him, who she had previously had a ‘thing’ with. The initial upset had dissipated somewhat. Izzie Stevens was now angry, God forbid if anyone should cross her path today.
