As some of you undoubtedly have noticed,
gardening is getting a little bit of a face lift!
Over the next week you'll see tweaks of color, image, and layout. I donated 2 months of paid time to the community, which will allow us to customize our appearance and include a few additional features.
Most importantly though- tags are up for
gardening!
Tags are one of the easiest ways for users to find what questions have already been answered. Only mods can create tags for this community, but all users can apply them. Please try to tag all your posts. Likewise, if you see any post that does not have tags or that seems to need another tag, please add it!
The easiest way to tag a post you are making is to publish your post and then on the "post submitted" page click the "edit this entry's tags" link. You can edit tags by clicking the "edit tags" link in the meta-data (where the comments, link, etc. are displayed) of a post.
An alphabetical list of tags appears in the sidebar. If you have a post which needs a tag which does not exist, please tag it with the "tag request" tag. Any post which requires attention from a moderator should be tagged with "to the mods". Community updates, announcements, etc. will be tagged as "mod post".
Why are tags helpful? Tags are like memories on steroids. They allow everyone, new and old, to search for the information they are seeking quickly and efficiently. They help everyone learn. They save us precious space on our friends pages and prevent repetitive stress in our scrolling fingers.
As for whether or not tags are REQUIRED of you- no, they aren't. We're not about to turn on moderation of posts over tagging, and we're not going to delete your un-tagged posts. Is it really awfully nice of you to tag your post? Sure is! Is it super sweet and special of you to tag others posts? Definitely!
I'll keep my eyes on the comments to this post- I welcome your thoughts and criticism on the layout and changes going on. I'm doing all of this for the sake of all you lovely users, not for myself. I want to know what you all think!
