While "Living Conditions" isn't exactly on the top of anybody's hate-list, I've seen it listed quite a few times on lists of "Worst Episodes of Buffy Ever" so I figure I'd give it a little plug. Season Four of Buffy started off pretty much mirroring my freshman year of college which was a little creepy and touching and far too close to home all at once. "Living Conditions" is one of the episodes that made me glad that I actually hadn't watched Buffy until after I had graduated from undergrad. I was already delusional enough as a freshman and living in fictions I had created in my head so that I could escape from the reality of my situation. I had a roommate (and six suitemates) from hell. Showing me a soul-sucking roommate from hell literally probably would have sent me over the metaphorical edge. The metaphors for life just remain so perfect, so subtle, and so blatant all at once that the show seriously sucks you in and never lets you go. People who hate this episode either never went to college or lived with friends and/or people they could tolerate. Because, soul-sucking demon roommate? That's another thing to check off the list of "How Buffy is My Life on Television." And she did it six or seven years before I did.
