My librarian heart died and went to a heavenly dimension the second this man appeared on screen. Giles is smart, funny, snarky, sexy (yes, he is, do not deny), British, a librarian, stuffy, and a huge papa bear to Buffy's gang. He appeared, I fell in love, and I continued to watch the show. He is pretty much what kept me going past Season One, and remained my favorite character even through the comics, which is astounding since he hardly had a part in the comics at all. All anybody had to do to get on my fictional hit list was threaten, harm, or maim Giles. I was ready to axe Willow at the end of Season Six. My Willow! She was going to go down. Nothing trumps my love for Giles. You can imagine who I wish would turn to dust at the moment. At any rate, I loved that Giles was so brilliant and I loved how, despite how futile it was, he continued to try and guide Buffy and helped her to the best of his ability--even when it was no longer his job. I love how, should the situation call for it, he was a pretty good demon fighter in his own right and he never hesitated to use his skills. I love how he had a troubled youth and a questionable past. I pretty much love anything and everything to do with Giles. He made me mad one time in Seven Seasons and a comic book run. When? Well... when he did it was when I knew for sure that Giles was no longer alone at the top.
He shared that spot with Spike. When Spike and Drusilla show up in Season Two is when this show gets good. Their personalities and character dynamic are fantastic and they are both so much fun to watch. I think, to begin with, I was far more in love with Drusilla than Spike (I really have a thing for crazy people) but he was definitely adored. When he came back in Season Three for one episode was when it became clear just why I loved him so much. He was that one character who you could throw in the path of all the others and derail their entire lives without so much as trying. Spike is just like that. As a regular in Season Four he handily replaced both Angel and Cordelia and I loved him so much that I managed to struggle through the terribleness that is Season Four. That's right--Spike managed to make up for the Initiative, Riley, floundering Xander, and aimless Giles. He is that awesome. His obsessive-stalker phase in Season Five made me love him even more, mostly because I have a habit of falling in love with people who are completely out of my league and he, at least, had the (deranged) courage to go for it. In Season Five, Spike was handily replacing everything I missed and counteracting everything that I hated (to include Dawn,
see yesterday's rant.) Season Six had all manner of crazy, confused, and incredibly screwed up romantic plots that he carried off both sympathetically, and menacingly. Literally, I have like six essays planned that revolve around Spike. The nature of the soul in regards to good and evil, Buffyverse vampirism and the original personality, Spike the Gothic Victorian Hero... seriously, contrasting Spike to Angel is probably the most fascinating theoretical exercise in the whole Buffyverse. It's Spike that kept me watching past Seasons Four and Five to the glorious Six and Seven (I am waiting for the flames on that one). By the end, he was making up for the lack of Giles to the point where I could watch the show without pain. Spike remains the one and only character who ever made me cry without dying (and he did that too). He always kept things interesting.
So, I always have this imaginary scenario in my head where I let characters fight and whoever I love the most comes out on top. In this case, they would be fighting for eternity because whoever hurt the other one would piss me off, but I couldn't hate them because I love them so and back and forth. Spike and Giles are just tied. End of story.
