Last time…

“And today on ‘Celebrity News’…”

Hyde shook out some of the water from the ends of his hair as he had a cigarette on the veranda.

“The rumors of L’Arc~en~Ciel bandleader Tetsu and idol talent Ayana and their plans to get married….the story that we’ve been running and following for-“

Hyde walked over to the television dully and pulled the plug out.

That’s it…No more…

He kicked a pillow on the carpet to the side on his way to the kitchen, where he rummaged in one of the drawers until he found what he was looking for.  He retrieved thick strands of pristine white fibers twisted together and wound up into a coil.  Hyde grabbed one of the overturned stools from the kitchen floor and carried it together to the far end of the living room where the ceiling was lower.

Most of the ground level of Tetsu’s house had a high ceiling except for one corner that had always seemed out of place.  This corner was slightly lower and had several beams running across the ceiling.  Hyde had never been certain why only one area of the living room was architecturally different.

Hyde set the stool in the middle next to the sliding door and took off his house slippers, arranging them neatly in front of the stool.  He climbed the rungs and stood on the seat, where he was able to throw the coil over the lowest ceiling beam and secure one end to the sliding door handle.  He threaded the other end over and around itself, securing the knot.

Hyde looked down at the digital clock sitting on the coffee table facing him.  It was a modern one with everything on it from the date, time, weather, humidity, and LED lights that did a light show on the hour.

2009 MAR 20 14:59:23.

Nearly three in the afternoon....

Hyde placed the loop over his neck and stood still at the top of his stool.

14:59:39…14:59:46…14:59:52…

Hyde closed his eyes and took a deep breath before checking the clock one last time.

14:59:56…57…58…59…

Hyde kicked the tall stool out from under him.  Gravity pulled him down, the noose tightened, and Hyde hung suspended half a meter above the ground.

15:00:00. Game…over.  I…give…up…

Good Morning, Mr. Hyde, Today I’m Gonna Rock Your World - Chapter 18

14:57 pm…

Ken had been in the area and decided to pay Tetsu a visit.  Last time he had recalled that Hyde had been worried about Tetsu, so Ken figured there would be no harm in checking up on Tetsu.  When he got to the house, he walked straight up the path, but he noticed that the plants on the side of the house were brown and dying.  Ken walked around the house, thinking that he would check to see if one of the sprinklers were broken.  He scaled the fence and tumbled over with a thud.

I’m getting too old for this, stupid bastard…

Ken walked up to the veranda and was about to lift the leaves to see if one of the sprinklers was busted, but he saw movement in the window and looked up.  He saw Hyde standing on a stool with his back to the window, oblivious to the fact that the curtains were not drawn.

Odd…what’s he doing on a stool over there?

Ken lifted his hand to wave to Hyde, but before he could catch the vocalist’s attention, he saw Hyde’s leg swing and knock the stool over.  Hyde’s body jerked up and when it stayed in suspension, Ken ran up to the sliding door.

“Hyde!” Ken yelled, banging on the glass.

When he saw that Hyde was hanging like a rag doll from the ceiling beams, he grabbed the table next to the lawn chairs and smashed it through the door, causing broken glass to fly everywhere.

“Hyde! I’m coming!” Ken shouted, pushing his way through the shattered glass door.

Ken grabbed his keys from his pocket and flipped out the blade from his Swiss army knife.  He clambered onto the stool and cut the rope, dropping Hyde’s body to the ground.

Hyde felt himself jerk and no sooner had his world gone dark, he felt himself fall and gasp for air.

“Hyde!  Hyde!” Ken said, shaking Hyde, who was gagging.

Ken flipped Hyde over.

“Ken…?” Hyde moaned, his vision blurred as the oxygen rushed to his brain.

“What the hell, Hyde?!  What do you think you’re doing?!  You trying to kill yourself?!”

“Yes!” Hyde screamed, grabbing Ken’s knife and preparing to stab himself in the chest.  “So fuck off!”

“Are you nuts?!  Gimme that!” Ken yelled, wrestling the knife from Hyde’s grasp.

“No!  Let go of me!!” shrieked Hyde, climbing all over Ken in a wild attempt to grab the knife back.

“Shut up!  Have you fallen off your rocker?!” Ken shouted, throwing the knife to the side.

Hyde watched the knife sail over the stool and land with a clatter on the coffee table.

“Hyde-oof” Ken choked when Hyde stood up, pushed him out of the way, and chased after the knife.  “Get back over here!”

Ken scrambled after Hyde and grabbed his ankle, yanking him back.

“LET ME GO!” Hyde screamed, flailing his arms as Ken pinned him to the floor.

Powerless to move, Hyde began banging the back of his head on the floor in a hysteric tantrum.

“Hyde! STOP THAT!” yelled Ken, pulling Hyde up by the shoulders to prevent him from bruising his head on the floor further.

“Fuck off!  Leave me alone!  Why won’t you let me die?!”

“Shut up!  Don’t even go there!  You’re like family to me and you expect me to just sit back and let you kill yourself?!”

“Yes!  It’s my life!”

“Well, what about ME?!”

“What about YOU?!  This doesn’t affect you!  I’m not trying to kill YOU; I’m trying to kill ME!”

“Don’t be selfish, Hyde-“

“I…don’t….care…let…me…GO!!”

“Calm down!  And stop trying to bang your head on the floor!”

“Calm down?!  Are you fuckin’ kidding me?!  No way!!  I can’t take it anymore! I’m done living in pain!  I don’t’ wanna live anymore!”

“Don’t say that!  I’m sure you don’t mean that-”

“I do, Ken.  I can’t take any of this anymore!  The pain! The loneliness!  I’m better off dead!!”

“Listen to yourself!  Pull yourself together!  Do you hear yourself?!”

“Yes!  That’s why let me be!  Let me die in peace!”

“Like hell!  I can’t let you!  I won’t let you!” Ken pulled Hyde in a fierce embrace.

“I can’t do this, Ken,” sobbed Hyde, clinging to Ken’s shirt and burying his face into Ken’s chest.

“If I let you die, Tetsu would kill me,” Ken said gently, embracing Hyde’s frail body.

“Tetsuuuuuuuuu!!!” wailed Hyde.

“Hyde…”

“He left me, Ken.  Tetsu left me-“ Hyde said frantically.

“What are you talking about?  Pull yourself together-“

“Pull myself together?!  PULL MYSELF TOGETHER?!!  Ken, I have nothing to live for.  My wife divorced me, took Rei and most of my money as part of the settlement.  I’ve been living with my lover, Tetsu, for the past year, half of which I spent in a coma as a result of some freak accident of me being hit by some drunk driver, a coma that might I add, I had very little chance of waking up from…and when I woke up, I had no memory and I had to do physical therapy so that I could regain the range of motion that I once had.  You would have thought that with all we’ve been through thus far, we deserve a break from being fate’s punching bag.  The challenges that we have had to face in the last year as lovers were things that couples pray they will never have to face.  I have no living family, and just when I think we finally have a chance at happiness, something goes wrong with his hands unbeknownst to me.  He collapses and runs off the first chance he gets-not with another woman or man, but just abandons his shit overnight.  No one knows where he’s gone and no one seems perturbed that his whereabouts are unknown…I’ve just lost the only thing I had going for me in my life.  So, no, Ken, I’m sorry I can’t bounce back like you.  Frankly, I don’t even feel like living anymore.  I think I might wither away before the end of the 3 year hiatus.  I don’t even know if he’s still alive.”

“Hyde…”

“Ken, Tetsu was my entire existence and now that he’s gone, I can’t move on with my life.  If he were dead or just sleeping with someone else, that would be one thing.  But no one knows where he is.  He told me goodbye on a memory chip stuck in the television.  No explanation, just ‘Goodbye, Hyde…”

Ken watched as Hyde’s frail body shook from the sobs.

“If Tetsu was by my side, I felt like I could overcome anything.  I felt like I could do anything.  But now…he’s not here.  I feel like I can’t even bring myself to get up in the morning.  I don’t want to live in a world where I can’t be at his side!  How many months has it been since I’ve managed to continue to believe…like an idiot…waiting in this stupidly large house, in his stupidly large bed, crying myselt to sleep every night…stupidly believing that he would someday come back…”

“Don’t say that…”

“But it was in vain!  I can’t keep this up for much longer.  Even if you tell me to pull myself together, I can’t.  The loneliness, it’s killing me.  I’ve sunk to the bottom of the whirlpool.  Don’t get me wrong, Ken.  I’m thankful for your concern, but please, I don’t want to be saved this time.  Please, don’t save me…”

“I’m sure he’ll come back to you-”

“Ken, get real.  No one knows where he is.  He could be dead in a ditch somewhere for all we know.”

“That’s true, but-“

“If he died in a car accident or from illness, I think that it would be hard, but I would be able to one day accept his death.  But the way things are-all these unknown variables, not knowing if he’s alive, I’m just…I can’t move forward.  I cling to the hope that he will one day come back like a drowning man will cling to a piece of straw…I’m like a lost boy…I don’t know where to go, what I should do.  I have so much time that I don’t even know what to do with! KEN!  Tell me what I should do!  Because I don’t wanna live anymore!”

“Hyde.”

“TELL ME!!!”

Ken was silent as he looked at the broken man before him.  Hyde’s bony shoulders dug into his chest as Hyde sobbed into his hands.

“What about a song?” Ken responded as he stood up and carried Hyde over to the couch.

“Huh?”

Ken walked over to the closet and brought out a broom and dust pan.

“It’s unlikely that Tetsu has left the country,” said Ken, sweeping up the shattered glass into a pile.  “He’s probably somewhere in Japan either moping about or trying to fix his hands.  Write him a song and tell him how you feel.  Tetsu’s not a mountain man.  He likes his hot running water and internet access.  It’s hard to envision him without access to even a television.  If you put something out and promote it heavily, he’d have to be blind and deaf not to notice.  Use all your connections.  Music Station, Utaban, Heyx3…Take out a giant ad at Tsutaya and HMV.  Stores will play your song because you’re Hyde….”

Ken shook the shards from the dustpan into a paper bag.

“If there’s anything that could reach him, that would definitely be it,” sighed Ken, crumpling the opening over the paper bag and returning the broom and dustpan to the closet.  “You say you love him, Hyde, but how far will you go to get him back?  If it were Tetsu in your place, do you think he’d be as half-assed as you in searching for his missing lover?”

Ken stopped in front of Hyde and stared down into Hyde’s eyes.

“If you want to kill yourself, I won’t stop you next time.  In fact I dare you to.  Take your life if you know in your heart that you’ve said all you’ve wanted to say to him.  If you know your death will be a peaceful one with no regrets and no chains binding you to the present…Tetsu believed in you when you were in a coma.  He believed that you would come back to him despite the odds.  He protected you when he should have turned off the life support according to your wishes.  He protected you because he believed that you were worth saving.  If you can take the life that he clearly loved so dearly and so desperately fought to protect, then go right ahead.  I won’t stop you.  Just make sure you let me know when you decide to do it so I can call someone to pronounce you dead.  As you said, it’s your life.  I’ll have someone come down this evening to fix the sliding door I broke.  Good night.”

Ken shrugged and walked to the front door, closing it behind him and leaving Hyde in the quiet, dark, spacious home to contemplate what may very well be his final words to the lead vocalist.
