When they got to the house, Tetsu immediately went downstairs.
“Where are you going?” asked Hyde, following Tetsu to the staircase.
“Downstairs to practice,” Tetsu called from the bottom of the stairs.
“But it’s already 9:30…”
“I know, but I’ll be quiet. You can go to sleep if you’re tired.”
Hyde stared down the dark staircase, half expecting Tetsu to come back up to him, but he did not. Hyde shuffled about the house for about twenty minutes before he decided to take a bath. He made sure it was a long bath so that by the time that he came out, Tetsu would be on the bed waiting for him.
Hyde emerged nearly an hour later, but there was no sign of Tetsu. Sighing in disappointment, Hyde walked downstairs to the music room and stopped in front of the door, which was slightly ajar.
Hyde expected to hear Tetsu playing his bass, but he heard Tetsu playing the keyboard. Pushing the door open quietly, Hyde stood in the doorway and saw that Tetsu had been practicing his bass as it was on its stand next to him. Tetsu’s back was to the door and Hyde watched in amazement as Tetsu played song after song from memory. From ‘Blurry Eyes’ to ‘Jojoushi’ to ‘Niji’ and ‘Flower’, Tetsu appeared to remember each as if he had been practicing it for years. As Hyde listened to the melodies, it struck him as being familiar, but he did not remember half of the words. Embarrassed at his own inability to remember the words and music, Hyde closed the door and was determined not to make a fool of himself on Tuesday.
Hyde walked back upstairs to the computer that Tetsu had in his old room. As Hyde waited for it to start up, he took out the paper he had in his pocket and looked at the song list that Ken had wrote. Hyde pulled a binder off the shelf above the desk and flipped through the pages.
Kimi ni nemuru shihaisha wa …ima mo mukuchi na mama no lies…
Hyde sighed as he put the headphones and started the default music program. When the songs finished loading, Hyde clicked on the song ‘Lies and Truth’ and began the long process of re-associating the lyrics with the music, mouthing the words as he listened to his own voice sing the song that he himself had written so many years ago.

“FUCK! FUCK! FUCK!” Tetsu shouted in frustration, pulling at his hair.
It was now three in the morning and Tetsu was frustrated that his fingers were not behaving. When he came home with Hyde, his original plan had been to practice for a few hours. He went downstairs and had warmed up as he usually did. However, not twenty minutes into his practice session, his shoulder was throbbing and his fingers were so sore they felt swollen and numb. Figuring it was just from not having practiced in awhile, he set his bass down and went over the songs on the keyboard to make sure he knew the songs.
Playing the keyboard did not hurt as much and seemed to alleviate the strain he felt when he gripped the neck of his bass and held his pick. But after nearly two hours of piano, he felt like he was ready to play his bass-only his fingers would not do as his brain asked. He knew what sound should be coming out of his beloved stringed instrument, but what came out was the clumsy twang that it used to make when he was first learning to play the bass. His fingers were stumbling all over the frets and his entire arm hurt from strumming. This went on until he was shaking so much that he could not even hold the pick properly.
Tetsu punched a cushion and found his fist radiating with pain. It was not his style to leave things out before he went to bed, but his arms and hands hurt so much that he went upstairs to the kitchen, where he kept his one bottle of aspirin. Swallowing two with a large glass of water, he was about to place the glass in the sink when his wrist suddenly felt weak and he watched as the glass fell in slow motion, shattering on the marble surface of the sink.
Hyde awoke with a start from the sound of glass shattering. He turned and found that Tetsu had not come to bed yet. Running out into the hall, he saw the kitchen light on.
“Tetsu!” he said, bursting in.
“Don’t come near here!” Tetsu shouted, causing Hyde to halt in his tracks. “Sorry…I mean, I dropped a glass in the sink and there’s some glass on the floor”
Tetsu opened the drawer next to him to pull out a mini broom and dust pan. Hyde watched as Tetsu swept up the glass on the floor. There was a particularly large shard at the edge of the sink that Tetsu apparently did not see as he scratched his hand against it when he stood up.
“Tetsu,” Hyde said, running to get some house slippers from the guest room and running back to Tetsu. “Are you all right?”
“I’m fine,” Tetsu said, trying to turn on the water with his other hand.
“Here, let me get that for you,” Hyde said, turning the water and running Tetsu’s bloody hand under it.
Hyde grabbed a paper towel and pat Tetsu’s hand dry, applying pressure to stop the bleeding. When the bleeding stopped, Hyde opened the cupboard to get out the first aid kit.
“There you go,” Hyde said, finishing the dressing for the wound.
“Sorry I woke you,” Tetsu apologized.
“Why don’t you go get ready for bed? I’ll clean this up,” Hyde said, shooing Tetsu in the direction of their bedroom.
“Sorry…” Tetsu bowed and excused himself.
Hyde appeared a few minutes later and jumped on the bed next to Tetsu.
“Are you alright?” Hyde asked with concern in his voice, snuggling into Tetsu.
“Yeah, I’m sorry,” Tetsu said quietly, looking away from Hyde.
“Be careful, Tetsu…” said Hyde, taking Tetsu’s hand in his own and kissing it lightly.
“Yeah, I will,” Tetsu said, kissing Hyde on the forehead as he closed his eyes.

When Tetsu woke up the next morning, both his hands were numb and he sat up shaking them profusely to get the circulation flowing to them. Looking at the clock, it was almost ten in the morning-he was already behind schedule.
“Oh, Tetsu. You’re awake,” Hyde said looking up from the table. “Let me get your breakfast on the table.”
“I went to the market and got some salmon for breakfast,” Hyde said, placing Tetsu’s portion on a long plate next to the miso soup and rice.
Hyde opened the refrigerator and took out the plate of pickled vegetables he had prepared earlier. Placing them on the tray, he brought everything over to Tetsu with a pair of chopsticks.
“Did you want coffee? Tea? Orange juice?” Hyde asked, opening the cupboard so that he could select the appropriate glass for Tetsu’s beverage.
The caffeine might make me jittery…
“Maybe orange juice?” Tetsu smiled at how doting Hyde was being.
“M’kay.”
While Hyde’s back was turned, Tetsu picked up his chopsticks and found his hands were still weak and tingly. He tried to pick up a piece of daikon, but the chopsticks kept slipping so he tried to break off a piece of fish, which just seemed to just scoot father away from him. Not wanting Hyde to notice, he did the best he could given the short time frame. Tetsu took both his chopsticks and stabbed his food so he could bring it to his mouth.
“Here you go-” Hyde said, bringing his juice. “What’s with the chipmunk cheeks?”
Hyde arched an eyebrow as Tetsu had the entire piece of fish in one cheek that bulged out comically.
“Hungry,” Tetsu mumbled, chewing on one side.
“Good thing there were no bones today,” Hyde said, shaking his head and sitting down across Tetsu.
DING DONG!
“I’ll get it,” Hyde said, standing up to answer the doorbell.
Tetsu thanked the gods that someone up there had given him a break. He ran to the silverware drawer and grabbed a straw. He returned to his food, put his face as close as he could to the rice and literally shoveled the rice into his mouth. Switching the position of the rice and vegetables, he did the same thing with the pickled side dish. Not wanting to risk dropping the liquid on himself, Tetsu stuck a straw in the miso soup and drank the soup from the straw. He just finished when Hyde returned holding a package.
“You got a refrigerated package-what’s the straw for?” asked Hyde, setting the package on the table.
“For my orange juice,” Tetsu said, sticking the slightly miso flavored tube into his orange juice and drinking to demonstrate his point.
“Yeah, okay, whatever…” Hyde said, sitting back down and staring at the box.
“Who’s it from?” asked Tetsu, sipping more of his juice.
“Mitsuo,” Hyde said, reading the label.
“You can open it,” Tetsu said. “It’s probably something sugar based…”
“Yay!” Hyde squeaked, tearing open the packaging excitedly. “Ooooohh!!!”
“What is it?”
“It says it’s a Pear and Apricot Roll Cake,” Hyde said pulling down the sides of the box so that Tetsu could see the cake. “Want me to cut it now or save it for later?”
“You can eat it now if you want.”
“You don’t want any?”
“Not really. There’s too much whipped cream..." Tetsu said scooping up his tray with his elbows and setting it in the kitchen sink.
“Soooo…I can eat the whole thing then?” Hyde asked, picking up one of the forks that were included in the box.
“If you want.”
“Yay, thank you!” Hyde gushed. “You can leave the dishes. I’ll wash them when I’m done with the cake.”
“Are you gonna eat the whole thing now?!”
“Maaaybee…..” Hyde said slowly, already putting a giant bite of cake into his mouth.
“I can’t watch…” Tetsu said turning away. “I’m gonna go to the drugstore and then practice downstairs.”
“Kaaay, have fun,” waved Hyde. “I’ll call you for lunch…”
