The Reveal
By Beriaearwen
It was a quiet night after a hectic week of finals in college and, of course, a rise in nighttime activity. One of these days Buffy would need to tell Jon about her nighttime activities, but not tonight.
Tonight was the first time in weeks they had been able to spend time together without outside influences distracting them. They'd gone out exploring a bit of the city earlier, had a lovely dinner, an even lovelier walk in the setting sun and were now snuggled together on the remarkably comfortable couch in her apartment watching a movie that didn't require all of their attention in case they decided to be distracted by more date-related activities, but Buffy could tell it wasn't going to happen. Something was keeping her honey from relaxing and she had a feeling she needed to get him to spill the beans if they were going to do anything to progress their physical relationship this night.
“So, going to tell me what's got you all wound up now that finals are over?” she asked. Subtle she was not.
Jon shifted in his seat and was silent for quite a while.
Buffy had gotten much better at the silent game as she aged, so she just waited. Eventually her strategy paid off.
He reached for the remote and turned off the television before turning his body so he could look directly in her eyes. “The thing is, there's something about me that you need to know, but it's so beyond classified that we could both get into real and really big trouble for discussing it.”
Holding his eyes and taking a moment to let the seriousness of his tone sink in, Buffy nodded. She then reached out her hand and entwined it in his. “As long as this isn't where you rip off your face, which was nothing more than a mask and you reveal yourself to be Ethan Hunt of the IMF and I'm under arrest, I'm sure we'll be fine.”
As intended, her words brought a smile to his face. “No masks,” he assured, “but...” He paused, took a deep breath and let it out slowly. “I really shouldn't be telling you this, but things are a lot more serious than I thought they would get with you and I think it's only fair you know.”
Buffy waited, knowing this wasn't the time for another joke or quip.
“I'm actually a clone of a current Air Force General. I have all his memories up until the time of his cloning.”
When the silence stretched for several seconds, Buffy blinked. “And?” When Jon just looked at her in bafflement, she asked, “That's it? You're a clone of an Air Force General? Do you have an expiration date? Are you going to die in a few weeks? Are you a secret Air Force Operative sent to spy on me? Are you undercover and about to leave me? What? There's usually something much more dire involved.”
She could see Jon trying to understand her reaction so she waited, thinking over his revelation. Small things began to slip into place for her. “The way you move. You were in Special Ops, weren't you? And definitely involved in something with space, I've seen you wow your profs with off-hand knowledge. It also explains your... er... expertise in the more... ahem... physical aspects of our relationship,” she finished with a slight blush just thinking of some of those aspects. It did explain why someone a few years younger than her would know so much if he truly hadn't been dating recently.
Jon's confused look began fading and slowly a smile appeared on his face which took on a slightly lecherous look as Buffy spoke of their relationship activities. The lecherous look faded though, to one tinged with love and wonder. “You seriously aren't going to ask me more questions? Recoil in horror? Be grossed out?”
Buffy shrugged. “Who and what you may have started as isn't who you are now. So you've got a freaky origin story. You're not the only one. I didn't fall in love with a clone or with an Air Force General, I fell in love with you, Jon. I love you, not the rough draft.”
A bark of laughter escaped him. “Rough draft?”
“Don't you always make a rough draft before the final product?” Buffy asked, raising an eyebrow in question.
After a moment Jon nodded. “I like it. He was always 'the original' and I was 'the clone'. I like being the final product.” He leaned forward and gave her a warm kiss.
“I like it too,” she said with a smile. Then her smile faded slightly.
“What?” Jon asked, suddenly nervous.
“Yeah. It just struck me that there may be one or two things about my life that I need to share with you?”
His eyebrow rose in question. “Does this have something to do with the fights you get in the nights we're not together?” When she blinked at him blankly, he shrugged. “Sometimes you have fading bruises in the morning that weren't there the day before.”
Buffy relaxed slightly. “Yeah.”
After a moment of silence, Jon decided to give her a break. “What say we hold off on your explaining until tomorrow night and just bask in the fact that you didn't flee in horror when you found out I was a clone.”
“I like that idea. A lot. In fact... why don't you let me show you how much you being a clone doesn't bother me?” she asked coyly, her expression unmistakable.
