The Start
By Beriaearwen
Buffy glanced out of her window and felt a smile curve her lips. She'd been playing cat and mouse with the man outside for weeks and had wondered how long it would take him to find her. Of course, the fact she'd decided to let him catch her had something to do with his finding her, but something inside her was honest to admit that it only sped up the process. The man was good enough he would have eventually found her on his own.
She'd first spotted him six weeks ago. It was the way he moved, she decided, that first drew her attention. He moved like a slayer, or someone very well trained in stealth - black ops was what Riley would call it - but he wasn't obviously military and the moves were too natural for them to have been trained within the past few years. The fact he couldn't be more than a year or two younger than her also spoke against his being trained for those sorts of operations by the military, by intelligence agencies too, she would guess, but she was still learning her way in that world, they all were.
Still, as she blew across her hot coffee, she admitted he was the most interesting thing she'd seen in weeks. Naturally, she had to follow.
That first adventure into tailing the man had not led her anywhere too exciting. The most exciting part had been the trip to the observatory, but she'd let him be once she arrived there. It had been getting close to sunset and she had other business.
When she saw him the next day, she decided to follow again. If nothing else, he was very easy on the eyes.
Her game of follow the yummy guy continued for a few weeks before she let something slip to Dawn who instantly insisted on pictures and a background check. The magical check by Willow to see if she had been put under a spell was a bit much, in her opinion, but not an unnecessary precaution given her history.
Anyway, Jonathan O'Neill was, in fact, about one year younger than her and in town to work on his Master's degree. She briefly wondered why she'd hadn't seen him around campus before dismissing that thought since their areas of study were so diverse. It was a little frustrating for her that, even though younger, he was further along in his Master's program than she was in hers, but, as Dawn pointed out, she had finished her final two and a half years of college in eighteen months before immediately starting on her Master's. Apparently it was a requirement for heads of organizations to have multiple degrees in order to have respect in all necessary areas.
Letting Willow talk her into looking at her education like fighting a big-bad had helped somewhat as had having the books she needed read for her and downloaded into her MP4 player so she could 'read' them while patrolling.
Still, all that aside, she now had her prey sitting outside of her apartment and she had a decision to make. Giles, Willow and the others had been excited about his file and wanted her to recruit him for the Council. Buffy wanted to recruit him for boyfriend duties. Letting out a sigh, she figured none of them would get what they wanted if she didn't make a move now. How the meeting went would determine what role he might fill. As she turned the knob of the door, she wondered if he might not fill both.

Jon sat outside the rather nice apartment, making himself comfortable on the wall. He'd picked up on the woman tailing him three weeks ago and wondered if she'd been doing it longer. Despite deciding against re-entering the military, he hadn't let his skills lapse. In the mistake that had been high school, it had been easier to work out than to deal with teen age girls who might match his physical age, but most definitely did not match his emotional or mental age. It really didn't help when he realized some of the younger freshmen were the same age Charlie would have been.
So, high school had been completed in two years, thank goodness they had enrolled him as a sophomore, and college in five, but that was only because of his double major. Now he was here working on his masters, still working out and practicing what skills he could and that was the only reason why he was able to spot her. She was very good at following him. Despite his best efforts, only twice had he been able to identify where he picked her up as a tail.
After a week and a half of that, he'd spotted her walking across campus and decided to follow. He vaguely wished he had Carter around to research her past and tell him who she was, but there were still things he could do on his own. He was helped immensely as she entered the building and he followed her to the professor's office. He was able to ask one of the other students who she was and got her name, major and a lot of other information that made the security conscious part of him cringe.
Still, Buffy Summers was his new hobby.
He had seen her off and on both following him and when he followed her. Eventually, he admitted to himself that he wanted to get to know her better. And, while he could always approach her on campus, he wanted to call her out on her stalking and decided to follow her home.
That had been two days ago. Last night he hadn't been able to sleep and decided to make his way over to her house. Thoughts of her had been filling his head and he finally realized that he didn't really feel the age difference as much at twenty-three as he had in his teen years. He wanted to date her. To do that, he needed to meet her. That was why he was here.
He saw the door to her place open and stood from where he had been seated. He offered her a smile and felt it broaden as she returned it, waving him across to her.
