The First Test
By Beriaearwen
“Just let me run in and grab the file and then we can be on our way,” Buffy said, already breaking away and heading toward the building in question.
“Now, wait a minute. We've been dating for a couple months now and every time we get close to your office you find some way to make sure I don't get to see the inside. How bad can it be?”
Buffy cringed. “It's not the office,” she admitted. “It's just...” She blew out a breath and seemed to brace herself for what was to come. “I have had not the best taste in men in the past and my friends refuse to believe that I can change in this regard, so I'm afraid of what sort of things they'll ask, demand or bother you with in trying to figure out what's wrong with you that I'm interested.”
The frown on Jon's face intensified. “Hey, there is nothing wrong with you and, as your current boyfriend, I can assure you that there is nothing wrong with your taste in men. Just because some other losers managed to trick a wonderful woman like you into believing they were worthy of your time doesn't mean this one will. Or, as a female friend once explained it to me, you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find a prince.”
Buffy laughed. “So are you saying you're secretly a frog?”
“I have been,” Jon admitted, “but I'm kind of hoping not this time.”
Searching Jon's eyes, she saw he was serious and she felt her heart flutter at the thought. Though it was couched in playful terms, she knew he was serious. “Me too,” she admitted in return and was rewarded with a brilliant smile.
Taking her arm, Jon directed their steps toward the building. “Now come on, let's see how well I do with the first test.”
Buffy cringed. “You may regret that. I'm pretty sure Andrew is the only one in the office.”
“Andrew?” Jon asked. “I don't remember you mentioning him.”
“Yeah. I do my best not to think about him. Ever.” She then shuddered slightly.
“Oh, boy.”
“You betcha.”
Reaching the top of the stairs, Jon opened the door and let Buffy step in before him. He nearly jumped right back out at the high pitched “Buffy!” which greeted them. His eyes widened as a young man about their age came racing down the corridor toward them. The person running pulled up short and slipped on the floor, falling to the ground before popping back up to his feet. Buffy sighed and Jon couldn't help but stare.
“Buffy! It's good you're here. Giles needs you to call him on the conference call ASAP; the information you'll need after the call is printing now from the email he sent. Also I have the file you need...” The person trailed off and stared at Jon, suddenly straightening and trying to look intimidating. “Who's this?”
“Andrew Wells, this is my boyfriend, Jon O'Neill.”
“Pleasure,” Jon offered with a smile and a nod.
Andrew's eyes narrowed. “Buffy, you better go see Giles. I'll take care of Jon.”
Jon spotted Buffy rolling her eyes and suppressed a laugh. When he was sure he wouldn't laugh, he said, “It's fine. I'll just wait with Andrew. I'm sure you'll find us when you're done.”
Buffy looked very unsure. “You really want to do this?”
“Gotta meet the in-laws sometime,” he said, not really thinking about the words until he saw Buffy's expression change to one filled with love and joy. He had always thought, when the time came, if the time came, it would be difficult for him to say those words, but it really wasn't and he found out he didn't really mind. “Go on.”
“You are a wonderful man,” Buffy said softly before she stood on her toes and tugged him down slightly so she could kiss his cheek. “I won't be long.”
“Don't worry about it,” Jon said again, feeling his heart swell. His smile didn't fade as he watched her walk away. “So... Andrew. Don't suppose there's coffee, or better yet, cake?”
Andrew had a contemplative look on his face. “Both, actually,” he replied indicating the other man should follow him. “How long have you and Buffy been dating?”
Jon felt he was asking more because he felt he should than out of any real concern. “A couple of months.”
Andrew came to an abrupt stop, his eyes bulged and he seemed to choke on air. “A.. couple... months!” he exclaimed. “And I've heard nothing!”
“No one has,” Jon quickly cut in, hoping he hadn't lost part of his hearing to the outraged squeal to which he'd just been subjected. He watched as the other man's jaw opened and closed several times before the other man muttered something under his breath and Jon thought he caught the word “force”. Remembering the little Buffy had told him about Andrew and his own observations, he replied, “Yes, the force is strong in me.”
Andrew froze for several seconds before a wide smile broke across his face and a squeal of delight echoed down the halls.
Jon found himself grabbed by the arm and dragged behind Andrew who was babbling at a very high rate of speed. He caught portions of words here and there and identified them as related to Star Wars. He said a quick prayer of thanks for Teal'c's obsession with the series so that he could, hopefully, keep up at least partially with the younger man. After all, it wouldn't do to completely alienate the first of Buffy's friends and family he'd met.
Thirty-seven minutes and fifteen seconds - yes, he timed it - later, Buffy rescued him from the clutches of the evil - most definitely not reformed - mage and he hastened their escape from the building.
Buffy was chuckling softly. “I did warn you.”
“Yes, you did,” Jon agreed, drawing Buffy into a hug to help ground himself back in reality. “The others can't be worse.”
“They are a quirky bunch, but no, none of them are like Andrew. He's the worst and since you have won him over, the rest should be cake.”
“Cake?” Jon said perking up and leaving his arm around her shoulder as he moved to her side so they could walk down the sidewalk together. “I could really go for some cake.”
Buffy brushed another kiss on his cheek and offered, “I know just where to get some.”
