Landing for 4A and 4B
The guys were about enter their apartment for Vintage Game Night when they saw the new cashier from The Comic Center coming up the stairs behind them. Sheldon looked at him in confusion. “Does Stuart deliver comic books now?” he asked his friends.
“No,” Leonard responded with his own confusion. He waved at the cashier and said, “Hi! What are you doing here?”
The guy stopped at the top of the stairs and answered, “I’m picking up my date.”
Howard cut in rudely, but with genuine curiosity, “But you work in Stuart’s store. How did you get a woman to go out with you?” He turned to his friends and added, “If he can do it, we should be able to as well.”
Ignoring the insult in that statement, the guy explained, “I saw a cute girl, made polite small talk with her, found out we enjoyed each other’s company and asked her out for dinner and either dancing or a movie…depending on what she feels like by that point.”
“Huh, and that works?” Howard said with a thoughtful gleam. “How do you trick her into enjoying your company?”
Deciding it wasn’t worth talking to them anymore, he backed away and told them, “I need to go; we have reservations for 7.”
To their shock, he didn’t continue up the stairs. Instead, he walked across the hall and knocked on Penny’s door. She opened the door and smiled widely at the sight of him. “Hey, Oz! I’m just about ready. Wanna come in while I finish?” Seeing the boys staring at them, she waved hesitantly in their direction. “Hey, guys. Have you met Oz?”
“Yes, at the comic book store,” Leonard managed to say. “How did you meet him?”
“A guy was bothering me after work one day and Oz got him to back off,” Penny said with another smile towards Oz.
“But he’s my height,” Howard protested.
“I can’t tell you how he did it, but the guy left and hasn’t come back since…which isn’t a great loss since he only ordered one drink…nursed it all night and didn’t leave a tip,” Penny ranted with the indignation of a person who lived on her tips.
“He just thought she was an easy target for intimidation. It could have been anyone who stood up to him,” Oz added, dismissing his actions as especially heroic. Maybe if it had been a vampire, it would have been something, but it was just a normal guy as far as Oz could tell.
“Anyway, I need to finish getting pretty for tonight,” Penny told them.
Oz commented, “Then we can go, because you’ve gone past pretty into stunning already.”
She giggled but pulled him into the apartment anyway so she could touch up her makeup.
Leonard started breathing heavy and whined, “What? How?” He kept doing that for 30 seconds before the others herded him into the apartment. Sheldon could see Vintage Game Night being replaced with ‘Why is Penny dating that guy?’ night. Something that happened with far too much frequency since they met their blonde neighbor.
The twist on tonight’s version was that he was a geek like they were. He worked in a comic book store, for crying out loud! He wasn’t tall and athletic either. If she wanted to date a nerd, there were 2-3 guys in that very room who would give their right arm for a chance. Raj waffled because he knew it was close to impossible since he couldn’t talk to her.
It didn’t get any better when Oz became a regular fixture at Penny’s place over the next few weeks. Even when she came over to their apartment, he’d frequently join them if he was around. They tried to make him look stupid by talking science theory with him, but he actually knew the stuff they were talking about. He was even able to cite studies to back up his opinions.
The looks he gave them after those talks said that he knew what they were trying to do, but he didn’t call them out in front of Penny. When she went to the bathroom, he shook his head, “Lame, guys. If she realized what you were doing, she’d break you in half.”
“I know she doesn’t like us talking about things she doesn’t understand, but she talks about shoes,” Sheldon defended himself.
Oz, who kind of got Sheldon a little, explained, “That’s not what these three are doing. They’re trying to make me look stupid in front of her.”
“Oh, they were trying to assert their male dominance in a field that which they excel, and they thought you wouldn’t,” Sheldon summarized. “Very impressive, gentlemen. Next time, however, you may want to do some research, so you don’t fail.”
“Fail what?” Penny asked as she walked into the room.
“Pop culture quiz,” Oz answered for them. “They’ve never heard of Cibo Matto.”
“Can you believe he got to see them in person?” Penny exclaimed. “I’m so jealous!”
“Eh, they’re kind of a niche band, so it isn’t surprising they haven’t heard of them,” Oz offered graciously. “We should practice your lines for your audition tomorrow.”
“Oh right!” Penny said, jumping up again to throw her dinner containers away. “Oz is so sweet to be helping me go over my lines and critique me. He’s the best!” she added with a kiss to his cheek.
“I’ll be right there,” he told her. After the door closed, he explained, mostly to Leonard, “If you want a girl like Penny, you have to treat her as a person, not a prize to be won. That means encouraging her in her pursuits and finding things you have in common with her…not stealing her mail and pretending the mailman delivered it to you by accident. Just something to consider.”
A/N: I saw a video about the adorkable misogyny of BBT and had to give Penny a chance to escape her future. I thought Oz would be a good way to do that. I can see him working for Stuart and being kind of interested in comic books (maybe not to their level, but a little).
