Contrary to popular expectation and her own good sense, Muffin loves to be groomed. That she's only just discovered this is no measure of the depth of her enjoyment, and now that Newbie's found himself with a Deluxe Grooming Station, she insists he see to her coat and nails at least once a day

"What's a split end?"

Karen's standing beside the man with brush, the shouting man, who looks a bit like Rollie, squinting up at the kitty on the roof.

"Is it bad?"

"Trichoptilosis," quoth Newbie, turning to shake his brush at her, "is the splitting of hair at the end. It's super bad and gives you feather hair!"

Karen gives the man who looks like Rollie her best shocked face. Her mouth is wide open.

She claps both hands on top of her head.

"Do I have feather hair?"

"I dunno," says Newbie. "Do you skip conditioner, brush your hair when wet, yank knots out instead of coaxing, and SLASH OR use any hair curlers, straighteners, or otherwise heat utilizing style devices?"

Curtis peeks out the Compound's front door, and eyes the surrounding area with keen suspicion.

"Craig!" he hisses. "Where did you go?"

"Over here!" Newbie calls, watching as Muffin pads across the roof to peer down on Curtis from above. "Hey you want your nails done?"

Curtis looks up at Muffin and scowls, then at Newbie. "No! Do I look like a cat to you? Or female?" he calls.

"No, but that's no reason to let your nails go to seed," says Newbie. Besides, he's secretly hoping Curtis will let him brush his hair.

Joe wasn't chewing gum this time around, but he still approached Newbie looking faintly amused, wondering if this interaction, like all their others, was gonna end with Newbie looking pretty fucking confused. Ozzy trotted up as well, nosing at Newbie's arm curiously before she licked him.

"Your cat is gonna get split ends?" he asked, eyebrows lifted in amusement. "You do this for all the felines in that cement box?"

"I wish," grumbles Newbie, pushing the brush absently through his own hair before he catches himself. "Octavian won't let me, and he's got the most delicate fur of all! I can't even give him a protein oat shampoo!"

"Uh-huh," Joe said, looking amused as Ozzy stuck her nose into the brush, trying to get Newbie's attention. "You like doing that kinda stuff?" Maybe he'd ask the guy if he'd groom Ozzy. That way Joe would never have to do it himself.

Newbie pulls the brush away from the dog's mouth. No way will Muffin let him use it on her again if it's got dog spit in it!

"Yeah!" he answers. "It's important 'cause, lots of animals don't know how to lick themselves? Or cut their nails! But I got a kit."

Leoben quickly picked Thirteen up before he could bound after the kitten. He barked a little bit though, wagging his tail and trying to get down before giving up and licking at Leoben's neck.

"Don't do that," he told the puppy in a firm tone of voice before looking over at Newbie. "Maybe you should just cut her fur or something next time you see..." What was her name? Biscuit? "Muffin. She'd be less likely to get tangles and split ends too."

"I can't," says Newbie seriously, staring at the little dog. "She'll cut me. Her fur's her pride and joy!"

Thirteen tilted his head, eying Newbie curiously and squirming until Leoben set him down. "Is it?" He asked, staring up at Muffin. She'd probably look better with less of fur, but he decided it was better not to say anything about it.

"Yeah." Cupping a hand to his mouth, Newbie's voice lowers dramatically. "I think she looks like a yeti, but she likes it. I think it's 'cause of her dad." He nods, his blond, spiked hair bouncing next to Leoben's.

"oR dreadLOCks, caN WE dREADLock your cat. oR mayBE shAVE em and thEN DYe theM BLUe. thEY'D Look good bLUe." Delirium said, as a cat snuck between her feet. It was a good thing she didn't have her doggies with her, her doggies didn't like the Island's feline population. Even Barnabas who'd been... different. "dO you waNT TO grOOm me instead nEWbiebiRD?"

Delirium patted Newbie's head fondly.

More than a few seconds' thought are required for something as important as Delirium's hair, but Newbie nods in one, and uses the second to retrieve a larger brush from his bag. "I got dry shampoo, too, you want me to use that?"

Delirium touched her unruly hair, checking it before nodding solemnly. "yEs," Delirium agreed, nodding her hair. "i tRied to finD you a baBy buT i thinK THey thinK i'm a babY STEaLer. sO i goT You a sock insteaD. oH-oH. caN i do yOUR hair afTER minE?"

"Oh," says Newbie, taking one of her hands to lead her to a nearby rock. "Where's the sock?" Half a beat later, he asks, "Do you want a mohawk?"
