Contrary to popular expectation and her own good sense, Muffin loves to be groomed. That she's only just discovered this is no measure of the depth of her enjoyment, and now that Newbie's found himself with a Deluxe Grooming Station, she insists he see to her coat and nails at least once a day

"What's a split end?"

Karen's standing beside the man with brush, the shouting man, who looks a bit like Rollie, squinting up at the kitty on the roof.

"Is it bad?"

"Trichoptilosis," quoth Newbie, turning to shake his brush at her, "is the splitting of hair at the end. It's super bad and gives you feather hair!"

Karen gives the man who looks like Rollie her best shocked face. Her mouth is wide open.

She claps both hands on top of her head.

"Do I have feather hair?"

"I dunno," says Newbie. "Do you skip conditioner, brush your hair when wet, yank knots out instead of coaxing, and SLASH OR use any hair curlers, straighteners, or otherwise heat utilizing style devices?"

Karen looks at him like she's trying to process all of that. Behind her, ShorHor is eating the grass.

"I dunno. Shadow washes my hair for me."

Karen's eyes narrow. She wonders if Shadow's giving her feather hair.

Newbie's just about to ask if Shadow's imaginary when he sees the tiny pig horse thing at her back. His eyes pop, and he actually takes a step away. "Hey, what is that!"

"That's ShorHor," says Karen, matter-of-factly. "He's my horse. He doesn't have any split ends at all."

"Funny little horse," says Newbie, venturing a step closer. "Betcha he does. What kinda brush you usin' on him?"

"Brush?" says Karen, raising an eyebrow at him. "What brush?"

Karen hasn't really thought about brushes.

[frooty_o_s]

"Y'know, a horse brush!" Newbie holds up a finger and goes to retrieve his new collection of brushes from his bag. "I got all kinds. For straightening and smoothing and detangling and volume. Long hair and short hair and curly hair. You gotta have the right brush or you might as well not brush it at all!"

"I don't brush him at all!"

Karen throws her hands up in the hair.

"I don't even brush my hair!"

"Yeah, you probably need some grooming," agrees Newbie. "I could do it for you. For a fee."

Karen's eyes narrow as she looks at up at him.

"What's a fee?"

[frooty_o_s]

"It's like...." drawls Newbie, poking at the top of his head with his brush. "A cookie. If you want something, you gotta give something. Like a cookie!"

"I don't have any cookies," said Karen. "I've got an apple. And...a carton. And...my favourite jumper."

"Yeah, but," says Newbie, "I don't want those. So they can't be fees!"
