This was something that Hermione could easily get used to. Charlie had woken her up with a kiss and a tray full of breakfast things before sliding back into bed with her.
Hermione broke off a piece of croissant, dipping it in the jam on her plate. "What's this all about, Charlie?"
He studied her for a moment, before sipping his mug of coffee. "Happy Valentine's Day."
Colour flooded Hermione's cheeks. "Oh, Charlie," she breathed, "I'm so sorry. I completely forgot." She cringed, feeling horribly embarrassed and uncomfortable. How could she have forgotten their first Valentine's Day? Swallowing, she looked nervously at him.
Charlie's arm slipped around her shoulders. "S'alright. You've been busy with work lately." He smiled, tearing up another croissant and sprinkling flakes of pastry over the tray. "Which is why I talked to your boss and got you the day off work."
Hermione's eyes widened. "You what? Really?" Work had been dragging her down recently and she'd often found herself staying after hours to finish. "Oh, thank you. That's... brilliant."
He squeezed her shoulder. "Thought you'd be pleased."
"I am. Thank you." She grinned. "My hero, saving me from all that nasty work."
"All in a day's work, ma'am." Charlie kissed her temple. "Are you going to open your present?"
"Present? What present?" Hermione couldn't see a present anywhere, although the prospect of getting something from Charlie made her feel guilty about forgetting Valentine's Day as well as excited.
Charlie frowned slightly. "Where did it go? Oh, yeah. I remember." He lifted up the lid of the butter dish.
There was no butter in the dish. "Oh," said Hermione, not sure what else to say. With trembling fingers, she lifted the small box from the dish. "Charlie?"
He didn't say anything, just nudging her with his elbow. The contact of their bare skin sent a shiver through her as she cracked open the box. She nearly dropped it onto her croissant, breath catching in her throat.
"So?"
Hermione licked her lips nervously. "I don't know what to say," she admitted quietly.
"Multiple choice," Charlie teased. "'Yes' or 'no'."
"It's that easy?"
"Yeah. I hope so." He gently stroked her arm. "You can think about it if you want."
Hermione exhaled slowly, Charlie chewing his bottom lip in anticipation. "Would it help if I got down on one knee?" he asked gently.
She laughed at this. "Yes."
Charlie pushed back the covers, making to climb out of the bed, Hermione, however, grabbed his arm, pulling him back. "No," she said softly, "I mean yes."
"Oh. Right. That's good."
Hermione nodded. "Yeah, it is." She offered the box up to him and Charlie took the ring, gently slipping it onto her finger. He kissed her, smiling and tasting strawberry jam on her lips.
"Now we can spend the rest of the day celebrating."
"You knew I would say 'yes', didn't you?"
"I hoped you would." He kissed her again. "Shut up and eat. You're going to need your strength."
