Charlie frowned, seeing Hermione shiver. "I told you that you should have worn a warmer cloak."
Hermione looked up at him surprise. "Sorry? What did you say?" The autumn festival was in full swing around them and Hermione could barely hear anything over the noise of the band that had set itself up by the bonfire. The music was ringing in her ears, cutting above the excite chatter of the assembled witches and wizards. Music and food and laughter filled the air like a sort of comforting blanket that surrounded everyone.
"Your cloak." Charlie thrust a mug of mulled wine at her. He raised his voice. "I said you should have worn a warmer one." Sipping his own wine, Charlie let the hot liquid warm him.
She shrugged, her numb fingers wrapping tightly around the mug. "I suppose. I didn't realise it was going to get so cold."
When he saw her shiver again, Charlie took her by the elbow and tugged her in the direction of the bonfire. "That any better?" Hermione nodded, the heat of the flames rapidly warming her cold cheeks. "You'll know better for next time," Charlie said with a smile.
Hermione raised her eyebrows. "What makes you think there'll be a next time?"
Charlie grinned. "That's what I said the first time." He tilted his head, thinking. "I think this is my eighth. Maybe the ninth."
Hermione laughed, sipping her mulled wine. "So when does the nudity start?"
"You're going to take part?" He was genuinely surprised by the question, but decided that it was probably the effect of the lively atmosphere on her. It seemed to affect everyone and he remembered how he woken up with his first tattoo after one of these festivals.
"Depends how much I've had to drink." Hermione nearly spilled her wine, though, when a firework exploded above their heads in a flash of orange and red. Laughing at her own fright, she moved closer to Charlie as another firework wound its way through the crowd, sending off golden sparks and only narrowly missing the revellers.
Cheers rose up from the crowd, a giant red Catherine Wheel spinning crazily above their heads; Hermione recognised the products as coming from Weasley's Wizard Wheezes and she glanced at Charlie, only to find him enthralled by a dragon-shaped firework that was dancing wildly above their heads.
Charlie noticed her staring and winked. He lowered his head to whisper by her ear. "It's not exactly anatomically correct, but they've done a pretty good job."
"Trust you to be picking at the details."
"You were thinking the same thing." That was true - the dragon's tail was a little out of proportion and the eyes were set too far forward on the face - but Hermione wasn't going to admit it.
Charlie quickly wrapped his arm around her shoulder, spinning her around to look at another firework that was sparking and spitting behind them. "Look at that!"
He didn't take his arm off her shoulder.
