The aroma was heady, drifting throughout the house. It was this that finally prompted Hermione to open her eyes. She rolled over, intent on giving Charlie a kiss. He was gone, though, which was explain the smell coming from the kitchen.

Hermione glanced at the clock. It was about one o'clock and Hermione would normally have felt guilty about staying in bed until this late. However, considering that they had been awake until the early hours of the morning, it was nice just to relax. Besides, she wasn't in her own bed, so it was almost like being on holiday.

Pulling on Charlie's dressing gown, Hermione padded barefoot out to the kitchen. She leant against the doorframe, watching him work. "Mmm. A man in the kitchen. Very sexy."

He turned to look at her, smirking as he took in her dishevelled appearance. "A naked woman wearing my dressing gown. I think that's even sexier."

"And what makes you think I'm naked under this?" Hermione pulled the heavy material tighter around herself, fastening the belt. She fiddled with the end of the belt, still a little nervous about wandering around Charlie's place like this, even after a couple of months.

"Because your knickers are still in the sitting room. Found them earlier when I was looking for my shoes." Charlie grinned, wiping down the work surface. "Did I wake you? I didn't mean to."

"No, I think it was the smell. You know, it always reminds me of Christmas. My mum used to make it every year." Walking over to him, Hermione peered at the pan, a vast quantity of mulled wine simmering gently. "Is that for your party later?" She bit her lip, suddenly remembering what day it was. "Happy birthday, by the way."

She kissed him gently and Charlie stroked a stray lock of hair from her face. "Thanks. Another year older." He flashed her a wry grin. "I don't have any grey hairs, do I?"

"No more than yesterday," Hermione teased. She frowned, feeling a sudden pang of hunger. "Have you got anything to eat that isn't party food?"

Charlie frowned. "I think there should be a loaf of bread in the bread tin. If it hasn't gone off." He gave the mulled wine a stir as Hermione investigated the bread situation. "So when do I get my birthday present?"

Grinning, Hermione popped a piece of bread in the toaster. "After last night, what makes you think there's something else?"

Thrusting out his lower lip into an exaggerated pout, Charlie made a whining noise. Hermione rolled her eyes, reaching for a clean plate. "You'll get your present later at the party with the rest of them. Where's the butter?"

"Over by the window. So don't I get anything this afternoon to make the whole day really special? But it's my birthday. Please?"

Hermione tugged on Charlie's apron, drawing him closer. "I didn't say that." She smiled knowingly. "I think I could definitely give you something special this afternoon."
