Aoi's POV

~~

We don't really have much to do now, except wait.

Wait for the idiot to show up.

The one holding Uruha prisoner.

We've already gone over everything more times than I really wanted to.

But we need to be sure of all the possibilities.

Just in case.

None of us want any surprises.

Magical or otherwise.

So we just keep running over ideas.

Until I think I'm about to scream.

I use the excuse of caring for the horses to escape.

And to spend time with Uruha away from the others.

I'm not sure what he's using as an excuse for hanging out with me and the animals.

And I don't think any of us really cares.

Because that leaves my brother alone with Miyavi, too.

Nope.

No one's complaining.

All in all, things are pretty good.

That is if we could all just leave.

I smile as I look over at Uruha who's busy brushing one of the horses.

To say the guy's easy on the eyes would be an understatement.

I can really understand why this Mana fellow's jealous.

Uruha's got a certain style all his own.

Even when he's being completely ridiculous.

Like now.

He's making cute faces at one of the braver barn cats.

I think he's actually trying to coax it down from the rafters.

But the silly creature's just sitting there, watching.

Hell, if Uruha'd coo like that at me, I'd probably end up in his lap.

What am I saying?

I KNOW I'd end up in his lap.

Or he'd be in mine.

Either way sounds far too appealing to me.

"Damn cat," he mutters.

And my eyes dart back up.

I catch a glimpse of the animal's tail right before it disappears completely.

Looking back at Uruha, I can't stop the laugh that escapes me.

"What?" he says, looking slightly hurt.

"What would you have done if it'd come down?"

"I would've taken it in the house to get some milk. And maybe some of the leftovers from last night's dinner."

"In other words, you would have ruined it as a barn cat."

I move to one of the haystacks.

Tossing a blanket over it, I sit, patting the spot next to me.

Wanting Uruha to join me.
Pouting, he slowly approaches.

Still eyeing me, he finally sits.

But as far away from me as he can manage on the (not quite small enough for me) bundle.

"What did you mean by 'ruining it as a barn cat' anyway?"

I grin, "A barn cat's job is to keep the place free of mice and rats. If you feed it, it won't need to hunt for food."

"Oh," he says, looking sad.

"Do you want a pet?" I ask, trying to get him to smile at me.

He shrugs, "I dunno. I just want something to love. That'll love me back. A pet seems like the easiest way."

He looks up, meeting my eyes. "An animal will give you unconditional love if you treat it nice. That's something you rarely find anywhere else."

I smile at him.

Wondering how he'd feel about an Aoi-cat for a pet.

The thought of him running his hands all over my body, like he does with the horses, would certainly make me purr.

Along with a few other things.

A few moments later, we're both heading for the house.

I stop, halfway there.

Hearing the approaching hoof beats of several horses.

Glancing over at Uruha, I see his eyes widen.

"Crap," he says, before turning to flee for the relative safety of the house.

I decide to stand there, waiting for the now visible carriage.

It comes to a stop near where I'm standing.

I beat the uniformed boy to the door.

Tossing it open, I peer inside.

Expecting it to be Mana.

And there he is.

Pretty much as Uruha described him.

Long blonde hair styled in ringlet curls.

Make-up accenting eyes and lips.

And wearing an overly-laced blue dress.

I offer my hand as assistance from the carriage.

He just stares at me.

Looking me over from head to toe.

"Who are you," he finally whispers.

Reinforcing the image of a porcelain doll.

"My name is Aoi. I'm traveling with my brother and his friend," I say, stepping away from the door.

It's obvious he isn't going to accept my help.

But he needs to get out of the blasted carriage so we can get that amulet.

And we need to find out whether or not he has any magical ability.

Or I'd climb in there with him and take it away from him now.

But I really don't want to chance getting blasted by something unpleasant.

I watch as Mana steps lightly out of the carriage with the boy's help.

Not even acknowledging him in any way.

Typical of those that think they're better than others.

It's gonna be fun putting him in his place.

"So, you're not alone?" Mana asks softly.

"No. Like I said, my brother and a friend are here, too."

"Why?" he asks, looking sideways at me.

And I almost laugh.

He's certainly suspicious.

Of course, that could work against us.

But I have faith in my brother.

As well as myself.

I'm sure that, with Miyavi's help, we'll have no problem ridding this popinjay of his treasure.

I take the steps faster than Mana.

Not that I'm surprised.

He even walks like he's fragile.

I open the door with a courtly flourish.

Thanking my uncle for the hours of training he made us endure.

I bow low, hiding my smirk at the other's expression.
This could actually be interesting.
