Hiroto’s POV
~~
It wasn’t fair.
But then life rarely was.
Having recently lost my parents, I was forced to live with relatives.
Relatives I’d never met before.
They didn’t like me.
Not one bit.
My aunt treated me like I was something that crawled out from under a stump.
My cousins laughed at me constantly.
And my uncle ignored me.
Then suddenly, everything was worse.
Everyone in the kingdom was expected to show up for the Princes birthday ball.
But I don’t think my aunt expects me to go.
Actually, I’m pretty sure she’s counting on me NOT going.
You see, she knows, like the rest of the kingdom, that the King expects Prince Reita to choose his life-partner.
Lucky him.
Being forced to marry.
If he doesn’t choose at this ball, his father will pick someone out for him.
I really do feel sorry for him, even tho he’s royalty.
They’ve got everything so easy.
So this ball is tonight.
And the ‘terror twins’, my cousins, have been keeping me super busy.
Helping them get ready.
Leaving me to scrounge around.
Trying to find something I can wear.
I look at my meager wardrobe again.
Absolutely nothing suitable for a royal ball.
Unless I plan on going as a beggar.
Which really isn’t an option.
I sigh when I hear my aunt call for everyone.
Looks like the carriage is here.
I reluctantly walk down the stairs.
“Hiroto,” my aunt sneers, “you’re not ready yet?”
“No, ma’am. I won’t be going.”
“That’s a shame” my cousins snicker together.
They really are creepy.
And then they’re all piling into the carriage.
Looking at it, I’m actually glad I’ll be staying home.
They’re really crammed in there.
I don’t wait to see them off.
Like they’d even notice.
Instead of going back to my small room, I head out to the garden.
It’s one of the few places around here that I like.
Very quiet and peaceful.
I sit on the bench under the tree.
Just looking at the night sky.
When I hear a load crash behind me.
I shoot to my feet.
Turning, I expect to see some giant monster has broken thru the wall surrounding my retreat.
Instead I see two figures.
Long cloaks covering them both from head to toe.
“What kinda entrance do you call that?” the taller of the two was saying.
“It’s not as easy as it looks, ya know,” the shorter one shot back.
Brushing leaves and dirt from his cloak.
He turned to me, throwing the hood back.
Showing the red streaks in his otherwise black hair.
“Hi. I’m Ruki. I’ve come to grant your deepest wish.”
“What do you call that?” his companion said, grabbed his arm.
“That’s the dumbest drivel I’ve ever heard,” the taller man continued.
“But that’s what the book tells us to say.”
“Not to interrupt or anything. But who ARE you?” I asked, trying to stop whatever argument they might decide to get into.
“Like I said, I’m Ruki. This is Miyavi.”
“He’s your fairy god-person. And I’m an inspector for the Guild. He’s not the sharpest crayon. If you get my meaning.”
”Hey! Just cuz I’ve had some trouble doesn’t mean I’m stupid or anything.” Ruki tried defending himself from the others accusation.
“My fairy god-what?”
“God-person. Ever since the Guild started allowing males to enlist we’ve had to become gender non-specific. And it’s a real pain, too.” Miyavi was on a roll.
Until Ruki stepped back in.
“But none of that really matters. I’m here to get you to that ball and help you win yourself a Prince.”
He announced, like it was the easiest thing in the world to do.
Miyavi just rolled his eyes.
“Aren’t you forgetting something?”
Ruki looked a little confused.
”What? He doesn’t need an invitation. There’s a perfectly good horse right over there. What else is there?”
I just grabbed a handful of cloth from what passed as my shirt.
“Oh. That. Simple. Just watch,” he said, taking a sparkling gold wand from his belt.
He looked me over and then nodded.
Muttering a few words, he waved the wand at me.
I flinched, expecting something horrible to happen.
But nothing.
Until I looked back down at myself.
I was dressed in the finest silk I’d ever seen.
With lace and baubles, all in white.
I glanced over at the horse.
Wondering how I was going to manage the large animal.
It was gentle, but it was also used for fieldwork.
I don’t think the animal had ever been ridden.
Ruki just smirked, like he could read my mind.
Again waving the wand and muttering words, he ended with a flourish.
I looked back at the horse.
It was now as white as my clothes.
And as slim and elegant as any I’d seen ridden by the gentry.
“That should be everything,” Ruki looked back at Miyavi.
The taller man just shrugged.
“We’ll meet you there. And don’t worry. No matter what he says. This’ll be a snap.”
Ruki said, helping me on the horse.
But I still wasn’t sure about any of this.
