Shou’s POV

~~

I can barely contain myself.

I think I’ve found something.

Something useful.

I’ve got the book tucked under my shirt.

Waiting for a chance to sneak away.

Hoping someone or something will keep the king busy.

At least long enough for me to show it to Saga.

I finally get my chance.

I take a moment to check in the throne room.

It looks like they’ll be a while.

I practically fly up the stars.

Almost slamming the door behind me.

Saga’s already waiting when I move the curtain.

“What is it?” he asks as I pull the book out.

I find the page.

Turning the book, showing him the page.

He skims the words, eyes growing larger.

When he reaches the end, he looks up at me.

“Did I read that right?”

“It says you can be moved.  All we need is something similar.”

“So you find a hand mirror, put it in the right place, say all that stuff.  And I move to it?”

“That’s the way I read it.”

He looks thoughtful for a moment before speaking again.

“Then you could take me outside the castle.  We could travel until we find something that looks familiar to me.  That is…if you want to.”

“Of course I want to! Why else would I be doing all this?  I want to help you.  Anyway that I can.”

He smiles at me.

“This is so important.  I’ll never be able to repay you.  Even if we don’t find my body, you’re still doing so much for me. Thank you.”

~~

I leave Saga with both of us feeling much better about everything.

And I actually make it to the bottom of the stairs before running into anyone.

"What were you doing up there, boy?" the guard asks, grabbing my arm.

"Nothing," I stammer "Just putting away some clean towels."

It's a good lie.

There's no way he can check.

If he drags me to the laundry room, whoever's working won't tell the guard anything.

Most of us working in the castle don't talk to the guards.

It's not that they're mean, it's just that they're not 'us'.

He scowls at me, but lets me go.

I hurry away, thinking how lucky I really am.

If it'd been the king, I'd probably be in one of the dungeons.

And completely unable to help Saga.

I get back to my room, breathing a sigh of relief.

Now, to put the book someplace safe.

Then I remember the loose board by the bed.

I toss the threadbare rug aside.

Feeling for the loose edge, I grab it with both hands.

Yanking with all my strength.

Luckily, it's enough.

Wrapping the book in an old shirt, I stuff it in the hole.

Replacing the piece of wood, I look closely at it.

No one should notice, I think, as I carefully cover it with the rug.

Now, to find a hand-mirror.

I'm thinking the best place to look will be in the old queen's suite.

No one ever goes in there.

And all her stuff should still be where she left it.

Being a lot more careful, I slowly make my way back to the upper floor.

I slip inside the room.

It looks like no one's even dusted in here.

I walk over to the dressing table, thinking that's where her mirror should be.

Finding it, I stuff it under my shirt.

Leaving everything else behind, I slip back into my room.

Adding the mirror to the book's hiding place, after wrapping it in some old piece of cloth as well.

I make my way back to finish my chores.

The ones I've neglected all afternoon.

But I'm not working for very long when a couple of guards come in.

One I recognize from earlier on the stairs.

He points me out, signalling me to join them.

Out in the hall, he grabs my arm again.

"Tell him why you were upstairs?"

"I..I was just putting away laundry."

"Did you go into the queen's suite, too?" he asks, giving my arm a tug.

"We just checked all the rooms.  There are footprints in the dust."

I try freeing my self.

"I didn't do anything wrong."

The door behind us opens.

Some of the other servants coming out into the hallway.

"Shou does what he's told.  Leave him alone" one of the older ones speaks up.

"Did you tell him to go upstairs?" the guard asks.

"If he says he was putting laundry away, that's what he was doing."

"What about going into the queen's suite? What was he doing in there?"

The head maid steps forward.

"That room's nothing but a dust trap.  Somebody needs to clean it."

"Did you send him up there?"

"Not personally," she hedges "but the boy's been known to take the initiative.  He probably overheard some of us discussing it.  none of us want to tackle that room.  Maybe he was taking a look, trying to see how much it'd require."

"That's awfully convenient," the guard says, staring at the maid.

She surprises me, staring back at him.

"Maybe.  But it's also true."

After the guards leave, the maid walks up to me.

"You'd be better off leaving.  And the sooner the better.  Those guys are gonna be keeping an eye on you."

I know she's right.

But what about Saga?

I can't just leave, not without at least letting him know I'll be back.

And I do plan on coming back.
For him.
