Shou’s POV
~~
Sitting at their table, I start asking them some questions.
"How long have you two been living here?"
"Oh, I dunno. Maybe three years?" Kai looks at his brother.
"Yeah, I think its been that long," Aoi adds, scratching his head.
"Really? What about all the talk of monsters, ghosts, and stuff like that?"
Aoi starts laughing.
"There aren't any ghosts around. Or if there are I haven't seen or heard any."
"It's been him," Kai tells me, giving his brother a playful slap.
"I don't usually like company. And I hate hunters. They think it's OK to go and kill whatever animals they want."
"I don't mind company, tho," Kai smiles at me.
And I can't help smiling back.
"What about you? What's your story?"
So I tell them everything.
My life at the castle.
The old king dying.
The arrival of the new king.
The mirror.
I tell them about Saga.
How I want to help him.
I take out the book, showing them what I've found.
I ask them if they think it'll work.
Just to get some other opinions.
After a minute, Aoi turns back to me.
"We don't really know a lot about magic. But it sounds like a good plan."
"But you had to leave the castle without trying it," Kai's looking thoughtfully at me "Why?"
"I wasn't as careful as I could've been. One of the guards saw me coming down the stairs. He checked and found the tracks I left in the queen's chambers. One of the maids suggested I leave. At least for a while."
"That makes sense. But you need to get back inside so you can try out that spell."
Kai holds his hand out for the book, "May I?"
After I hand it to him, he carefully starts looking thru the pages.
"I suppose you have to have some magical ability to cast that spell," Aoi wonders softly.
"No. It looks like anyone can perform most of these. Look," Kai counters, showing his brother a passage on one of the pages.
Aoi nods, "Looks like you lucked out on that one, Shou."
He turns back to Kai, "So, what do we do to get Shou back into the castle? And we need to buy him enough time to pull off that spell."
"You..want to help me?" I can't believe it.
"Of course. No one should be forced to live in a mirror," Kai looks irritated.
"Besides, this king of yours doesn't sound like a very nice guy. Snobby royalty really piss me off."
Aoi adds, smiling at me.
"Why don't I show you where you can sleep?" Kai says after a moment.
I nod, standing when he does.
The room he takes me to is small, but comfortable.
And the bed's a lot softer than the one I had in the castle.
So it's no surprise that I fall asleep almost as soon as my head lands on the pillow.
The real surprise, for me at least, is when I wake up.
I remember my dream.
I was inside, but not anyplace I've ever seen before.
And there was something else inside with me.
I could hear it breathing.
I was afraid, and yet, I wasn't
At least I wasn't afraid of what was making the noises.
There was something else tho.
Something menacing looming over everything.
Like a dark cloud.
I try to shake off the feeling as I climb out of bed.
I'm still feeling uneasy when I walk into the kitchen.
Kai's at the stove, humming to himself.
"Morning" he smiles, placing a plate in front of me.
I smile back as the door opens.
Aoi comes inside, carrying a basket.
"Morning chores," he explains, sitting.
Kai places a plate in front of him as well.
Ruffling his hair affectionately.
Taking the last plate to his place, he sits down.
Over breakfast, Kai and Aoi outline their plan.
The three of us are to travel back to Gackt's castle.
Once there, Kai will seek an audience.
While Aoi helps me sneak back into the chamber with Saga's mirror.
He'll act as lookout and guard while I try out the spell from the book.
Hopefully we'll be successful and meet Kai outside the audience chamber.
"And then, we try to figure out where Saga last was."
"Hopefully, bringing him along will make it easier to find him."
"That's really a good plan," I tell them, sliding my almost empty plate away from me. "When can we go?"
They both laugh.
"You're not anxious, are you?"
"Well, the sooner we start, the sooner we can free Saga. Besides, I don't want to be a bother."
"You're not bothering us," Kai says, flashing me another smile. "It's nice having someone else around. Someone that'll smile back at me."
Aoi rolls his eyes at his brother.
I'm beginning to think that's his usual response to anything.
So we agree to set their plan into motion.
Getting to the castle before lunch.
That way most of the servants should be busy.
Along with the guards.
Aoi's sure he can handle them, but I'd rather not find out.
So they set me up with new clothes.
At least, they're new to me.
Aoi and I are supposed to pass as retainers for Kai.
The outifit is nicer than anything I've ever had.
No holes.
And very soft material.
When Kai joins us, I'm amazed.
He really looks like someone with money.
His clothes are that fancy.
And then I realize what I'm wearing must belong to him.
We make our way to the castle.
And I'm not as worried as I thought I'd be.
I doubt anyone will recognize me like this.
And then there's the fact that I'm not alone.
That helps a lot.
"Wait here. I'll see if the king's taking visitors today."
Their plan will only work if he is.
Otherwise, we might not be able to get into his chambers.
Mainly because we won't know where the man is.
He could walk in at any time.
I look around, noticing a lot of people waiting around.
I look at Aoi.
He looks a bit puzzled, too.
Grabbing the arm of a passing page, he asks, "What's going on?"
"One of the neighboring princes is visiting. He and the king are talking about the future of the two kingdoms. It's a very important visit."
After the boy walks away Kai rejoins us.
"Looks like a change of plans. With this visiting prince, we can all go take care of that 'problem' together."
"Got a back way?" Aoi asks, glancing around.
I nod, making my way towards the servants' areas.
Aoi keeps looking back, watching behind us.
"What?" Kai asks him as we stop at the top of the stairs.
"I dunno," Aoi answers. "I just thought I saw someone I know."
Kai looks at him on surprise.
After a moment they both shake it off, turning back to me.
"Ok, where's this mirror?"
"This way."
We make our way to the room without any trouble.
Slowly opening the door, Aoi peeks inside.
"All clear," he says, stepping thru the door.
I walk over to the mirror as the others start taking everything we need out of the pack we brought.
I pull back the curtain "Saga?"
He practically jumps into view.
"Shou! You're back already?"
And I can't help laughing at him.
"I told you I wouldn't be long. And I found us some help. This is Kai and Aoi," I tell him as they walk up.
After setting everything up, Aoi walks back to the door.
Opening it a crack, so he can keep an eye on the hallway.
Kai hands me the book, already open to the correct page.
I hesitate a moment.
"It's gonna be all right, Shou," Saga tells me. "And it will work. Just read it."
I nod at him, finally taking the book.
I stand where Kai tells me to.
Glancing at both Saga and Kai before starting.
I block everything else out.
Concentrating on the words I need to say.
Putting all my hope in this working.
Finishing the last word, I close my eyes.
Saying another silent prayer.
I open my eyes slowly.
Looking at the mirror.
Saga's not there.
I quickly make my way to where the hand mirror's resting.
Not trusting myself to handle it, I kneel in front of it.
And there's Saga, smiling at me.
"It worked!" he laughs.
And his voice sounds exactly the same.
Even tho his image is a bit smaller.
OK, so it's a lot smaller.
But at least he doesn't look cramped into the hand mirror.
"Good, so now we leave, right?" Aoi says from the doorway.
"Yes, and quickly. Before someone decides to check around."

A/N: Like I said in my
random post....there aren't any real dwarfs/dwarves in this. I was just making a (dumb) joke.
Snow White had 7 dwarfs...
Shou White should have 7 something-or-others.
Anyway...
I'm getting closer to where I need this to be. Next chapter will tell you a little more of "my plan".
