A Fractured Fairytale

Shou’s POV

We make our way down the stairs even more carefully than we'd made our way up them.
Finally we reach the main hallway.
Aoi looks around the group milling about.
He grabs Kai's arm, nodding at a small group standing off to one side.
Kai sucks in a breath, "Is that...?"
Aoi nods "I think so."
"Should we..?"
"They were always nice to us. It'd be the polite thing to do."
Not knowing what's going on, I stick close to the brothers.
They stop next to three men.
Two sitting, one standing with his back to us.
They’re all dressed casually.
But none of them looks very comfortable.
What I’d guess to be the youngest looks like he wishes he were anywhere but here.
He keeps looking at the man standing.
As if the other can give him support.
The other man sitting looks ready to start throwing things.
His eyes keep resting on the doors to the king’s audience chamber.
I’m guessing that’d be his target if he did throw something.
Finally the man standing turns around.
His eyes go wide in surprise.
"Hey Nao. How're things?"
"Holy Shit. It's really you, isn't it?" He says, reaching his hand towards Aoi.
"In the flesh. So to speak. So that's who this important visiting prince is. Reita."
"Yeah," Nao looks around, noticing that we're getting some attention.
"Let's find someplace quiet where we can talk."

Somehow, we end up in the gardens.
"First off, introductions" Nao suggests.
He looks at me, "I'm Nao. Prince Reita's personal guard and friend."
"I'm Shou," I say, shaking his hand. "Until recently I worked here."
He doesn't even look surprised by my statement.
"This is Hiroto," he says placing a hand on the young man's shoulder.
"And that's Ruki. Hiroto's fairy god person."
I feel bad when Aoi actually starts laughing.
Ruki just glares at him.
“I don’t see what’s so funny” Ruki huffs.
"Don't mind him," Nao says to Ruki. "He's always been a bit odd."
"Me?" Aoi says, feigning innocence. "I'm quite normal. It's you that's odd. Making someone else's safety your mission in life."
"You know why," Nao says.
Turning back to me he adds, "Reita's always looked out for me. In fact, he’s saved my life more than once. And he'll make a fine king. So it's not like I'm wasting my life or anything."
I nod, thinking that anyone who can earn this man's loyalty certainly will make a good ruler.
At least he'll be better than a vain peacock who keeps someone prisoner in a magic mirror.
"Anyway, the odd one's Aoi. And that's his nice normal brother, Kai. I've known them for a long time. I was what? Nine or ten the first time we met?"
"Around that," Kai smiles.
Nao gives him an answering one.
All he's missing is the dimple and they'd be like a matched set.
Except that Nao hasn't taken his hand from Hiroto's shoulder.
Which means the two are together.
As in a couple.
“Wait a minute. Are you..?” Aoi starts, motioning between the two men.
Hiroto looks back at Nao.
“Kinda” the other man blushes.
“That’s great!” Kai beams. “For how long?”
“Not that long. And yet, I feel like we’ve known each other forever.”
Aoi gives his customary eye-roll.
This time he’s joined by Ruki.
I try to bite back the ‘aww’ that’s threatening to escape.
But Kai doesn’t even try to hide his reaction.
He throws his arms around both of them, practically squealing with delight.

"Have you two decided to come out of hiding then? Is that why you're here?" Nao asks.
Kai shakes his head as Aoi speaks.
"No. We're here to help Shou. He needed to..a..retrieve something important that he left by mistake."
"It's luck that finds us here while you are," Kai adds. "Otherwise I might have had to introduce myself to this new king."
Ruki snorts. "Very lucky for you then. From what I've heard, this king isn't the nicest person."
Nao doesn't look too happy.
"He wouldn't let Nao in with the prince," Hiroto speaks up for the first time.
"Reita'll be fine. He can take care of himself. You made sure of that. Besides, this king'd be a fool to start something."
"You're right, Aoi. But I'd still feel better if I was in there with him."
“Even you can’t control everything. Just relax, Nao. Everything’ll work out fine.”
I’m surprised by how sure Aoi sounds.
Like he really knows.

Later another man finds his way into the garden.
My guess is confirmed when Nao asks, "How'd it go?"
This is Prince Reita.
I can see why Nao supports him.
He’s confident and calm.
Even tho he looks a little tired.
Sitting next to Ruki, Reita runs a hand thru his hair.
"The man's impossible. Fortunately, I can be very stubborn. Everything will stay pretty much as it is once I take the throne. I'm just hoping that's still many years from now."
Then he notices us.
"Holy Mother of..." he trails off, standing.
"Is that really who I think it is?" he asks, looking at Nao.
"Why are you asking him?" Aoi smirks.
"Because I've been known to see strange things. But this has got to be the strangest."
He walks over, first hugging Kai, then moving to Aoi.
"Where have you two been hiding?"
"The forest between your kingdom and this one," Aoi smiles.
I'm in complete shock.
I didn't think he could smile.
The man should probably do it more often.
It looks good on him.
"Are we done here?" Ruki asks, sounding slightly bored.
"Yeah. We can leave. What about you guys? Do you need to do anything else?"
"Let's go back to our place" Kai suggests.
And I find that leaving the castle this time is even easier than coming back had been with Aoi & Kai.
Not only do I have the hand mirror with Saga in it safely tucked into my bag, but I'm also traveling with six other people.

A/N: OK..So that clears up who the visiting prince was (Reita). As well as who Aoi saw and recognized (Nao). But..we still have Shou's Dream and the question of why Kai has fancy clothes.
All will be revealed, my friends.

Shou’s POV
