archive Hiroto’s POV
~~
Miyavi’s pacing.
And he keeps muttering, too.
“What does he think he’s doing?”
He turns, looking at me.
“You’re supposed to end up with the Prince. Not him. This is ridiculous.”
And he was back to pacing again.
I go back to watching.
That is, watching Ruki dancing with Prince Reita.
They really do look good together.
I turn when I feel someone at my shoulder.
It’s the guard, Nao.
“How well do you know him?” he asks, also watching to two dancing.
”I only just met him.”
He looks down at me.
”Really? How?”
“Um. This is going to sound stupid. But those two just showed up. Claiming that Ruki was my fairy god-person and Miyavi’s supposed to be some guild something-or-other.”
“Not really weird,” Nao says, nodding to himself.
“Huh? You buy that whole ‘fairy god-person’ bit?”
“Sure. There’s plenty of magic in the world. Why? Don’t you?”
“This is the first time I’ve seen anything to make me think that there might be.”
Nao tilts his head at me.
”That’s sad. Not believing in magic,” he said, shaking his head at me.
I just shrug.
When the music ends, both men return to where we’re standing.
Prince Reita lifts Ruki’s hand to his lips.
Leaving a kiss on the back of it before releasing the other man.
He gives Nao a nod, and both men walk away.
Miyavi walks up behind Ruki.
Giving him a whack to the back of his head.
“Just how does that get Hiroto the Prince? Or were you talking only about your charge?”
Ruki rubs the spot on the back of his head and smiles at me sheepishly.
“Sorry ‘bout that. I kinda forgot. What I was supposed to be doing.”
I shake my head, “Don’t worry about it. I’m not.”
Miyavi gives me a shocked look.
“You’re not mad that he’s stepping all over your chances with the Prince?”
“I really don’t think I had much of a chance to begin with. I mean, look at me. What have I got to offer?”
I turn at the tap on my shoulder.
Surprised to see Nao back.
“I didn’t mean to eavesdrop. But I think you have a lot going for you.”
I blush, looking at the floor.
It’s not like he actually knows me or anything.
But it’s still nice of him to say it.
“Anyway,” Nao continues,” Prince Reita’s wondering if you’d like to join him.
I look where he’s pointing.
The prince is now sitting at a small table.
It looks very intimate.
Warm and cozy.
“Me? Or Ruki?” I ask, hoping it’s Ruki the prince wants.
“Ruki. But you can join me.”
Nao points at a table set just out of hearing of the prince’s.
I nod, heading over.
“Wait a minute,” Miyavi protests.
“Come on, Ruki. You don’t want to keep the Prince waiting,” I toss over my shoulder.
Sitting with Nao, I can’t help but feel comfortable.
He’s got such an easy smile.
And even tho he’s keeping an eye on things, I still feel like he’s really paying attention to me.
**Miyavi’s POV**
I watch as they walk away.
Wondering what the heck is going on.
Ruki knows I’m making note of any unusual behavior.
And technically, that’s all he is.
Completely unorthodox about everything.
A walking contradiction.
He’s sitting with the prince he’s supposed to be fixing his charge up with.
This sin’t going to end well.
Not for any of us.
I make my way over to Hiroto and the guard, Nao.
They stop talking as I sit down.
“I’ve got a few questions, if you don’t mind,” Nao asks, leaning his elbows on the table.
“Fire away.”
“What exactly is Ruki’s job as Hiroto’s god-person?”
“He’s supposed to make sure his charge, you,” I point at the other man, “get a happy ending.”
“Say he get’s Hiroto a prince. What then?”
“He goes back to watching and waiting.”
“Wait a minute. He’s been watching me? For how long?”
“All your life, basically.”
“Why didn’t he do something about my parents? Or living about living with the idiot twins?”
“Because, that’s not just you. he can’t interfere with other people like that.”
”What about Reita? Isn’t he interfering in his life by trying to fix the two of them up?” Nao asks, leaning back.
“It’s not like we can make someone fall in love. We just give them the opportunity. Especially if it’s someone they may not of gotten the chance to meet without our help.”
”So now it’s ‘help’?” Hiroto says with a huff.
“What if I tell you I don’t want to marry a prince?”
I look back and for the between the two.
Wondering if this is who Hiroto’s suppose to meet.
“That is your choice, of course. No one can make you do anything. Besides, we’re supposed to make YOU happy. And forcing you to do something you don’t want to do almost guarantees that you won’t be.”
I take a moment to look at the other table.
Ruki has Reita laughing about something.
And I have to admit, they do look good together.
But Ruki knows.
It’s just not done.
“I’m sorry, “ I tell the two I’m sitting with.
“Even if you don’t want this prince, Ruki can’t have him.”
”Why not?”
“Because he’s a fairy god-person. Specifically yours. It’s his job. And once he’s given a charge, that’s what you do. Look out for them.”
”For how long?”
“Forever. Until one of you dies.”
**Hiroto’s POV**
Listening to Miyavi, I wonder why anyone would want the job.
It sounds to me like slavery.
Or worse.
“Where do you guys watch from?”
”Can’t tell you. That’s a very well guarded secret. No one outside the guild can know the location.”
Nao nods, “That makes sense. But what about this: it’s easier to watch over someone if you’re closer to them. Ruki’d have a better chance of ensuring Hiroto’s happily-ever-after if he lived near or with him.”
I try not to laugh.
Imagining Ruki with the ‘terror twins’.
Actually, I’d like to see that.
I’m sure he could handle them quite nicely.
Especially with that wand of his.
“I’d have to run that idea past my superiors,” Miyavi was saying.
“Why don’t you go do that now? I can take care of these two. No harm will come to them.”
I smiled, believing him.
“What’s the plan? I know you’ve got one,” I ask as soon as the taller man’s left.
“Simple, Reita obviously likes Ruki. And I think it’s safe to say that the feelings mutual. You move to the palace so that he can keep an eye on you, or whatever he’s supposed to do. Then he can get a happily-ever-after, too. What do you think?”
”Brilliant,” I tell him, thinking that’d keep me closer to him, too.
